Satellite altimeters have continuously observed sea surface height (SSH) in the global ocean for the past 30 years, providing clear evidence of the rise in global mean sea level based on observational data. Accurate altimeter-observed SSH is essential to study the spatial and temporal variability of SSH in regional seas. In this study, we used measurements from the Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) and validate SSHs observed by satellite altimeters (Envisat, Jason-1, Jason-2, SARAL, Jason-3, and Sentinel-3A/B). Bias and root mean square error of SSH for each satellite ranged from 1.58 to 4.69 cm and 6.33 to 9.67 cm, respectively. As the matchup distance between satellite ground tracks and the IORS increased, the error of satellite SSHs significantly amplified. In order to validate the correction of the tide and atmospheric effect of the satellite data, the tide was estimated using harmonic analysis, and inverse barometer effect was calculated using atmospheric pressure data at the IORS. To achieve accurate tidal corrections for satellite SSH data in the seas around the Korean Peninsula, it was confirmed that improving the accuracy of tide data used in satellites is necessary.
The hypocenter distribution of microseismic events generated by hydraulic fracturing for shale gas development provides essential information for understanding characteristics of fracture network. In this study, we evaluate how inaccurate velocity models influence the inversion results of two widely used location programs, hypoellipse and hypoDD, which are developed based on an iterative linear inversion. We assume that 98 stations are densely located inside the circle with a radius of 4 km and 5 artificial hypocenter sets (S0 ~ S4) are located from the center of the network to the south with 1 km interval. Each hypocenter set contains 25 events placed on the plane. To quantify accuracies of the inversion results, we defined 6 parameters: difference between average hypocenters of assumed and inverted locations, $d_1$; ratio of assumed and inverted areas estimated by hypocenters, r; difference between dip of the reference plane and the best fitting plane for determined hypocenters, ${\theta}$; difference between strike of the reference plane and the best fitting plane for determined hypocenters, ${\phi}$; root-mean-square distance between hypocenters and the best fitting plane, $d_2$; root-mean-square error in horizontal direction on the best fitting plane, $d_3$. Synthetic travel times are calculated for the reference model having 1D layered structure and the inaccurate velocity model for the inversion is constructed by using normal distribution with standard deviations of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 km/s, respectively, with respect to the reference model. The parameters $d_1$, r, ${\theta}$, and $d_2$ show positive correlation with the level of velocity perturbations, but the others are not sensitive to the perturbations except S4, which is located at the outer boundary of the network. In cases of S0, S1, S2, and S3, hypoellipse and hypoDD provide similar results for $d_1$. However, for other parameters, hypoDD shows much better results and errors of locations can be reduced by about several meters regardless of the level of perturbations. In light of the purpose to understand the characteristics of hydraulic fracturing, $1{\sigma}$ error of velocity structure should be under 0.2 km/s in hypoellipse and 0.3 km/s in hypoDD.

