  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of multiple application of all-in-one dentin adhesive system on microtensile bond strength to caries-affected dentin. Twenty one extracted human molars with occlusal caries extending into mid-dentin were prepared by grinding the occlusal surface flat. The carious lesions were excavated with the aid of caries detector dye. The following adhesives were applied to caries-affected dentin according to manufacturer's directions; $Scotchbond^{TM}$ Multi-Purpose in SM group, Adper Prompt $L-Pop^{TM}$ 1 coat in LP1 group, 2 coats in LP2 group, 3 coats in LP3 group, $Xeno^{(R)}$ III 1 coat in XN1 group, 2 coats in XN2 group. and 3 coats in XN3 group. After application of the adhesives, a cylinder of resin-based composite was built up on the occlusal surface. Each tooth was sectioned vertically to obtain the $1{\times}1\;mm^2$ sticks. The microtensile bond strength was determined. Each specimen was observed under SEM to examine the failure mode. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA. The results of this study were as follows; 1. The microtensile bond strength values were; SM ($14.38{\pm}2.01$ MPa), LP1 ($9.15{\pm}1.81$ MPa), LP2(14.08{\pm}1.75$ MPa), LP3 ($14.06{\pm}1.45$ MPa). XN1 (13.65{\pm}1.95$ MPa). XN2 ($13.98{\pm}1.60$) MPa, XN3 ($13.88{\pm}1.66$) MPa, LP1 was significantly lower than the other groups in bond strength (p < 0.05). All groups except LP1 were not significantly different in bond strength (p > 0.05). 2. In LP1, there were a higher number of specimens showing adhesive failure. Most specimens of all groups except LP1 showed mixed failure.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of the surface treatments of resin bases in indirect bracket bonding technique by study of shear bond strengths and failure patterns. Ninety metal brackets were bonded to the stone models of specimens involving bovine lower incisor with light-cured adhesive(Light-Bond). After removal of brackets with the resin base from the stone models, the surfaces of resin bases in thirty brackets were treated with Plastic Conditioner and the surfaces of resin bases in another thirty brackets were treated with sandblaster and the remaining thirty brackets were served as controls. All brackets were transferred to the specimens and bonded using sealant. The shear bond strength was tested on universal testing machine, and failure pattern was assessed with the adhesive remnant index(ARI). The results were as follows: 1. Surface treatments of resin bases with Plastic Conditioner or sandblasting showed statistically higher shear bond strengths than no treatment group. 2. No significant difference in shear bond strength was found between Plastic Conditioner treatment and sandblasting treatment groups. 3. No significant difference in ARI scores was found among the three groups. 4. As the result of correlation analysis between shear bond strengths and hnl scores, failure at adhesive/bracket base interface tends to increase when the shear bond strength was high, but it was not significant statistically. The above results suggest that improvement of bond strength can be obtained by surface treatment of resin base in the indirect bonding technique.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of thermocycling and type of porcelain restoration on shear bond strength (SBS) and mode of failure of monocrystalline ceramic brackets. Methods: A total of 60 porcelain discs were made and divided into three equal groups as follows: Ceramco 3, IPS Empress II, Zi-ceram/Vintage ZR. ceramic brackets were bonded to the prepared porcelain surfaces in the same manner. Each group was divided randomly into two subgroups: thermocycled group and non-thermocycled group (control). All samples were tested in shear mode on an universal testing machine. Results: SBS of the non-thermocycled group was clinically acceptable (Ceramco 3: $7.06\;{\pm}\;1.76\;MPa$, IPS Empress II: $7.55\;{\pm}\;2.38\;MPa$, Zi-ceram/Vintage ZR: $7.19\;{\pm}\;1.38\;MPa$). But, SBS of the thermocycled group was significantly reduced (Ceramco 3: $4.88\;{\pm}\;1.00\;MPa$, IPS Empress II: $5.46\;{\pm}\;1.35\;MPa$, Zi-ceram/Vintage ZR: $4.84\;{\pm}\;1.01\;MPa$, p < 0.05). There was no difference between the shear bond strength by type of porcelain restoration. All bonding failure occurred between bracket base and adhesive, except for 2 samples. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the type of porcelain restoration did not affect SBS, but thermocycling weakened SBS. Therefore, the effect of thermocycling should be considered when using ceramic brackets in practice.

