Electrochemical and Mechanical Characteristics of Covalently Cross-Linked SPEEK Polymer Electrolyte Membrane for Water Electrolysis (수전해용 공유가교 SPEEK 고분자 전해질 막의 전기 화학적 및 기계적 특성)

  • The covalently cross-linked sulfonated polyetheretherketone (CL-SPEEK) membrane was prepared by four-step synthesis of sulfonation-sulfochlorination, partial reduction, lithiation, and cross-linking, and its electrochemical and mechanical properties were investigated for water electrolysis application. The prepared ion exchange membranes showed good electrochemical and mechanical properties; proton conductivity of 0.116 S/cm at $80^{\circ}C$, water uptake of 44.6%, ion exchange capacity of 1.75 meq/g-dry-memb., tensile strength of 64.25 MPa and elongation of 61.11%. The membrane electrode assembly (MEA) with homemade membranes were prepared by non-equilibrium impregnation-reduction (I-R) method. Especially, the electrochemical surface area (ESA) and roughness factor of CL-SPEEK electrolyte by cyclic voltammetry method were 23.46 $m^2/g$ and 307.3 $cm^2-Pt/cm^2$, respectively. The prepared MEA was used in the unit cell of water electrolysis and the cell voltage was 1.81 V at 1 A/$cm^2$ and $80^{\circ}C$, with platinum loadings of 1.31 mg/$cm^2$.

Biocontrol of Cabbage Clubroot by the Organic Fertilizer Using Streptomyces sp. AC-3. (Streptomyces sp. AC-3을 이용한 배추 무사마귀병의 생물학적 방제)

  • This research is performed for a biological control of Chinese cabbage clubroot, we isolated an antagonistic bacterium AC-3 against Plasmodiophora sp., causal pathogens of cabbage clubroot. The isolated strain was identified as Streptomyces sp. by culture morphology, biochemical reactions, and homology research based on l6S rDNA sequences. Streptomyces sp. AC-3 produced chitinase (9.3 units/$m\ell$) in culture broth. So Plasmodiophora sp. mycelia changed abnonnal swelling, curling and branching mycelia by Streptomyces sp. AC-3 culture. In a field infected by Plasmodiophora sp., the treatment of a organic fertilizer added 2% Streptomyces sp. AC-3 microbial inoculant, it resulted in about 50% reducing the severity of cabbage clubroot significantly on cabbage plants compared with treated organic fertilizer plants. Additional disease such as sclerotinia rot, fusarium wilt and pythium rot were also significantly reduced by the treatment of the organic fertilizer added Streptomyces sp. AC-3 microbial inoculant.

  • The hyaluronic acid (HA) with excellent biocompatibility can be combined with the monomer polylactide with good biodegradability to produce biocompatible materials which can control the period of degradation in a human body. By freeze drying method, HA and the lactic acid, monomer of polylactide, or lactide, the ester dimer of polylactide, were crosslinked with crosslinking agent, l-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide. The analysis of infrared spectroscopy showed that the ester linkage was formed and the analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy showed that the ester linkage was due to the reaction of lactic acid and HA. The conversion (6∼32%) and degree of crosslinking (4∼19%) increased but the selectivity was almost constant at 62% as the mole ratio of LA to HA increased from 1 to 10 in the crosslinking reaction. The brittleness became more pronounced and the rate of degradation became faster with more addition of lactic acid resulting from the higher ratio of LA to HA, and the swelling ratio was in the range of 500 to 2000%.

  • Homopolymer distribution in block copolymer/homopolymer blends was investigated as a function of homopolymer concentration and homopolymer molecular weight. The deuterated poly(methyl methacrylate) or polystyrene was blended with a deuterated polystyrene-poly(methyl methacrylate) diblock copolymer up to a concentration of 20 wt%. Samples were characterized by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), neutron reflectivity and transmission electron microscopy. The block copolymer with a thin-film geometry formed alternating lamellar microdomains oriented parallel to the substrate surface. By adding the homopolymer, the microdomain structure was significantly disturbed. As a consequence, a poorly ordered morphology appeared when the homopolymer concentration exceeded 15 wt%. Increasing the homopolymer concentration and/or the homopolymer molecular weight caused the microdomains to swell less uniformly, resulting in segregation of the homopolymer toward the middle of the microdomains.