Most operational uses of wind speed data require measurements at, or estimates generated for, the reference height of 10 m above mean sea level (AMSL). On the Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS), wind speed is measured by instruments installed on the lighthouse tower of the roof deck at 42.3 m AMSL. This preliminary study indicates how these data can best be converted into synthetic 10 m wind speed data for operational uses via the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency (KHOA) website. We tested three well-known conventional empirical neutral wind profile formulas (a power law (PL); a drag coefficient based logarithmic law (DCLL); and a roughness height based logarithmic law (RHLL)), and compared their results to those generated using a well-known, highly tested and validated logarithmic model (LMS) with a stability function (${\psi}_{\nu}$), to assess the potential use of each method for accurately synthesizing reference level wind speeds. From these experiments, we conclude that the reliable LMS technique and the RHLL technique are both useful for generating reference wind speed data from IORS observations, since these methods produced very similar results: comparisons between the RHLL and the LMS results showed relatively small bias values ($-0.001m\;s^{-1}$) and Root Mean Square Deviations (RMSD, $0.122m\;s^{-1}$). We also compared the synthetic wind speed data generated using each of the four neutral wind profile formulas under examination with Advanced SCATterometer (ASCAT) data. Comparisons revealed that the 'LMS without ${\psi}_{\nu}^{\prime}$ produced the best results, with only $0.191m\;s^{-1}$ of bias and $1.111m\;s^{-1}$ of RMSD. As well as comparing these four different approaches, we also explored potential refinements that could be applied within or through each approach. Firstly, we tested the effect of tidal variations in sea level height on wind speed calculations, through comparison of results generated with and without the adjustment of sea level heights for tidal effects. Tidal adjustment of the sea levels used in reference wind speed calculations resulted in remarkably small bias (<$0.0001m\;s^{-1}$) and RMSD (<$0.012m\;s^{-1}$) values when compared to calculations performed without adjustment, indicating that this tidal effect can be ignored for the purposes of IORS reference wind speed estimates. We also estimated surface roughness heights ($z_0$) based on RHLL and LMS calculations in order to explore the best parameterization of this factor, with results leading to our recommendation of a new $z_0$ parameterization derived from observed wind speed data. Lastly, we suggest the necessity of including a suitable, experimentally derived, surface drag coefficient and $z_0$ formulas within conventional wind profile formulas for situations characterized by strong wind (${\geq}33m\;s^{-1}$) conditions, since without this inclusion the wind adjustment approaches used in this study are only optimal for wind speeds ${\leq}25m\;s^{-1}$.
Individuals with high trait anxiety try to suppress their anger expression, thus there are limits in measuring their anger using subjective behavioral evaluation. In order to overcome this limitation, this study attempted to identify the difference in the autonomic nervous system responses induced by anger in individuals with high trait anxiety. Participants were divided into two groups, anxiety and control groups. Electrocardiogram (ECG), respiration (RESP), electrodermal activity (EDA), and skin temperature (SKT) were measured while participants were presented with an anger-inducing stimulus. Heart rate (HR), standard deviation of NN interval (SDNN), root mean square of successive difference (RMSSD), low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF), LF/HF ratio, respiration rate (RR), skin conductance level (SCL), and maximum skin temperature (maxSKT) were calculated before and after presenting the stimulus. Anxiety group reported greater anger by the anger-inducing stimulus compared to the control group. Anxiety group also showed significant increase in SDNN and LF, and decrease in HF, LF/HF ratio, and RR. These results suggest that the autonomic nervous system responses may be used as objective indicators of anger experiences in individuals with high trait anxiety.
The R-Z relationship is one of important error factors to determine the accuracy of radar rainfall estimation. In this study, we have explored the effect of the R-Z relationships derived from disdrometer data in estimating the radar rainfall. The heavy rain event that produced flooding in St-Remi, Quebec, Canada has been occurred. We have tried to investigate the severity of rain for this event using high temporal (2.5 min) and spatial resolution ($1^{\circ}$ by 250 m) radar data obtained from the McGill S-band radar. Radar data revealed that the heavy rain cells pass directly over St-Remi while the coarse raingauge network was not sufficient to detect this rain event. The maximum 30 min (1 h) accumulation reaches about 39 (42) mm in St-Remi. During the rain event, the two disdrometers (POSS; Precipitation Occurrence Sensor System) were available: One used for the reflectivity calibration by comparing disdrometer Z and radar Z and the other for deriving disdrometric R-Z relationships. The result shows the significant improvement with the disdrometric reflectivity-dependent R-Z relationships against the climatological R-Z relationship. The bias in radar rain estimation is reduced from +12% to -2% and the root-mean squared error from 16 to 10% for daily accumulation. Using the estimated radar rainfall rate with disdrometric R-Z relationships, the flood event was well captured with proper timing and amount.

The development of a technique that can monitor the cracks, which is one of the typical types of damage, is necessary to secure the structural safety of elastically restrained cantilever-type beams with a tip mass that is used widely in infrastructure. Impedance techniques have been actively researched to detect cracks, and the cracks were estimated mainly by experimentally investigating the relationship between the crack and impedance signal. This study examined the correlation between the change in the impedance signals due to the crack, and the natural frequency obtained analytically. After updating the analysis model for the intact beam, the impedance signal was measured while gradually inflicting cracks in the cantilever-type beam, and the damage index was obtained. The results were compared with the natural frequencies calculated from the updated analysis model to investigate the correlation. A close correlation was observed between the experimentally obtained impedance damage index, and the analytically calculated natural frequency. Using this correlation, the structural characteristics could be evaluated more accurately from the damage estimation results, and the behavior of the structure could be predicted effectively using the analysis model.

