  • Recently, there are problems due to the exhaustion of natural aggregate resources, and strict restrictions. In this study, the possibility of using Water Granulated Ferro-Nickel slag as a substitutive material of fine aggregate is determined from the properties of mechanical and durability for the concrete that is made with Water Granulated Ferro-Nickel slag. According to the test results, when the mixing rate of Water Granulated Ferro-Nickel Slag aggregates concrete is adjusted, up to 50% of its aggregates by mixing rate can be mixed with general aggregates. The optimum mix ratio is considered to be 40%. The freezing and thawing resistance of Water Granulated Ferro-Nickel Slag aggregates concrete is identical to that of general aggregates concrete, while the carbonation resistance is found to be same as or lower than that of general aggregates concretes.

  • Ferronickel slag is a by-product from the ferronickel smelting process and it is divided into air-cooled ferronickel slag and water granulated ferronickel slag according to cooling system. The purpose of this experimental resesrch is to investigate the mechanical properties and resistance to freezing and thawing of concrete using air-cooled ferronickel slag(ACFNS) fine aggregate. For this purpose, the concrete specimens with water-cement ratio of 50% were made with ACFNS's replacement ratios of 0%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 70%, and 100% by volume of fine aggregate. It was observed from the test results that the compressive strength and static modulus of elasticity of ACFNS fine aggregate concrete were increased with increasing replacement ratio of ACFNS and the resistance to freezing and thawing of this was similar to reference concrete which had the relative dynamic modulus of elasticity of more than 90% during the freezing and thawing of 300 cycles.

  • Fine aggregate made of ferronickel slag(FNS) is similar to natural fine aggregates and is used in concrete structures both domestically and abroad, but its applications and research areas are limited. In this research, in order to expand the availability of FNS and improve the performance of cement mortar products, the applicability of FNS on dry mortar for floor was examined. Experimental results show that FNS improves flow of cement mortar because it has low absorption rate, spherical shape, and glassy surface. Also, the high stiffness of the FNS aggregate itself is considered to contribute to the improvement of cement mortar quality such as crack reduction by improving the compressive strength and shrinkage reducing. In addition, when FNS fine aggregate is applied, it was possible to secure the impact sound insulation performance equal to or higher than that of mortar using natural fine aggregate.

  • This experimental study investigates the replacement of conventional Portland cement and sand with non-sintered cement and ferro-nickel slag to formulate eco-friendly cement mortar. The examination aimed to understand the strength properties of non-sintered cement mortar using ferro-nickel slag as fine aggregate by classifying mortar production types, fine aggregates, and curing methodologies. From flexural and compressive strength tests, it was observed that non-sintered cement mortars, incorporating ferro-nickel slag as fine aggregate, exhibited superior strength when compared to both plain mortar and steam-cured non-sintered mortar. This increased strength is attributed to the influence of the particle size, density, and absorption capabilities of the ferro-nickel slag. Furthermore, X-ray Diffraction(XRD) analyses of the mortars verified the presence of MgO, a component of ferro-nickel slag, in the form of a composite oxide. This finding substantiates the consistent strength manifestation of non-sintered cement mortars utilizing ferro-nickel slag as a fine aggregate.

  • Converter steel slag(BOF slag) is a vast amount of solid waste generated in the steelmaking process which has very low utilization rate in Korea. Due to the presence of free CaO which can derive bad volume stability in BOF slag, it usually land filled. For recycling BOF and identify its applicability as fine aggregate, this study investigates the fundamental characteristics of mortar with cement replaced ferronickel slag(FNS), which has the potential to be used as a binder. The results suggest that the mineral phases of BOF slag mainly include larnite(CaSiO4), mayenite(Ca12Al14O33) and wuestite(FeO) while olivine crystallines are shown in FNS. The results of flow and setting time reveals that the flowability and process of hardening increased when the amount of FNS and BOF slag incorporated was increased. The length change shows that the amount of change in the length of the mortar was almost constant regardless of mix proportion while compressive strength was reduced. Micro structure test results revealed that FNS or/and BOF slag mix took a long time to react in the cement matrix to form a complete hydration products. To achieve the efficient utilization of B OF slag as construction materials, proper replacement rate is necessary.

  • Most of the existing research on ferronickel slag has focused on its potential as aggregate and fine aggregate, this study was conducted focusing on the potential of ferronickel slag powder as a concrete admixture. For concrete, which fly ash, blast furnace slag, and FSP were mixed with each 10 % type the reactivity was evaluated by applying ASTM C 1260 of the United States. As a result, compared with the control group, the expansion rate of fly ash decreased by 8.43 % and that of fine blast furnace slag powder decreased by 14.46 %, while the expansion rate of ferronickel slag decreased by 49.40 %. it was confirmed that ferronickel slag can sufficiently be replaced existing supplementary cementitious admixtures such as fly ash and blast furnace slag in terms of suppressing the reactivity of aggregates. However as a result of SEM analysis, ettringites were generated, and additional research about how it affects concrete is needed.

  • The Physical performance of use materials was evaluated to improve durability of fast-paced repair mortar used at rapid construction sites. The fastening performance and basic performance were evaluated by substituting ferronickel grinding slag residues, rapid settlement, and EVA-based polymer for mortar. As a result, the compressive strength, flexural strength and adhesion strength were increased due to the use of FS Fine Aggregate and RS Fine Aggregate. The chloride ion promotion test of fast-polymer mortar kept the chloride inhibitory performance from 7 days to 28 days when fNS was used less than 50%. Durability degradation due to the use of FS Fine Aggregate and RS Fine Aggregate has not been found, and it is believed that further consideration of economic and long-term durability will be required for use as alternative Aggregate for construction and civil engineering.

  • For sustainable development in the construction industry, blast furnace slag has been used as a substitute for cement in concrete. In contrast, ferronickel slag, which is the by-product generated during smelting to ferronickel used in the manufacturing of stainless steel and nickel alloys, has a limitation to use as a binder and an aggregate due to its expansive characteristics. Recently, stabilization technology of ferronickel slag has been improved and studies have been carried out to utilize ferronicke slag as fine aggregate in concrete. Therefore, in this study, basic mechanical properties of concrete used in ferronickel slag aggregate was evaluated. The compressive strength (24, 30, 40 MPa) and replacement rate of ferronickel slag aggregate (0, 10, 25, 50%) were considered as experimental variables. As a result of test, concrete replaced fine aggregate with 25% ferronickel slag aggregate showed superior performance in the compressive strength and flexural strength.
