Separated flows passed complex geometries are modeled by discrete vortex techniques. The flows are assumed to be rotational and inviscid, and a new techlnique is described to determine the stream functions for linear shear profiles. The geometries considered are the snow cornice and the backward-facing step, whose edges allow for the separation of the flow and reattachment downstream of the recirculation regions. A point vortex has been added to the flows in order to constrain the separation points to be located at the edges, while the conformal mappings have been modified in order to smooth the sharp edges and to let the separation points free to oscillate around the points of maximum curvature. Unsteadiness is imposed to the flow by perturbing the vortex location, either by displacing the vortex from the equilibrium, or by imposing a random perturbation with zero mean to the vortex in equilibrium. The trajectories of passive scalars continuously released upwind of the separation point and trapped by the recirculating bubble are numerically integrated, and concentration time series are calculated at fixed locations downwind of the reattachment points. This model proves to be capable of reproducing the trapping and intermittent release of scalars, in agreement with the simulation of the flow passed a snow cornice performed by a discrete multi-vortex model, as well as with direct numerical simulations of the flow passed a backward-facing step. The results of simulation indicate that for flows undergoing separation and reattachment the unsteadiness of the recirculating bubble is the main mechanism responsible for the intense large-scale concentration fluctuations downstream.

The electrode kinetic parameters at the Pd/0.5 M LiOH electrolyte interface have been qualitatively studied using the phase-shift method. The phase shift $(\phi)$ depends on both the cathode potential (E>0) and frequency (f), and $\theta$ is inversely proportional to the fractional surface coverage $\theta$. At an intermediate frequency (10 Hz), the phase-shift profile $(\phi\;vs.\;E)$ can be related to the fractional surface coverage $(\theta\;vs.\;E)$. The phase-shift method can be used to estimate or plot the Frumkin adsorption isotherm. The rate (r) of change of the free energy of adsorption with $({\theta})$ is 22.3 kJ/mol. The equilibrium constant (K) for adsorption and the standard free energy $({\Delta}G_{\theta})$ of the adsorbed hydrogen atom $(H_{ads})$ are $3.7\times10^{-3}{\Delta}G_{\theta}>-8.4kJ/mol$, respectively. For 1$0.38>\theta>0$, the energy liberation or the exothermic reaction for hydrogen adsorption at the Pd cathode can be occurred. The electrode kinetic parameters $(r,\;K,\;{\Delta}G_{\theta}$ depend on the fractional surface coverage $({\theta})$ or the phase shift $(\phi)$.

Improved numerical method to obtain the exact stiffness matrices is newly proposed to perform the spatially coupled elastic and stability analyses of non-symmetric and open/closed thin-walled beam on elastic foundation. This method overcomes drawbacks of the previous method to evaluate the exact stiffness matrix for the spatially coupled stability analysis of thin-walled beam-column This numerical technique is accomplished via a generalized eigenproblem associated with 14 displacement parameters by transforming equilibrium equations to a set of first order simultaneous ordinary differential equations. Next polynomial expressions as trial solutions are assumed for displacement parameters corresponding to zero eigenvalues and the eigenmodes containing undetermined parameters equal to the number of zero eigenvalues are determined by invoking the identity condition. And then the exact displacement functions are constructed by combining eigensolutions and polynomial solutions corresponding to non-zero and zero eigenvalues, respectively. Consequently an exact stiffness matrix is evaluated by applying the member force-deformation relationships to these displacement functions. In order to illustrate the accuracy and the practical usefulness of this study, the numerical solutions are compared with results obtained from the thin-walled beam and shell elements.
Ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) is one of the most important medicinal plants in East Asia. Microsatellite or simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers are used in obtaining genetic analysis and authentication in many plants. The present study examined five microsatellites in conjunction with P. ginseng in Korea. The total observed allelic number was 17 (mean = 3.4), and gene diversities varied from 0.078 to 0.543 with an average of 0.314. Through a combined analysis of five loci in 100 ginseng samples, 44 different combined genotypes were observed. Expected and observed heterozygosites ranged from 0.077 to 0.541 (mean = 0.313) and 0.040 to 0.130 (0.083), respectively. All examined loci exhibited deficiency of heterozygosity and deviation from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Such results may be explained by the non-random mating and inbreeding that has occurred for several hundred years. These microsatellite markers could be used for the study of molecular genetics and the establishment of DNA marker database, as well as authentication of ginseng species and chromosomal mapping of QTL loci in P. ginseng.
The $CO_2$-richrich water pumps or springs out at two sites (Sinchon and Kohran) consisting of Cretaceous sedimentary rocks in Kyungpook area. The water has been long known as its soda pop-liketaste and therapeutic effect against calcium deficit, stomach and skin troubles, etc. The water arecharacterized by a high $CO_2$ concentration $(P_{CO2}=0.29~l.01 atm)$ and electrical conductance (1,093~2,810$\mu$S/cm). The $CO_2$-rich water belongs to Ca(Na)-$HCO_3$ type in chemical classification. The contents of Ca, Mg, Na, HCO$_3$ and Fe of $CO_2$-rich water show much higher values than those of general groundwater Environmental isotopic data $(^2H/^1H, ^{18}O/^{16}O and ^3H/^1H)$ indicate that the water is ofmeteoric origin recharged after 1950s. The $CO_2$ in the springs seems to be originated from deep-seatedsource related to acidic porphyry and granite nearby sedimentary rocks. Carbonate minerals and albiteare likely to be the major source minerals of the dissoved inorganic constituents in the $CO_2$-rich water. The equilibrium state between major minerals and $CO_2$-rich water was calculated by a thermodynamicprogram.
An integrated model is presented to describe underground flow and mass transport, using a multicomponent multiphase approach. The comprehensive governing equation is derived considering mass and force balances of chemical species over four phases(water, oil, air, and soil) in a schematic elementary volume. Compact and systemati notations of relevant variables and equations are introduced to facilitate the inclusion of complex migration and transformation processes, and variable spatial dimensions. The resulting nonlinear system is solved by a multidimensional finite element code. The developed code with dynamic array allocation, is sufficiently flexible to work across a wide spectrum of computers, including an IBM ES 9000/900 vector facility, SP2 cluster machine, Unix workstations and PCs, for one-, two and three-dimensional problems. To reduce the computation time and storage requirements, the system equations are decoupled and solved using a banded global matrix solver, with the vector and parallel processing on the IBM 9000. To avoide the numerical oscillations of the nonlinear problems in the case of convective dominant transport, the techniques of upstream weighting, mass lumping, and elementary-wise parameter evaluation are applied. The instability and convergence criteria of the nonlinear problems are studied for the one-dimensional analogue of FEM and FDM. Modeling capacity is presented in the simulation of three dimensional composite multiphase TCE migration. Comprehesive simulation feature of the code is presented in a companion paper of this issue for the specific groundwater or flow and contamination problems.

