  • The ITU-R model for cross-polarization, which is accurate enough in real rainfall environments, is proposed in this paper. By comparing this with measurement data and the ITU-R model, we have also derived a prediction model for rain cross-polarization applicable upto millimeter wave band.

  • Diffraction anomalies in the periodic strip grating over a grounded dielectric layer are investigated for the plane wave incidence case of both arbitrary(oblique) incidence angle and arbitrary polarization by use of the spectral domain method combined with the sampling theorem. Some numerical results for the Bragg and Off-Bragg blazing phenomena for the cases of arbitrary incidence angle and polarization as well as TE and TM polarization are presented along with discussions on those phenomena.

  • In this paper, we fabricated a pair of circulaly polarized conical horn antennas for evaluating the scattering characteristics of a hemispherical reflector and of propagation characteristics in in-building environments, which is required for constructing a new wireless in-building communication system of microwave band consisted of a hemispherical reflector installed on the ceiling. The measurements show the fairly good features such that cross-polarization discremination more than 27 dB and axial-ratio less than 1.25 dB.

X밴드 이중-편파 레이더에 있어서의 강우량 산정

  • 수문학자들의 주요 관심사 중 하나인 정확한 면적 강우량을 파악하는데 있어서 강우레이더는 아주 우수한 첨단 장비이다. 그러나 S 밴드나 C 밴드 레이더를 고지대에서 운영하는 것은 많은 시설비와 운영비가 필요하다. 따라서 연구 및 대도시 소유역에 대한 강우 관찰 목적으로는 차량 탑재가 가능한 소형 X 밴드 레이더가 유용할 수 있다. X 밴드 전파는 강우 도래시 전파특성상 감쇠(減衰:attenuation)가 크며, 감쇠도는 강우강도에 영향을 받는다. 이를 극복하기 위한 이중-편파 이론이 1970년대에 제시되었으나, 기술적인 어려움으로 20여년이 지난 1990년대에 실무적용이 가능하게 되었다. 현재 이중-편파 레이더의 도입으로 감쇠보정 알고리듬이 성공적으로 개발되고 있으며, 그와 같은 발상의 전환은 차등위상(differential phase)에 의한 강우 측정방법 개발로 전파 감쇠에 영향을 받지 않는 강우 관측이 가능하게 하였다. 본 기사에서는 소형 X밴드 이중-편파(偏波) 레이더의 강우량 산정방법에 대하여 간략히 검토하고자 한다.

  • A full-polarimetric scatterometer(HPS: Hongik Polarimetric Scatterometer) for X-band is designed, fabricated, and verified using the theoretically well-known point-targets in this paper. The X-band full-polarimetric scatterometer consists of an OMT(Orthogonal-Mode Transducer)+horn antenna, the angle control part for the OMT+horn antenna, a transmitter/receiver with a network analyzer and a frequency-conversion circuitry, and a movable support of these parts. We use an inclinometer sensor to control the vertical and horizontal incidence angles. The full polarimetric data can be obtained because of the polarization switches and the OMT. The accuracy of the scatterometer system is verified by measuring the polarimetric RCS(Radar Cross Section) of one of the theoretically well-known point-targets, i.e., a corner reflector.

A Reconfigurable Circularly Polarized Microstrip Antenna on a Cross-Shape Slotted Ground (십자형 접지면 슬롯을 이용한 재구성 가능한 원형 편파 마이크로스트립 안테나)

  • A compact circular microstrip patch antenna with a switchable circular polarization(CP) is proposed at 2.4 GHz. An unequal cross-shaped slot on a ground plane is utilized as a perturbation. By switching pin diodes mounted on the slot, the CP sense of each antenna can be simply switched from left-handed(LH) CP to right-handed(RH) CP vice versa. Since the perturbation can be made on the ground plane and no bias circuit is required on the patch side, the bias circuit has not effect on the main beam radiation. From the experimental results, the impedance bandwidth and CP bandwidth of the proposed antenna have shown up to 150 MHz and 35 MHz, respectively. The peak gain of the proposed antenna is 1.7 dBi for both CP senses.

  • The extent of a rectangular conducting plane for measuring electromagnetic interference is discussed. Mutual coupling between the transmit and receive antennas is negligible, the effects of the ground plane on the normalized site attenuation(NSA) are considered by applying GTD(Geometric theory of diffraction). The calculation was done for the case that measuring distance(d) was 3 m for both horizontal and vertical polarizations. As the result, the size of the rectangular ground plane almost never affects upon NSA for horizontal polarization, but for vertical case, when both width and length of the rectangular plane are several times as long as distance, the effects of the edges are reduced under 1 dB.

  • This paper addresses the problem of combining adaptive polarization processing and space-time processing for further performance improvement of radar target detection in clutter and Jammer environments. Since the most straightforward cascade combinations have quite limited performance improvement potentials, we focus on the development of adaptive processing in the joint polarization-space-time domain. Unlike a direct extension of some existing space-time processing algorithms to the joint domain, the processing algorithm developed in this paper does not need a potentially costly polarization filter bank to cover the unknown target polarization parameter. The performance of the new algorithm is derived and evaluated in terms of the probability of detection and the probability of false alarm, and it is compared with other algorithms that do not utilize the polarization information or assume that the target polarization is known.

A Study on the Diversity Scheme with Directional Antennas for Indoor Environments (실내 환경에서 지향성 안테나에 따른 다이버시티 기법 연구)

  • In this paper, we fabricated dual polarization microstrip array antenna to analyze the performance of polarization diversity of each antennas beamwidth and recommend suitable polarizations diversity antenna under indoor environments. The proposed antennas which have directional beam patterns are small, light and thin. Also they are $1\times4$ array and $4\times4$ array antenna with $70^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$ beamwidth, respectively. The center frequency is 1890 MHz, IMT-2000's frequency. We also measured the antennas characteristics of each beamwidth in various waveguide structured corridor and compared then with the case of space diversity using the dipole antenna. The measurement shows that the polarization diversity using directional dual polarization microstrip array antennas has more 1~7 dB diversity gain than the space diversity using the dipole antenna. Therefore, the proposed antennas are expected to be efficiently used for the design of optimal directional beam pattern antenna and diversity system for indoor environments.
