  • The $CO_2$-richrich water pumps or springs out at two sites (Sinchon and Kohran) consisting of Cretaceous sedimentary rocks in Kyungpook area. The water has been long known as its soda pop-liketaste and therapeutic effect against calcium deficit, stomach and skin troubles, etc. The water arecharacterized by a high $CO_2$ concentration $(P_{CO2}=0.29~l.01 atm)$ and electrical conductance (1,093~2,810$\mu$S/cm). The $CO_2$-rich water belongs to Ca(Na)-$HCO_3$ type in chemical classification. The contents of Ca, Mg, Na, HCO$_3$ and Fe of $CO_2$-rich water show much higher values than those of general groundwater Environmental isotopic data $(^2H/^1H, ^{18}O/^{16}O and ^3H/^1H)$ indicate that the water is ofmeteoric origin recharged after 1950s. The $CO_2$ in the springs seems to be originated from deep-seatedsource related to acidic porphyry and granite nearby sedimentary rocks. Carbonate minerals and albiteare likely to be the major source minerals of the dissoved inorganic constituents in the $CO_2$-rich water. The equilibrium state between major minerals and $CO_2$-rich water was calculated by a thermodynamicprogram.

  • An integrated model is presented to describe underground flow and mass transport, using a multicomponent multiphase approach. The comprehensive governing equation is derived considering mass and force balances of chemical species over four phases(water, oil, air, and soil) in a schematic elementary volume. Compact and systemati notations of relevant variables and equations are introduced to facilitate the inclusion of complex migration and transformation processes, and variable spatial dimensions. The resulting nonlinear system is solved by a multidimensional finite element code. The developed code with dynamic array allocation, is sufficiently flexible to work across a wide spectrum of computers, including an IBM ES 9000/900 vector facility, SP2 cluster machine, Unix workstations and PCs, for one-, two and three-dimensional problems. To reduce the computation time and storage requirements, the system equations are decoupled and solved using a banded global matrix solver, with the vector and parallel processing on the IBM 9000. To avoide the numerical oscillations of the nonlinear problems in the case of convective dominant transport, the techniques of upstream weighting, mass lumping, and elementary-wise parameter evaluation are applied. The instability and convergence criteria of the nonlinear problems are studied for the one-dimensional analogue of FEM and FDM. Modeling capacity is presented in the simulation of three dimensional composite multiphase TCE migration. Comprehesive simulation feature of the code is presented in a companion paper of this issue for the specific groundwater or flow and contamination problems.

  • Installation of deck has been on the rise in Korea recently, but there is little of research on the safety of deck. One of the major factors affecting maneuverability of a pedestrian is frictional force between an outsole of shoe and a surface of the deck. The frictional force is influenced by many factors such as raw material variance of deck, surface convex shape of deck, outsole patterns of shoes, and moist condition of contact surface between deck and shoes. This study focused on evaluating the effect of these factors on the frictional force. Two kinds of deck, which were made of natural wood and wood plastic composite, were used in this study. The surface convex patterns of deck were classified to single nonslip (longitudinal groove processing) and double nonslip (longitudinal and transverse groove processing). Two kinds of shoe outsole patterns, W-shape and rectangle-shape, were used in the tests. Also, the friction tests were carried out at dried surface conditions and water-adsorbed surface condition.

  • The previous strut-and-tie models (STMs) to evaluate the shear strength of squat shear walls with aspect ratio less than 2.0 do not consider the axial load transfer of concrete strut and individual shear transfer contribution of horizontal and vertical shear reinforcing bars in the web. To overcome the limitation of the existing models, a simple STM was established based on the crack band theory of concrete fracture mechanics. The equivalent effective width of concrete strut having a stress relief strip was determined from the neutral axis depth and effective factor of concrete strength. The shear transfer mechanism of shear reinforcement at the extended crack band zone was calculated from an internally statically indeterminate truss system. The shear transfer capacity of concrete strut and shear reinforcement was then driven using the energy equilibrium in the stress relief strip and crack band zone. The shear strength predictions of squat shear walls evaluated from the current models are in better agreement with 150 test results than those determined from STMs proposed by Siao and Hwang et al. Furthermore, the proposed STM gives consistent agreement with the observed trend of the shear strength of shear walls against different parameters.

  • A vane shear test (VST) is a simple testing method for determining an undrained shear strength of cohesive soils by minimizing soil disturbance. In this study, the VST was used to determine a shear strength of sand. Dry Nakdong River sand was prepared for loose and dense conditions in a cell and then pressurized with 25, 50, 75 or 100 kPa from the surface of sand. A vane (5 cm in diameter and 10 cm in height) was rotated and a torque was measured within sand. When a torque moment by vane and friction resistance moment by sand is assumed to be equalized, a friction angle can be obtained. When a vane rotates within clay, a uniform undrained shear strength is assumed to be acting on cylindrical failure surface. On the other hand, when it is applied for sand, the failure shape can be assumed to be an octagonal or square column. The relationship between measured torque and resistant force along assumed failure shapes due to friction of sand was derived and the internal friction angle of sand was determined for loose and dense conditions. For the same soil condition, a series of direct shear test was carried out and compared with VST result. The friction angle from VST was between 24-42 degrees for loose sand and 33-53 degrees for dense sand. This is similar to those of direct shear tests.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the removal efficiency of phosphorus from synthetic waste water by reduction and oxidation reaction of Cu-Zn metal alloy. Cu-Zn metal alloy applied in this study is composed of 40% of Zn and 60% of Cu, which is so called Muntz metal. And the fibrous type of metal alloy has approximately $200{\mu}m$ of thickness. Metal is oxidized in an aqueous solution to generate electron and metal ion. The mechanism of phosphate treatment is co-precipitation of metal ion and phosphorous ion at various pH and temperature. The treatment efficiency showed the maximum at a one cycle treatment. This result means that the surface area of reaction material is sufficient enough to get reaction equilibrium. Experiment is conducted at various pH from 5 to 9, and showed the maximum efficiency at pH 8. Phosphorous is dominated as a type of $H_2PO_4{^-}$ and $HPO_4{^{2-}}$ at this pH condition. We could not consider the temperature effect independently, because phosphorous removal efficiency showed such a complex mechanism. We could get high efficiency at lower temperature in this research.

