F. occidentalis (WFT, western flower thrips) is a major pest in artificial chrysanthemum houses. Nnumber of WFT attracted to yellow sticky trap was highest at trap plant and lowest at 15 and 20m places away from trap plant. Number of WFT attracted to yellow stick trap when trap plant was placed in chrysanthemum house 30 days after planting (resident WFT) was 4.4~7.7 times more than at 5 and 10 m places away from trap plant and when trap plant was placed in chrysanthemum house immediately after planting (resident WFT) was 5.7~9.4 times more at 5 and 10 m places away from trap plant. Number of WFT between the place trap plant located and unlocated was undifferent when cultured chrysanthemum formed flower. In case of the plot that trap plant and natural enemy was used simultaneously, number of WFT was highter then chemicals plot. In case of the plot that trap plant and chamicals (chemicals was sprayed on trap plant only) WFT was controlled in trap plant place only but density of WFT on 5m and 10m places away from trap plant was increased. Therefore, WFT could be controlled effectively by use of trap plant (flowering yellow chrysanthemum) and natural enemy simultaneously.
The distribution of mosquitoes collected in the Cheongju area from 2016-2018 were compared. The collection sites were established at a residential area, migratory bird sanctuary, and cowshed using black light (BL) and BG sentinel traps. Culex pipiens was the most collected species in the residential area, and Aedes vexans was the most collected species in the migratory bird sanctuary and cowshed in all years. The BG trap collected more individuals than did the BL trap in the residential area and migratory bird sanctuary. In total, 22,679 (10 species) mosquitoes were collected in 2016, and 6,502 (8 species) and 6,803 (9 species) mosquitoes were collected in 2017 and 2018, accounting for 3.49- and 3.33-fold decreases, respectively. The relationship between meteorological conditions and mosquito density, according to various variables, was not significant different. The Chaoyang virus was found in Aedes vexans and Culex pipiens collected at the cowshed in 2016 and 2018, respectively. Based on the results of this study, it is considered that continuous surveillance of mosquitoes should be performed for controlling mosquito populations and mediating diseases spread by this vector.
The ability of sunflower, bean, green perilla, and sesame to attract Metcalfa pruinosa was tested in both laboratory and field conditions. In the laboratory experiment, sunflowers showed the highest attractiveness to M. pruinosa nymphs and adults. These results were the same as those in the field experiment. Sunflowers showed the highest attractiveness among the four candidates as a trap plant for M. pruinosa, with comparable average attractiveness values for nymphs and adults to those in the laboratory. Young beans also showed high attractiveness to M. pruinosa, albeit lower than those of sunflowers. However, the attractiveness of mature beans was low. Sunflowers consistently (P < 0.05) showed significantly higher attractiveness than that of the other three plants, regardless of plant age. Thus, sunflowers would serve as a good trap plant for both the nymphs and adults of M. pruinosa.
We investigated the control of Bemisia tabaci adults in tomato greenhouses using the eggplant as a trap plant with 4 systemic chemicals. The control effect of dinotefuran SG 50% on tobacco whitefly adults was 80% mortality, the highest than that cyantraniliprole, pyridaben and clothianidin, 51.0%, 12.4% and 11.0% respectively when all chemicals with recommended doses were used. Dinotefuran was applied at various doses and was observed to be most effective above 200ppm (88.4%)t. The control effect of dinotefuran lasted for appromimately nine 9 days and the density of tobacco whitefly adults increased there after. In field tests, the densities of tobacco whitefly adults on tomato shoots were highest at points 0, 15 and 20 m from the eggplant traps and lowest at 5 and 10 m. When the density of tobacco whitefly was low and the eggplants with dinotefuran SG 50% were placed in the tomato greenhouse at 10 m intervals, the overall density of tobacco whitefly adults was lower. In addition, densities were higher at the side of the greenhouse than in the interior and further away from the eggplant. When the density of tobacco whitefly was high and the eggplants with dinotefuran were placed at 5 m intervals, the density of tobacco whitefly at each 5 m point decreased. Theses results confirm that the eggplant is an effective trap plant for attracting tobacco whitefly audlts and combined with dinotefuran SG 50% decreases the density of tobacco whitefly in tomato greenhouses.
