  • In this study, we theoretically study the acoustic scattering of an obliquely incident plane wave from a finite elastic cylindrical shell. A heuristic scattering method of Ye [Z. Ye, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 102, 877-884 (1997)] for a finite fluid cylinder is extended into a finite elastic cylindrical shell since no analytic solutions exist in the finite cylinder. The elastic cylindrical shell is modeled with the 3D elastic wave theory considering internal fluid. Using the derived analytic solution, we observe the effect of the internal fluid on the scattering field, the scattering field for the Rayleigh parameter, and the far-field scattering function for the elastic property of the cylindrical shell.

  • This paper describes how the directivity pattern of the scattered sound pressure is distributed when a plane acoustic wave is incident on a rigid or soft spherical shell underwater. A coupled Finite Element-Boundary Element method is developed as a numerical technique. The result of the coupled FE-BE method is agreed with theoretical solution for algorithmic confirmation.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the radiation patterns of a monopole antenna mounted on cylinder and EM penetration problems in the complex structures by using FDTD method associated with 3-D PML absorbing boundary condition. In order to validate the proposed FDTD code, the radiation patterns of monopole antenna mounted on cylinders were compared with the exact Carter's solutions. As a results, the predicted radiation pattern exhibited excellent agreement with exact solution. And the FDTD code is applied to analyze the EM penetration problems in complex structures, Blackhawk helicopter. As the plane wave is excited, a significant amount of energy penetrates the helicopter structure, and it is dependent on aperture/airframe interface.

  • The space harmonics generated by a plane-wave incident upon a multi-layered dielectric grating can undergo strong resonance scattering variations known as GMR(guided-mode resonance). To clarify these effects, we examine the field propagation and dispersion curve inside the grating region by using a rigorous equivalent transmission-line theory(RETT). The results show that, at the peak of a scattering resonance, the reflected mode is almost identical to a leaky wave that can be supported by the grating structure. Thus, we confirm and generalize previous research that has occurred GMR effect associated with the free-resonant character of leaky waves at multi-layered dielectric gratings. Quantitative simulation results illustrating the behavior of typical gratings are given, and the special case of normal incidence is discussed for TM mode.

  • This paper describes two different theories used to model the scattering of ultrasound by a volumetric flaw and a crack-like flaw. The elastodynamic Kirchhoff approximation (EKA) and the geometrical theory of diffraction (GTD) are applied respectively to a cylindrical cavity and a semi-infinite crack. These methods are known as high frequency approximations. The 2-D elastodynamic scattering problems of a plane wave incident on these model defects are considered and the scattered fields are expressed in terms of the reflection and diffraction coefficients. The ratio of the scattered far field amplitude to the incident wave amplitude is computed as a function of the angular location and compared with the boundary element solutions.

  • We calculate the optimum refractive index and thickness for a single layer antireflection coating as a function of active layer thickness of a laser diode using three different simplified numerical methods. The difference of the results using three methods comes from that of the effective refractive index of a laser used in three methods. We compare three simplified methods to an exact method to check the validity of the simplified methods. We conclude that the simplified method, choosing the effective index of a laser diode as a function of incidence angle of each plane wave composing of a guided mode agree well to an exact method for both TE and TM modes and the cases of strongly and weakly guiding.

  • This study investigates the characteristics of stem waves along a vertical wall generated by obliquely incident monochromatic waves through laboratory experiments conducted in a wave basin and numerical simulations using parabolic approximation equations. The investigation is focused on the nonlinear effect of incident waves on the propagation characteristics of stem waves. Numerical results are compared with laboratory measurements and good agreements are obtained. The main results of this study show that the normalized stem wave height along the wall decreases and the stem width increases as the angle of incident waves decreases or the nonlinearity of the incident waves increases.

  • The final goal of the seismic method is to verify the spatial characteristic of subsurface media. For this purpose, professional interpreters interprete the discontinuities of seismic events from seismic image. This paper introduces a method for automatic discontinuity extraction from 3D seismic image. The method consists of three steps. The first step is for estimating coherency of seismic events from seismic data. The second step is to express the potential region where discontinuities may exist in the form of binary image. The third step is to locate the discontinuities by thining the region found in the second step.

  • This study investigates the characteristics of stem waves along a vertical wall generated by obliquely incident random waves through laboratory experiments conducted in a wave basin and numerical simulations using REF/DIF S model developed by Kirby and $\ddot{O}zkan$(1994). The investigation is focused on the effect of random waves on the propagation characteristics of stem waves and the difference or similarity between monochromatic and random waves. The results of REF/DIF S model are compared with laboratory measurements and good agreements are obtained. The relative significant wave height along a wall is almost same with monochromatic condition, but the wave pattern along normal to the wall shows a significant difference.