  • This work investigated the stability of a Sn-modified Pt electrode, which was used for reduction of nitrate, fabricated by an adsorption or electro-deposition of Sn on Pt. In order to find the causes for instability of the electrode, the effects of the solutions in which the electrode was used and the potential applied to the electrode on the electrochemical and metallurgical behaviors of Sn on Pt were studied. The Sn of freshly- prepared modified-Sn Pt electrode existed as Sn hydroxide form, which brought about an easy loss of the electro-activity of the electrode even staying in water, especially in acid solution. When the Sn-modified Pt electrode was used for the reduction of nitrate, the electro-activity of the electrode was affected depending on the potential applied to the electrode. When a more negative potential than the redox equilibrium potential between $Sn(OH)_2$ and Sn was applied to the electrode, the Sn hydroxide was converted to Sn that could diffused into Pt, which leaded to the loss of electro-activity of the electrode as well. The solid diffusion of Sn increased linearly with the applied potential. The Sn-electrodeposited Pt electrode which had more Sn on the electrode was more favorable to maintaining the integrity of the electrode during the reduction of nitrate than the Sn-adsorbed Pt electrode prepared in the under-potential deposition way.

  • The migration mechanism of trace elements, Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn and Sn from brass food-contact utensiles was investigated. The migration of metals from brass was affected by the migration temperature (30, 60, 80 and $95^{\circ}C$), the simulant pH (2.5, 4.3, 6.0 and 7.0) and the migration time (30, 90, 180 and 360 min.). The amount of Pb migration was maximum at $95^{\circ}C$ with pH 2.5. This study indicated that the equilibrium of Pb migration was reached at 180 minutes. The mechanism of Pb migration was investigated with Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Electron Probe Micro Analyzer (EPMA). To correlate the relations between the migration and the content of Pb in brass samples, ten brass samples having known content of Pb (the quantities of Pb in brass ; 0, 0.02, 0.09, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 0.9, 1.4, 5.4 and 9.2% (w/w)) were tested in the following conditions, 4% acetic acid, $95^{\circ}C$ and 30 minutes. The result represented that content of Pb in brass samples must be below 0.2% (w/w) to satisfy the 1.0 ppm (as Pb) of Korea Food Code.

  • Objective of this research is to obtain fundamental data of carbonized wood wastes for soil condition, de-ordorization, absorption of water, carrier for microbial activity, and purifying agent for water quality of river. The carbonization technique and the properties of carbonized wood wastes(thinned trees) are analyzed. Proximate analysis shows the thinned wood contains 0.22-0.73% ash, 77-80% volatile matter, and 10-14% fixed carbon. The charcoal yield decreases and the shrinkage rate increases as the carbonization temperature and time increase. The charcoal yields of Larix leptolepis, Pinus rigida and Pinus densiflora are high, whereas those of Pinus koraiensis and Quercus variabilis are low. The shrinkage rate by carbonization has same trend as water removal of wood. The specific gravity after the carbonization decreases about 50% comparing to green wood. The charcoal has 0.89-4.08% ash, 6.31-13.79% volatile matter, and 73.9-83.5% fixed carbon. As the carbonization temperature and time increase, pH of charcoal increases. When the carbonization temperature is $400^{\circ}C$, pH is about 7.5. When the temperature is between 600 to $800^{\circ}C$, pH is about 10 with small difference. The water-retention capacity is not affected by the carbonization temperature and time. The water-retention capacity within 24hr is about 2.5 - 3times of sample weight, and the equivalent moisture content becomes 2-10% after 24 hr.

  • The viscous force of fluids and the capillary force acting on the pore network of the porous media are important factors determining the immiscible displacement during geological $CO_2$ sequestration, these were directly affected by geological formation conditions and injection conditions. This study aimed to observe the migration and distribution of injected fluid and pore water, and quantitatively investigate displacement efficiency on various injection temperatures. This study aimed to perform micromodel experiments by applying n-hexane used as a proxy fluid for supercritical $CO_2$. In this study, immiscible displacement process from beginning of n-hexane injection to equilibrium of the distribution of the n-hexane and pore water was observed. The images from experiment were used to observe the displacement pattern and estimate the areal displacment efficiency of the n-hexane. For investigate the affects of the injection temperatures on the migration in macroscopic, migration of n-hexane in single pore was analyzed. The measurement revealed that the displacement efficiency at equilibrium state decreases as the temperature increases. The result from experiments indicate that the temperatures can affect the displacement pattern by changing the viscous forces and the capillary forces. The experimental results could provide important fundamental information on reservoir conditions and fluid injection conditions during geological $CO_2$ sequestration.