This study was performed to ascertain the potential of egg plant for use as a trap plant to attract Bemisia tabaci adults compared to that of tomato. Choice tests were conducted to compare the preference of B. tabaci adults to horseweed, egg-plant, cucumber, and tomato. B. tabaci adults were found to be more sensitive to visual cues than to odor cues, and they preferred the egg-plant and cucumber to horseweed. The attraction rates of the egg-plant and cucumber to B. tabaci adults were 82.3% and 82.5% respectively, compared to that of tomato. Because egg-plants are easier to manage compared to cucumber, we excluded cucumber from subsequent experiment. The attraction rate of egg-plant to B. tabaci adults was >90% when the height of egg-plant was equal or more than that of the tomato plant.
Mass trapping of the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, has been considered as an option to control this pest. This study applied the commercial lures to the hot pepper-cultivating greenhouses and assessed the enhancement of the attracting efficiency by adding to sticky traps. There was no color difference in the attracting efficiency between blue and yellow sticky traps. However, the installation position of the traps was crucial in the greenhouses. The more thrips were captured within host cropping area than outside areas of the crop. In vertical trap position, it was the most optimal to install the traps at the crop crown. Using these installation parameters, the yellow sticky traps captured approximately 1% population of the thrips. To enhance the trapping efficiency, the commercial lures containing aggregation pheromone or 4-methoxybenzaldehyde were added to the yellow sticky traps. However, these commercial lures did not significantly enhance the trapping efficiency compared to the yellow sticky trap alone. In contrast, Y-tube olfactometry assays confirmed the high efficiency of the aggregation pheromone or another plant volatile (methyl isonicotinate) to attract the thrips. Interestingly, these lure components had lower attracting efficiencies compared to the hot pepper flowers. The high attractive efficiency of the flowers was supported by the observation that the commercial lure was effective to enhance the trapping efficiency of the yellow sticky trap against F. occidentalis in Welsh onion (Allium fistulosum) field without any flowers. This study indicates the limitation of the commercial lures in application to hot pepper fields for the mass trapping of F. occidentalis. It also suggests active volatile component(s) from hot pepper flowers to attract F. occidentalis.
Striped flea beetle, Phyllotreta striolata (SFB) and turnip sawfly, Athalia rosae ruficornis (TSF) are two economically important sporadic pests in radish fields on Jeju island. The response of adult SFB and TSF to a mixture of aggregation pheromone, (+)-(6R,7S)-himachala-9,11-diene and host plant volatile, allyl isothiocyanate (HAI), as well as to yellow and blue sticky traps was examined in radish fields. Adult SFB was more attracted to the sticky trap with HAI, regardless of the color of the sticky trap; however, adult TSF was more attracted on the yellow sticky trap than blue, and no effect of HAI was observed. The adult SFB and TSF can be effectively monitored using yellow sticky traps placed 10 cm above the plant canopy. SFB and TSF had 3 and 5 peak times in a year, respectively. The first peak occurred in the middle of March for SFB and mid-late of April for TSF. We expect that the results of the present study can facilitate minimizing the damage caused by the two important pests in commercial radish fields.

The problem of increased resistance to pesticides is caused by the management of Bemisia tabaci, which depends almost entirely on pesticides, and to solve this problem, we investigated the host preference of B. tabaci among herbal plants to develop a possible attractant for alternative control methods. Experiments were conducted in greenhouse tomatoes at the National Institute of Horticultural Science and Herbal Science in Wanju-gun. Major herbal plants such as lemon balm, chocolate mint, rose geranium, and apple geranium were installed 50cm from the ground and 30cm from the top of the tomatoes, then the density of B. tabaci was investigated. As a result of examining the density of B. tabaci by the location of the herbal plants, it was found that the lemon balm location showed the highest B. tabaci density while rose geranium and apple geranium were rather avoided. These results are expected to be helpful in the development of alternative B. tabaci control methods using herbal plants including attractants, repellents, and trap plants.
An outbreak of the onion thrips, Thrips tabaci, was observed in welsh onion cultured in greenhouse during winter season (Jan ~ Feb). The thrips was identified using DNA barcode. Weekly occurrence was around 240 ~ 700 adults per trap. Trap color gave significant influence on the capture efficiency with a preference on yellow compared to blue sticky trap. Subsequently, most (> 90%) onions exhibited a damage symptom induced by the thrips. This outbreak was observed only in a specific area but not in nearby greenhouses. This discontinuous occurrence pattern was further investigated by analyzing flight behavior through in- and out- door tests. About 1.5 mm-body length adults could jump up to about 5 cm and fly up to 2 m in altitude, which was the top of the greenhouse. This suggested their migrating potential to nearby (< 2 m) greenhouses. However, few were detected in the neighboring places probably due to physical hindrance with low temperatures between greenhouses. This is reasoned why the onion thrips forms a patch distribution among greenhouses during winter season.