  • For the comparison of bond strength between the Co-Cr alloy and ceramic, which are clinically used, test samples made with a traditional casting method as a control group), and Milling and SLM(3d printing group) samples were made as an experimental group. The metal-ceramic bond strength was measured with a universal testing machine. For the measurement, a three-point bending test was conducted. After the bond strength was measured, metal-ceramic interface was observed. According to the test result, casting group had 53.59 MPa, milling group had 45.90 MPa, and 3d printing group had 58.34 MPa. There was no statistical significance. With regard to failure pattern, most of the samples in two groups, showed mixed failure. This study showed a clinically applicable value when measuring the bond strength of alloy-ceramic material with an alloy produced by 3D printing.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes of shear bond strengths and failure patterns in orthodontic resin adhesives according to the water immersion time. Metal brackets were bonded to the specimens involving the premolars with chemical-cured($Concise^{\circledR}$) and light-cured($Transbond^{\circledR}$) adhesives. The shear bond strength was measured on universal testing machine and the failure patterns were assessed with the adhesive remnant index(ARI) after storage in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 1 day, 1 week and 1, 3, and 6 months, respectively. The results were as follows. 1. The shear bond strengths at the 6 month in both Concise and Transbond were significantly higher than those at the 1 day, 1 week and 1 month(p<0.05). There were positive correlations between shear bond strength and water immersion time in both Concise and Transbond(P<0.01). 2. There were no significant differences in shear bond strength between Concise and Transbond. 3. The brackets were failed primarily at the bracket base-adhesive interface and there was no significant difference in the incidence of ARI scores according to the water immersion time.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of various 3D printed denture base resins and the conventional denture base resin to various denture relining materials. Materials and Methods: For denture base materials, a heatcured (Vertex RS) and two types of 3D printed DENTCA Denture base II, NextDentTM Base) were used. And 4 types denture relining materials (Tokuyama Rebase II fast, Kooliner, Denture Liner, Denture Liner, Lang Jet Denture Repair Kit) with different components were used. It was classified into 12 groups. Adhesion was performed between the resin base and the relining materials in accordance with ISO/TS 11405 standard. The shear bonding strength was measured, and then the adhesion interface was observed with a stereoscopic microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The fracture pattern was investigated through the analysis of the fragment. Results: In the 3D printed denture resin group, the shear bonding strength with relining materials was significantly lower than that of the heat-cured resin group (P < 0.05). The group of polymethyl methacrylate -based relining materials, high shear bonding strength was shown regardless of the type of denture. As for the fracture pattern, adhesive fracture appeared in most groups, and cohesive, mixed fracture appeared in some groups. Conclusion: The polymethyl methacrylate -based denture relining materials showed high shear bonding strength values compared to other denture relining materials. But, for direct methods, it is considered advantageous in terms of shear bonding strength to use a isobutyl methacrylate-based denture relining materials.

  • The purpose of the present study was to seek bracket-adhesive combinations which have adequate bond strength with no enamel and bracket fracture. The shear bond strengths were measured, the sites of failure and the enamel damage were investigated and the peripheral sealing and adaptation between enamel surface, bonding adhesive and bracket were evaluated. 240 noncarious human premolars were divided into twenty four groups of ten teeth. Shear bond strengths of each group were determined in an universal testing machine after two days passed and the debonded specimens were inspected to determine the predominant bond failure sites. To evaluate peripheral sealing and adaption between enamel surface, adhesive and bracket, each specimen was cut longitudinally into two halves which included the midsection of the bracket, adhesive and enamel and exmined in scanning electron microscope. Six different types of brackets were bonded to the tooth with four different type of adhesives. Six different types of brackets were Image, Plastic, Crystaline, Fascination, Transcend 2000 and metal bracket and four different adhesives were No-mix, Light-Bond, OrthoLC and Superbond C&B. From this study, it may be concluded that (1) The mean shear bond strength varied from a high of 36.58 Kg (410.07 Kg/$cm^2$) with the Fascination-Light Bond combination group to a low of 8.93 Kg (75.51 Kg/$cm^2$) with theImage-OrthoLC combination group. When using OrthoLC as adhesive, the mean shear bond strength was significantly lower than that of other combination groups, (2) Regardless of adhesives, the mean shear bond strength of Fascination brackets was relatively high whereas Plastic and Image brackets had low shear bonding strength. The shear bond strength of Crystaline bracket and Transcend 2m was relatively equal to or lower than that of metal bracket, (3) There was a correlation between bond strength, enamel damage and bracket fracture. As the shear bond strength was increased, the rate of enamel damage and bracket fracture were increased, (4) The combination groups that use OrthoLC as adhesive were debonded in shear stress without enamel fracture and bracket fracture, whereas the combination groups that use Superbond C&B as adhesive experienced a relative high enamel fracture rate and bracket fracture rate, (5) Peripheral sealing and adaptation between enamel-adhesive-bracket were relatively good when using Light-Bond or No-mix as adhesive. Regardless of adhesives, adaptation between bracket-adhesive were relatively good in Ceramic brackets, (6) The combination groups which had adequate bonding strength with no enamel and bracket fracture were Crystaline-No mix, Crystaline-Light Bond, Crystaline-OrthoLC, metal-No mix, metal-Light Bond and metal-OrthoLC combination groups.