The present Study dealt with the earthquake-resistant design of cantilever retaining walls supporting cohesionless soils. With design examples of three different types of cantilever retaining walls, the factors of safety against sliding were computed at various values of horizontal acceleration coefficient and compared with each other. The horizontal inertia effect due to the weights of concrete wall itself and a portion of backfill was taken into account in the analyses, and also Mononobe-Okabe pseudo-static solution method was modified to deal with various states different from limiting equilibrium state. From the analyses of safety against sliding, it was found that a cantilever retaining wall with sloped base was the most efficient type in earthquake resistant design. It was also found that by sloping the base, the width of the base slab could be reduced, resulting in the least volume of concrete, excavation and backfill as compared to the other types of walls. In the case of a cantilever retaining wall with sloped feel, the efficiency similar to that of a wall with sloped base could be expected under static loading as well as at relatively low level of earthquake loading. However, this efficiency became vanished with the increase of horizontal acceleration coefficient, since the rate of reduction in developed earth pressures on the heel became smaller. In addition, the design charts with different soil friction angles as well as with different earthquake resistant design criteria of safety factor against sliding were presented for the design of cantilever retaining walls sith sloped base.

A vane shear test (VST) is a simple testing method for determining an undrained shear strength of cohesive soils by minimizing soil disturbance. In this study, the VST was used to determine a shear strength of sand. Dry Nakdong River sand was prepared for loose and dense conditions in a cell and then pressurized with 25, 50, 75 or 100 kPa from the surface of sand. A vane (5 cm in diameter and 10 cm in height) was rotated and a torque was measured within sand. When a torque moment by vane and friction resistance moment by sand is assumed to be equalized, a friction angle can be obtained. When a vane rotates within clay, a uniform undrained shear strength is assumed to be acting on cylindrical failure surface. On the other hand, when it is applied for sand, the failure shape can be assumed to be an octagonal or square column. The relationship between measured torque and resistant force along assumed failure shapes due to friction of sand was derived and the internal friction angle of sand was determined for loose and dense conditions. For the same soil condition, a series of direct shear test was carried out and compared with VST result. The friction angle from VST was between 24-42 degrees for loose sand and 33-53 degrees for dense sand. This is similar to those of direct shear tests.
Pyroprocessing has been developed for the purpose of resolving the current spent nuclear fuel management issue and enhancing the recycle of valuable resources. Pyroprocessing has been developed with the dry technologies which are performed under high temperature conditions excluding any aqueous processes. Pyro-processes which are based on the electrochemical principles require pretreatment processes and a voloxidation process is considered as a pretreatment step for an electrolytic reduction process. Various kinds of gas conditions are applicable to the voloxidation process and the understanding of Cs behavior during the process is of importance for the analyses of waste characteristics and heat load on the overall pyroprocessing. In this study, the changes of chemical compounds with the gas conditions were calculated by analyzing gas-solid reaction behavior based on the chemical equilibria on a Cs-Te-O system. $Cs_2TeO_3$ and $Cs_2TeO_4$ were selected after a Tpp diagram analysis and it was confirmed that they are relatively stable under oxidizing atmospheres while it was shown that Cs and Te would be removed by volatilization under reducing atmosphere at a high temperature. This work provided basic data for predicting Cs behavior during the voloxidation process at which compounds are chemically distributed as the first stage in the pyroprocessing and it is expected that the results would be used for setting up material balances and related purposes.

The solubilities of ethyl bromide in aniline and o-chloroaniline have been measured at 5, 15$^{\circ}$ and 25$^{\circ}$C in the presence and the absence of gallium bromide. When gallium bromide does not exist in the system, the solubility of ethyl bromide in o-chloroaniline is greater than in aniline, indicating a stronger interaction of ethyl bromide with o-chloroaniline than that with aniline. It could be thought that ethyl bromide forms unstable complex with gallium bromide in the presence of gallium bromide in the system. This complex has been assumed in various ways and evaluated, that instability constant (K value) is relatively constancy under the assumption of 1 : 1 complex, $C_2H_5Br{\cdot}GaBr_3$. Therefore, the complex forms the following equilibrium in the solution: $C_2H_5Br{\cdot}GaBr_3\;{\rightleftharpoons}\;C_2H_5Br +1/2Ga_2Br_6$ The instability of the complex of ethyl bromide with gallium bromide is compared with similar complexes of gallium bromide with methyl bromide. The changes of enthalpy, free energy and entropy fcor the dissociation of the complex are also calculated.