The hydrological characteristics of watersheds and hydraulic systems of urban and river floods are highly nonlinear and contain uncertain variables. Therefore, the predicted time series of rainfall-runoff data in flood analysis is not suitable for existing neural networks. To overcome the challenge of prediction, a NARX (Nonlinear Autoregressive Exogenous Model), which is a kind of recurrent dynamic neural network that maximizes the learning ability of a neural network, was applied to forecast a flood in real-time. At the same time, NARX has the characteristics of a time-delay neural network. In this study, a hydrological model was constructed for the Taehwa river basin, and the NARX time-delay parameter was adjusted 10 to 120 minutes. As a result, we found that precise prediction is possible as the time-delay parameter was increased by confirming that the NSE increased from 0.530 to 0.988 and the RMSE decreased from 379.9 ㎥/s to 16.1 ㎥/s. The machine learning technique with NARX will contribute to the accurate prediction of flow rate with an unexpected extreme flood condition.

A full-scale static test for a composite structure small aircraft (KC-100) was conducted in the KARI. The test includes 15 full-scale test and 7 local test conditions. Test requirements with test schedule, test article with dummy structures, test load generation, test system, and equipment are introduced for the test. Test load data of the 1st test condition(U1) was analyzed to evaluate an accuracy of load control for the test. The analysis results show that load data obtained during test were within tolerance of Static Null Pacing Error(SNPE) and the error value of load control was 8.6N. The error of load controls for the full-scale static test using dozens of actuators was calculated by a method suggested by authors. Test data for all other test conditions is also shown in this paper. Finally, reactions measured from restraint system of the U1 test condition show that the reaction changes as load increment. The factors which may change the change of reactions for a full-scale static test are introduced in this study.

Recently, digital tomosynthesis system (DTS) has been developed to reduce overlap using conventional X-ray and to overcome high patient dose problem using computed tomography (CT). The purpose of this study was to develop image reconstruction algorithm and to evaluate image characteristics and dose with chest digital tomosynthesis (CDT) system. Image reconstruction was used for filtered back-projection (FBP) methods and system geometry was constructed ${\pm}10^{\circ}$, ${\pm}15^{\circ}$, ${\pm}20^{\circ}$, and ${\pm}30^{\circ}$ angular range for acquiring phantom images. Image characteristics carried out root mean square error (RMSE) and signal difference-to-noise ratio (SDNR), and dose is evaluated effective dose with ${\pm}20^{\circ}$ angular range. According to the results, the phantom image with slice thickness filter has superb RMSE and SDNR, and effective dose was 0.166 mSv. In conclusion, we demonstrated usefulness of developed CDT image reconstruction algorithm and we constructed CDT basic output data with measuring effective dose.
KOMPSAT-5 is the first satellite in Korea equipped with X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) instrument and has been operated since August 2013. KOMPSAT-5 is used to monitor the global environment according to its observation purpose and the availability of KOMPSAT-5 is also highlighted as the need of high resolution wind data for investigating the coastal region. However, the previous study for the validation of wind derived from KOMPSAT-5 showed that the accuracy is lower than that of other SAR satellites. Therefore, in this study, we developed the correction equation of normalized radar cross section (NRCS or backscattering coefficient) for improvement of wind from the KOMPSAT-5 and validated the effect of the equation using the in-situ measurement of ocean buoys. Theoretical estimated NRCS and observed NRCS from KOMPSAT-5 showed linear relationship with incidence angle. Before applying the correction equation, the accuracy of the estimated wind speed showed the relatively high root-mean-square errors (RMSE) of 2.89 m s-1 and bias of -0.55 m s-1. Such high errors were significantly reduced to the RMSE of 1.60 m s-1 and bias of -0.38 m s-1 after applying the correction equation. The improvement effect of the correction equation showed dependency relying on the range of incidence angle.
