This study attempts to estimate the economic effects of extreme climate events on agriculture with the case of Gangwon-do, drawing upon the Ricardian approach based upon the panel data on extreme climate events, soil and geography, farmland prices, and economic and social variables for the 11 municipal units of Gangwon-do during the period of 1993-2010. Our empirical analysis shows that the heavy rainfall-related extreme climate variable negatively affects the prices of rice paddy and dry farm field. The summer-related extreme temperature variables have negative economic impacts on the land values of both farmlands, while the winter-related ones positively affect them except for the extreme cold wave variable.
Previous studies show that tall people have better labor market outcomes, but controlling for their abilities reduces the size of height effects. This implies that a failure to properly control for one's ability could overestimate the OLS estimate. This paper contributes to the literature by being the first to control for individual fixed effects (FE) and to examine height effects on the probability of one's attaining a leadership position. The data used are panel data of a cohort obtained during the cohort's middle and high school years. In OLS estimation, this paper finds positive height effects for boys. However, when controlling for individual fixed effects, the estimate is not statistically significant. For girls, the height effects are found on neither OLS nor FE model.
We use a set of Korea panel data to estimate effects of legal working hours reduction on actual hours worked and employment effects, through panel econometrics methods. Taking account of sequential decrease in legal hours worked since 2004, we estimate the relationship between legal and actual working hours by size of industries. It is found that one hour reduction of legal hours per week caused 0.44 to 1.05 actual hours worked on average per week, depending on different industrial sizes. Also, estimated employment effects were not unanimously determined, rather they turn out to be clearly size-dependent, which provide different results from exiting literature. Our analysis proposed in this work can be restrictive as, for instance, there is significant lack of data for foreign workers, particularly in the small-sized industries. Subsequent empirical analysis is expected.
The Latent Growth Modeling(LGM) is known as the arising analysis method of longitudinal data and it could be classified into unconditional model and conditional model. Unconditional model requires estimated value of intercept and slope to complete a model of fitness. However, the existing LGM is in absence of a structured methodology to estimate slope when longitudinal data is neither simple linear function nor the pre-defined function. This study used Sequential Pattern of Association Rule Mining to calculate slope of unconditional model. The applied dataset is 'the Youth Panel 2001-2006' from Korea Employment Information Service. The proposed methodology was able to identify increasing fitness of the model comparing to the existing simple linear function and visualizing process of slope estimation.

This paper investigates how individual labor income is determined by initial conditions - such as educational attainment, age, and sex - and all the other conditions. Using KLIPS (Korea Labor & Income Panel Study) database, the paper finds, first, that over the period of 1998-2008, cross-sectional income distribution has deteriorated for the whole sample but not within each age group. Second, income mobility defined by the relative importance of initial conditions in individual income disparities has moderately increased in most age groups.
The foremost aim of the paper is to evaluate the flexibility and stability of the Korean labor market through a cross-country comparison with OECD countries. Evaluating by the OECD Employment Protection Legislation Index, the flexibility of permanent job layoff in Korea is close to the average of OECD countries. Employment of temporary workers appears to be relatively flexible allowing for effective indicators such as the proportion of temporary workers among paid employees. As regards security, the levels of job security, income security and combination security are all far below the OECD average. A panel data analysis of OECD countries reveals that labor productivity increases as regulations on permanent job layoff become looser and regulations on temporary employment become more rigorous.
In this paper, we conducted panel data analysis considering spatial correlation between regions, which were not considered in previous papers in analyzing the causes of fine dust concentration in Korea. Many existing researchers implicitly assume the independence of the effects of incomes and other explanatory variables of adjoining countries(or regions). Using panel data on fine dust concentration, this paper has established that existing EKC can be established even when considering the spatial correlation of the region, and when these effects are not taken into account, it can be underestimated or overestimated on the effects and causes of fine dust concentration.
This study aims to compare and analyze the impact of labor unions on job training programs using two different longitudinal data, Workplace Panel Survey (WPS) and Korean Labor and Inocme Panel Study (KLIPS). By applying the Correlated Random Effect (CRE) model to both individual-level and establishment-level data, we observe that labor unions increase the likelihood that establishments provide employees with job training programs and workers participate in the trainings. Our results shed light on the role of labor unions to increase the opportunities of job training programs for workers.
This study mainly investigates the port SOC's impact on trade volume. In order to investigate the relationships between port SOC and trade volume, we did the empirical analysis using panel data regression and fixed effects model. The total period of 97 years and 1,082 ports' information were applied to panel data and regression model. According to the results, the coefficients of development of container berth, development of bulk berth, maintenance of port, the jetty facilities like breakwater have positive(+) impact on the dependent variable, the trade volume. Especially, the jetty facilities show a strongly positive impact on trade volume. On the other hand, the development of new port and navigation facilities like lighthouse have a negative(-) impact. In examining Hausman test and LR test, the fixed effect model is statistically more appropriate than the random effect model for this study.
