  • In this paper, a planar frequency reconfigurable antenna is proposed with variable capacitors. The proposed one is designed with a planar monopole, and varies resonant frequencies by variable capacitive loading of a varactor diode. The equivalent circuit and electromagnetic(EM) simulation are utilized for the analysis at the variable characteristic design of the antenna, and the same radiation performance. The implemented frequency variable monopole antenna has been verified by comparing prototypes with designed capacitors and ones with biased varactor diodes. The proposed antenna has presented the resonant frequency variations from 2.25 GHz to 2.42 GHz.

  • In this paper, an array antenna is designed far base station of a street micro-cell in urban areas. It has a rectangular radiation pattern. The current distribution of the array is decided by using a modified Woodward-Lawson sampling pattern synthesis method. To confirm the realization of the array antenna with rectangular pattern, 12 array antenna with a planar type monopole fed by stripline is fabricated and measured. In the results of the measured values, H-plane pattern of the antenna nearly yields a rectangular radiation pattern.

  • The design of a compact folded patch antenna with moderately broad bandwidth is presented in this paper. The proposed antenna has radiation characteristics that are similar to the conventional monopole antenna. However, since this antenna is designed in a planar form, it has smaller size than that of a conventional monopole antenna. We have investigated the resonance frequency and bandwidth characteristics of the proposed antenna by changing the antenna design parameters. The proposed planar form of a monopole antenna in this paper has 1.17 GHz bandwidth with a matching circuit at the center frequency of 6.05 GHz.

  • In this paper, the CPW-fed triple-band internal planar monopole antenna which simultaneously meets the three bands such as Cellular, PCS and Wibro is designed. The size of the radiation elements can be reduced to about $\lambda/4$ by designing the CPW-fed monopole antenna and then we can miniaturize the antenna size by meandering the radiation elements. In addition, we design the planar antenna for the slim-type mobile phone. We can obtain the desired antenna properties by controlling the length of each radiation elements. The measured return loss of the antenna is less than -7 dB at the desired bandwidth. And the measured radiation patterns are similar to that of the monopole antenna. The designed antenna has the gains -5.2 dBi. -2 dBi, -0.4 dBi at each resonant frequencies respectively.

  • In this paper, the detection of 1 g and 10 g averaged SAR on human head caused by PCS handheld phones is analyzed and discussed. Conventional monopole antenna and planar structured PIFA are used in the computational model to apply to the antennas mounted on handheld phone. These antennas are designed to operate in the near of frequency 1.8 GHz, human head model is sampled to have cell size 1.5 mm and sloped to front direction by 30$^{\circ}$. It is found that, when monopole antenna is applied, 1 g averaged SAR is 1.4 W/kg, 10 g averaged SAR is 0.7 W/kg, when PIFA is applied, for each case, SARs are 1.143 W/kg, 0.4866 W/kg. While the radiation pattern of the monopole antenna is symmetrical, that of planar structured antenna is asymmetrical and SAR caused by PIFA is less than SAR by the monopole antenna. The radiation efficiency of PIFA is 62.6%, which is higher than that of monopole, 53%.

  • In this paper, a double circular ring monopole antenna for wideband applications is designed and fabricated. The proposed antenna is based on a planar monopole design, and composed of double circular ring of radiating patches and ground plane to obtain the wideband characteristics. To get the optimized parameters, we used the simulator, Ansoft's High Frequency Structure Simulator(HFSS) and found the parameters that effect antenna characteristics. Using the obtained parameters, the proposed antenna is fabricated. The fabricated antenna is measured at the operating frequencies, and the return loss coefficient, gain, and radiation patterns are determined. The results of measurement, -10dB impedance bandwidth, measured return loss is 4,530 MHz(2,510-7,040 MHz) and antenna peak and average gains for the frequencies are obtained 0.71~3.38 dBi, -3.85~0.3 dBi, respectively. In case of radiation patterns, the proposed antenna displays nearly omnidirectional radiation characteristics in the E-plane, and monopole-like radiation pattern characteristics in the H-plane.

  • In this paper, the spiral planar monopole antenna mounted on a Cellular/WCDMA handset is designed. Frequency characteristics is optimized with various design parameters. The two spiral lines are adopted in order to implement Cellular frequency bandwidth and WCDMA frequency bandwidth. The bandwidth of the realized antenna is $0.805{\sim}0.892$ GHz(10 %) and $1.867{\sim}2.302$ GHz(21 %) for VSWR${\leq}2$ which contain the proposed frequency bandwidth. In human head, the simulated value on 1 g and 10 g averaged SAR caused by electromagnetic wave radiated in the designed antenna is compared with the measured value. As a result, the measured values of 1 g and 10 g averaged SAR were similar to the simulated values, which were lower than the SAR guidelines.

  • In this paper, a novel ultra-wideband planar monopole antenna for the UHF communications and Digital-TV reception is proposed. The proposed antenna fed by a coplanar waveguide(CPW) is based on a triangular patch that has a broadband characteristic. To further increase the bandwidth of the triangular patch antenna, the top side of the regular triangular patch is loaded with a notch cut and each oblique side with a step. In addition, a slope is given to the ground plane of the CPW structure. Experimental results show that the -10 dB return loss bandwidth of the proposed antenna is 2,320 MHz from 480~2,800 MHz(5.83:1 bandwidth), which covers all the frequency bands of the various wireless communication systems and Digital TV broadcasting in the UHF band. Within the entire operating frequency range, the measured antenna gain in y-z plane(E-plane) varies from 3.01 to 4.71 dBi.

  • In this study, a novel dual band planar monopole antenna for wireless local area network (WLAN)/ Worldwide Interoperability of Microwave Access (WiMAX) application was designed, fabricated, and measured. The proposed antenna consists of two hook shaped strips, an asymmetric ground plane, and a rectangular slit in the ground plane. Acceptable agreements between the measured and simulated results are achieved. Numerical and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed antenna satisfies the 10 dB impedance bandwidth requirement while covering the WLAN and WiMAX bands simultaneously. This paper also presents and discusses the 2D radiation patterns and 3D gains according to the results of the experiment that was conducted.

  • In this paper, we propose a open-ended rectangular microstirp patch antenna with fork-shaped feeding structure. This antenna extends the effective bandwidth by transforming single or multi resonant frequency and is designed planar monopole structure with microstrip line to satisfy the WLAN bands (2.4 - 2.484, 5.15 - 5.35, 5.25-5.825 GHz). The substrate is printed in 0.8 mm thickness on an FR-4 board. A commercial 3D simulation tool was used to analyze surface current and electromagnetic field distribution in order to analyze the operation mode and reconfiguration principle of antenna. According to the lengths of individual patches, simulated reflection loss was compared to obtain optimized values. When it was designed with the optimized values, it satisfied WLAN bands (2.380 - 2.710, 4.900 - 5.950 GHz), if the switch is off, and 2.4 WLAN band (2.380 - 2.710 GHz). From the fabricated and measured results, measured results of return loss, gain and radiation patterns characteristics displayed for operating bands.
