Optical Tensile-Strain Sensor using Depolarized Guided Acoustic-Wave Brillouin Scattering (간단한 구조를 갖는 Depolarized-GAWB산란을 이용한 광섬유 변형율 센서)

  • A tensile-strain measurement method is proposed based on Depolarized Guided Acoustic-wave Brillouin Scattering (DGAWBS). The effect of tensile-strain applied to an optical fiber is investigated experimentally, observing that the resonance spectrum increases the measurement accuracy of DGAWBS at the TR25 mode. This paper presents a simple structure as tensile-strain sensor using two analyzers after sensing fiber.

  • We analyze the electro-optic polarization transmission characteristics of liquid crystal cells in the Poincare sphere representation. We determine fundamental conditions on maximizing of brightness and contrast ratio of liquid crystal display devices for polychromatic light by use of retardation films. For optimizing two colors, at least two properly designed retardation films are needed, and for three wavelengths, either it can be approximated to the two-color case or three retardation films are needed.

  • Recently, coherent control of exciton populations has been demonstrated through terahertz, reflection, and four-wave-mixing experiments. However, the most direct probe of exciton population control is the absorption, which has been lacking in previous studies. In this report, we probe the time evolution of exciton population directly through a transmission experiment. In particular, using upconversion technique with both narrow (spectrally broad) and long (spectrally narrow) pulses, we can obtain both the temporal and the spectral information. The main thrust of our report is that when phase controlled, the second pulse can be either greatly enhanced or completely destroyed by gaining energy from exciton (thus destroying the exciton population) or giving all of its energy to the system (thus greatly increasing the exciton population), respectively.   • A novel passive TE/TM polarization mode converter is fabricated by using poled polymer waveguides. The optic axis of the poling induced waveguide is slowly rotated by using a slowly varying structure of poling electrodes. Thus the polarization conversion is achieved as the guided mode propagates through the waveguide. The proposed device is simulated by a full vectorial beam propagation method (VBPM) for anisotropic medium. For the rotation length of 1 mm, the TE polarization of the guided mode is successfully converted to the TM polarization with negligible loss. Based on the simulation results, we fabricated the polarization converter which is tested by using 1.3 $\mu$m laser diode. TE to TM mode conversion is observed with a polarization extinction ratio higher than 30 dB, and the excess loss is less than 1 dB. The polarization conversion is relatively insensitive to wavelength since the device contains no periodic structures. These devices are easier to fabricate than others containing periodic structures.

  • The effect of decorrelation on the coincidence is investigated with correlated photons produced by parametric down-conversion process. The degree of correlation between photon pairs is adjusted by changing the polarization dependent transmissivities of thin glass plate\ulcorner in front of two detectors. It was found that the single counts of each detectors are proportional to the transmissivity and the coincidence is proportional to the product of transmissivities of the glasses in front of two detectors.

  • 지방족 액정 계면활성제를 주형물질로 이용, 화학석출을 통해 나노채널을 갖는 금속미립자를 제조하였다. 편광현미경을 이용한 상태도 분석을 통해 헥사고날 구조를 갖는 주형생성 조건을 결정하였으며, 주형의 배열을 방해하지 않고 화학석출이 가능하도록 환원제의 종류, 농도 및 석출방식 등을 조절하였다. 제조된 금속미립자는 입도분석기를 이용하여 평균입경을 측정하였고, TEM 분석을 통해 나노채널의 형성여부를 확인하였다. BET를 이용한 표면적 측정결과, 비표면적이 $112.6m^2/g$로 나노채널 형성으로 인해 비표면적이 크게 증가하였음을 알 수 있었다.

A Study of the Output Characteristics of a 1-kW-class Narrow-bandwidth PM Fiber Laser Depending on Its Pumping Structure (펌핑 구조에 따른 1 kW급 협대역 편광 유지 광섬유 레이저의 출력 특성 연구)

  • This paper presents a study of laser output characteristics. We fabricated a MOPA (master oscillator power amplifier)-type high-power, narrowbandwidth fiber laser with a bidirectional pumping configuration in its main amplifier. As signal beams, light sources with bandwidths of 3 GHz and 10 GHz-phase-modulated through a PRBS (pseudo-random binary sequence)-were used interchangeably. Furthermore, the characteristics of the SBS (stimulated Brillouin scattering) were analyzed using a signal beam with 3 GHz bandwidth, by adjusting the forward to backward pumppower ratio. Moreover, the characteristics of the transverse mode instability were analyzed by adjusting the forward to backward pump-power ratio, using a signal beam with 10-GHz bandwidth. Finally, the output power from 10 GHz bandwidth was amplified to more than 1 kW using a forward to backward pump-power ratio of 1.6. The beam quality M2 was measured to be approximately 1.36, and the optical-to-optical efficiency was 80% at maximum output power.

A STUDY ON THE OPTIMAL ILLUMINATION POWER OF DIFOTI (DIFOTI 영상 최적화를 위한 광량에 대한 연구)

  • This study was performed to compare the quality of image processing between the newly developed prototype using light emitting diode(LED) and the conventional $DIFOTI^{TM}$ system(EOS Inc., USA). To estimate the optimal light emitting power for the improved images, primary enamel surfaces treated under Carbopol 907 de-mineralizing solution were taken daily during 20 days of experimental periods by both DIFOTI systems. The results of comparative analyses on the images obtained from both systems with polarized image as gold standard can be summarized as follows: 1. Trans-illumination indices of images taken from primary enamel surfaces were decreased with time in both systems. 2. The differences of intensity of luminance between sound and de-mineralized enamel surface in prototype DIFOTI system was shown to be relatively smaller than conventional $DIFOTI^{TM}$ system. 3. From the comparative analysis of images from both DIFOTI system with polarized images as gold standard, the difference between sound and de-mineralized enamel surface of intensity of luminance of $DIFOTI^{TM}$ system was more correlated to polarized images than prototype of DIFOTI system. With the optimal LED emitting power, the control of aperture of digital camera is considered as the another key factor to improve the DIFOTI images. For the best image quality and analysis, the development of the improved image processing software is required.

Criterion Suggestion on Relative Disparity, Viewing Distance and Viewing Angle to Minimize 3D Visual Fatigue for Pattern-Retarded Type 3D Display (편광식 3D 디스플레이를 위한 상대적 시차, 시청 거리, 시청 방위에서의 시각피로 최소화 기준 제안)

  • 3D visual fatigue is known as one of the most important factors that interfere the commercial success of 3D contents. Vergence-accommodation conflict, which is known to occur when an observer watches an image containing binocular disparity presented on a 3D display, has been suggested as a major cause of 3D visual fatigue. This implies that any image incorporating binocular disparity might cause 3D visual fatigue. In order to reduce 3D visual fatigue, it would be necessary to consider indirect ways of reducing 3D visual fatigue as well as eliminating the direct causes of 3D visual fatigue. We have examined the effect of the variables that are expected to affect subjective 3D visual fatigue and these variables included the relative disparity contained in an image, viewing distance and viewing angle. We have also figured out the proper levels of the variables required to minimize 3D visual fatigue. The results indicate that observers began to report significant 3D visual fatigue when the crossed disparity contained in an image exceeded 7.22' and the vertical viewing angle was larger than 15 degree.