  • In this study, Br-PPO was developed by applying additive organic particles through a suspension polymerization synthesis method. The anion exchange membrane fuel cell system performance was evaluated using it to an anion exchange membrane. To improve the performance, organic ion exchange particles were prepared and added to the anion exchange membrane. Chemical structure analysis and synthesis were determined through FT-IR and NMR, and tensile strength and thermal stability were measured through TGA and UTM to determine whether it could be driven. Before the anion exchange membrane fuel cell test, the performance was evaluated by measuring the ion conductivity and ion exchange capacity. Finally, the Br-PPO-TMA-SDV (0.7%) anion exchange membrane with excellent ion conductivity and ion exchange capacity was introduced into the fuel cell system. Its performance was compared with FAA-3-50, a commercial membrane, to determine whether it could be introduced into a fuel cell system.

Physicochemical Properties of Hydroxypropylated Waxy Rice Starches and its Application to Yukwa (하이드록시프로필화 찹쌀 전분의 이화학적 성질 및 유과제조 특성)

  • Physicochemical properties of hydroxypropylated waxy rice starches were investigated to reduce steeping-time of yukwa (Korean oil-puffed rice snack) processing. Swelling power of hydroxypropylated waxy rice starch increased at relatively higher temperature $(60^{\circ}C)$ than native waxy rice starch $(70^{\circ}C)$. Solubility of hydroxypropylated waxy rice starches increased with increasing propylene oxide content. Pasting temperature $(66.3-66.9^{\circ}C)$ and peak viscosity (216-232 RVU) of hydroxypropylated waxy rice starch were higher than those of native starch (179 RVU) and increased with increasing propylene oxide content. DSC thermal transitions of hydroxypropylated waxy rice starches shifted toward higher temperature. Amylopectin melting enthalpy of hydroxypropylated waxy rice starch (8.4-9.2 J/g) was similar to native starch (9.0 J/g). X-ray diffraction patterns of native and hydroxypropylated waxy rice starches showed typical A-type pattern with no significant differences between them, suggesting hydroxypropylation only affected amorphous region. Results suggest hydroxypropylated waxy rice starch is not applicable for yukwa due to low puffing efficiency and dark color.

Pervaporation Separation of Ethanol Aqueous Solution through Carbonate-type Polyurethane Membrane III. The Effect of Zwitterionic Group (카보네이트형 폴리우레탄막을 이용한 에탄올 수용액의 투과증발분리 III. 양쪽이온성기에 의한 영향)

  • NCO-terminated prepolymers were synthesized by reacting carbonate-type polyol(PTMCG)($M_w=1,000$ and 2,000) with MDI and N-methyldiethanolamine, as a chain extender. Carbonate-type polyurethane containg zwitterionic group was prepared by reacting the prepolymer with 1,3-propane sultone. From the IR and NMR spectra of model reactions, it was known that the ionization occurred under the same condition. The structure of zwitterionic carbonate-type polyurethane(ZPU) therefore could be confirmed from the model reactions. Glass transition temperature(Tg) ranged between $-15{\sim}-30^{\circ}C$ from the thermal data. Tg was between $-15{\sim}-18^{\circ}C$ for a series of ZPU10 samples and between $-25{\sim}-26^{\circ}C$ for a series of ZPU20 polymers. Tensile strength increased with mole ratio of ionic content. On the contrary, elongation was rather dropped with mole ratio of ionic content. ZPU10-30 having better tensile strength and less elongation was selected as a membrane for the concentration of ethanol aqueous solution through pervaporation. To obtain the better selectivity, it was crosslinked with HMDI. In the swelling test, it showed the higher swelling degree at around 50wt% ethanol concentration due to the plastization effect of ethanol. To optimize the separation capacity, two operating factors-feed concentration and temperature-were considered. The overall separation capacity was as follows : separation factor, 2~83.2 ; the flux, $25.4{\sim}58.8g/m^2hr$.

Study of Molecular and Crystalline Structure and Physicochemical Properties of Rice Starch with Varying Amylose Content (아밀로오스 함량이 다른 쌀 전분의 분자 및 결정 구조와 이화학적 특성)

  • The in vitro digestibility and molecular and crystalline structures of rice starches (Seilmi, Dasan1, and Segoami) with differing amylose content were investigated. Segoami had the highest amylose content (30.9%), whereas Dasan1 had the lowest amylose content (21.2%). The molecular weight ($\bar{M}_w$) of amylose and amylopectin in Segoami was much lower than that of the other two rice starches. Segoami had the highest proportion (8.7%) of amylopectin short branch chains (DP 6-12) and the lowest proportion of B1 chains (DP 13-24). The relative crystallinity, intensity ratio of $1047-1022cm^{-1}$ (1047/1022) and gelatinization enthalpy followed the order: Segoami>Seilmi~Dasan1. Segoami showed substantially low pasting viscosity. Rapidly digestible starch (RDS), slowly digestible starch (SDS), and resistant starch (RS) contents showed the highest value in Seilmi, Dasan1, and Segoami, respectively. The expected glycemic index (eGI) of Segoami was lower than that of the other two rice starches. Overall results suggested that the digestibility of rice starch could be highly influenced by their molecular and crystalline structure.

Extraction of starch from frozen potato whole-tissues using cellulase and its physicochemical properties (셀룰로오스분해효소에 의한 동결감자로부터 전분의 추출 및 물리화학적 특성)

  • This study investigated the impact of cellulase treatment on the extraction yield of potato starch (PS), and compared the physicochemical properties of PS by conventional (CSE) and enzymatic (ESE) starch extraction. In ESE, the PS extraction yield was predominantly influenced by reaction temperature, time and their interaction, compared to the cellulase concentration. When potatoes were treated for 8 h at $40^{\circ}C$ with 1.5% cellulase, the PS extraction yield was about 3.4-fold higher than that by CSE. Compared to CSE-PS, ESE-PS showed lower total starch contents and higher amylose contents, resulting in lower swelling factors and distorted pasting viscosity profiles accompanied by absence of peak and breakdown viscosities. However, ESE did not affect the gelatinization characteristics of PS. Overall results suggested that ESE can provide the highest yield of PS, and ESE-PS can be a potential starch source for extending the utilization of PS in food industries.

The Effects of Hot Water Extraction of Wood Meal and the Addition of CaCl2 on Bending Strength and Swelling Ratio of Wood-Cement Board (목질(木質)의 열수추출(熱水抽出) 및 CaCl2 첨가(添加)가 목질(木質)-세멘트 보드의 휨강도(强度) 및 팽윤율(膨潤率)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • The effects of pre-treatments, the hot water extraction of wood meal and the addition of chemical ($CaCl_2$) to wood-cement water system on the properties of wood-cement composite such as modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE), water sorption ratio and swelling ratio of resulting boards were studied in this experiment. The wood meals through 0.83mm(20 mesh) and retained on 0.42mm(35 mesh) screen were prepared from Pinus densiflora S. at Z. and Larix leptolepsis G. For hot water extraction, 500 grams of wood meal for each species were heated to boiling with 1,500ml of distilled water in 2-liter beaker for 6 hours. Every 2 hours, the wood meals were washed with boiling distil1ed water and reheated to boiling again. After 6 hours boiling, the boiled wood particles were collected by pouring this particles on 200 mesh screen. The collected particles then washed twice with hot distilled water and dried for 24 hours in an oven at $109{\pm}20^{\circ}C$. A mixture of 663.4 grams of cement with 331.7 grams of wood meal based on oven-dry weight were dry-mixed in a plastic vessel. The mixture was kneaded with 497.6ml of distilled water in the ratio of 1.5ml of water to a gram of wood meal. To add calcium chloride to the mixture as an accelerator, $CaCl_2$ 4% solution by weight per volume, was added to pine-or larch-cement board in the ratio of 3% to cement weight. To set wood-cement board, this mixture was clamped at 30cm ${\times}$ 30cm, in thickness of 1.5cm for 3 days at room temperature, declamped and then placed at open condition for 17 days. The target density was 1.0. The four specimens sized to 5cm in width and 28cm in length were used for MOR and MOE test for each treatment. After MOR test, the tested specimens were cut to the size of 5cm ${\times}$ 5cm for water sorption and swelling test. The twenty specimens used to measure the water sorption ratio (soaking 24 hours) and ten of these were used for swelling ratio measurement The results obtained were as follows: 1) Larch was not suitable for wood-cement boards because larch-cement board developed no strength, but pine showed 97.9kg/$cm^2$ by hot water extraction. 2) To increase MOR, hot water extraction was more effective than the addition of $CaCl_2$ in pine and larch because the $CaCl_2$ addition was seemed to speed up the ratio of cement hydration without reacting with the wood substances. 3) The water sorption ratio was lowered by the addition of $CaCl_2$ to wood-cement system because the chemical additive accelerated the rate of cement hydration. 4) In pine-cement board, the swelling ratio from 0.37 to 0.42 percent was observed in length and the swelling ratio from 0.88 to 2.0 percent in thickness. As a rule, the swelling ratio of wood-cement board was very low and the swelling ratio in thickness was higher than in length.
