  • A boundary sequence can be a good representation of arbitrary shapes, because it can represent them simply and precisely. However, boundary sequences have not been used as a representation of arbitrary shapes, because the pixel-based shape-features such as area, centroid, orientation, projection and so forth, could not be computed directly from them. In this paper, we show that the shape-features can be easily computed from the boundary sequences by introducing the cross-sections that are defined as vertical (or horizontal) line segments in a shape. A cross-section generation method is proposed, which generates cross-sections of the shape efficiently by tracing the boundary sequence of the shape once. Furthermore, a boundary sequence extraction method is also proposed, which generates a boundary sequence for each shape in a binary image automatically The proposed methods work well even if a shape has holes. Eventually, we show that a boundary sequence can be used effectively for representing arbitrary shapes.

  • In this paper, we propose a PSNR(peak-to-peak signal to noise ratio) estimation method exploiting visual rhythm information for the reconstructed video frames at the customer's STB(Set-top Box). Key idea is that we can estimate the PSNR by using VR(visual rhythm) information even though a VR consists of the pixels in a vertical direction of a 2D(2-dimensional) video frame, because VR is the 1D projected version of a 2D video frame approximately. Simulation results show that the estimated PSNR from VR information is closely related to the PSNR from 2D video frames. The advantages of the proposed scheme includes that it can monitor the video quality efficiently while minimizing the computation load of STB, and show the location, duration and occurrence count of severe picture degradation.

  • With the consistent development of the 3D application technique, visuals are available at more realistic quality and are utilized in many applications like game. In particular, interacting with 3D objects in virtual environments, 3D graphics have led to a substantial development in the augmented reality. This study proposes a 3D user interface to control objects in 3D space through virtual two-view method using only one camera. To do so, homography matrix including transformation information between arbitrary two positions of camera is calculated and 3D coordinates are reconstructed by employing the 2D hand coordinates derived from the single camera, homography matrix and projection matrix of camera. This method will result in more accurate and quick 3D information. This approach may be advantageous with respect to the reduced amount of calculation needed for using one camera rather than two and may be effective at the same time for real-time processes while it is economically efficient.

  • Active stereo vision system allows us to localize a target object by passing only the features of small disparities without heavy computation for identifying the target. This simple method, however, is not applicable to the situations where a distracting background is included or the target and other objects are located on the zero disparity area simultaneously To alleviate these problems, we combined filtering with foveation which employs high resolution in the center of the visual field and suppresses the periphery which is usually less interesting. We adopted an image pyramid or log-polar transformation for foveated imaging representation. We also extracted the stereo disparity of the target by using projection to keep the stereo disparity small during tracking. Our experiments show that log-polar transformation is superior to either an image pyramid or traditional method in separating a target from the distracting background and fairly enhances the tracking performance.

  • Quadtree-based terrain visualization methods have been used in a lot of applications. However, because most procedures are performed on the CPU, the rendering speed is slow in comparison to methods using GPU. In this paper, we present a quadtree-based terrain visualization method working on the GPU with specially designed data structure, error-texture and LOD-texture, and block-based acceleration method. In preprocessing step, we calculate errors in world space and store them to error-texture. In rendering step, we examine projected errors of error-texture and choose the detail level, then store the projected errors to LOD-texture. View frustum culling is performed as block unit using the values of error-texture and LOD-texture. This method reduces CPU load and performs time consuming jobs such as LOD selection and view frustum culling.

  • This paper addresses an efficient loop filter algorithm to improve visual quality by simultaneously reducing blocking and ringing artifacts in H.26L video coder. H.26L video coding standard using the different coding mechanism to existing video coding standards has different distribution of blocking and ringing artifacts that is dependent on coding type, quantization step size, and motion vector. Therefore, the information is used to define the filter type and the filter coefficients. and a projection operator is defined to avoid the over-smoothness. In addition, in order to avoid over-smoothing coming from filtering processing, a constraint projection operator is defined. Since the above information is available both in encoder and in the decoder, a loop filter is used, and the algorithm is simplified to reduce the computational cost. Experimental results show the capability of the proposed algorithm.

  • The performance of human detection system is affected by camera location and view angle. In 2D image acquired from such camera settings, humans are displayed in different sizes. Detecting all the humans with diverse sizes poses a difficulty in realizing a real-time system. However, if the size of a human in an image can be predicted, the processing time of human detection would be greatly reduced. In this paper, we propose a method that estimates human size by constructing an indoor scene in 3D space. Since the human has constant size everywhere in 3D space, it is possible to estimate accurate human size in 2D image by projecting 3D human into the image space. Experimental results validate that a human size can be predicted from the proposed method and that machine-learning based detection methods can yield the reduction of the processing time.

  • In this paper, we propose a hardware design for correction of barrel distortion using the nearest coordinates in the corrected image. Because it applies the nearest distance on corrected image rather than adjacent distance on distorted image, the picture quality is improved by the image whole area, solve the staircase phenomenon in the exterior area. But, because of additional arithmetic operation using design of bilinear interpolation, required arithmetic operation is increased. Look up table(LUT) structure is proposed in order to solve this, coordinate rotation digital computer(CORDIC) algorithm is applied. The results of the synthesis using Design compiler, the design of implementing all processes of the interpolation method with the hardware is higher than the previous design about the throughput, In case of the rear camera, the design of using LUT and hardware together can reduce the size than the design of implementing all processes with the hardware.

  • This paper proposes a robust and computationally efficient algorithm for automatic video object segmentation. For implementing the spatio-temporal segmentation, which aims for efficient combination of the motion segmentation and the color segmentation, an SOM-based hierarchical clustering method in which the segmentation process is regarded as clustering of feature vectors is employed. As results, problems of high computational complexity which required for obtaining exact segmentation results in conventional video object segmentation methods, and the performance degradation due to noise are significantly reduced. A measure of motion vector reliability which employs MRF-based MAP estimation scheme has been introduced to minimize the influence from the motion estimation error. In addition, a noise elimination scheme based on the motion reliability histogram and a clustering validity index for automatically identifying the number of objects in the scene have been applied. A cross projection method for effective object tracking and a dynamic memory to maintain temporal coherency have been introduced as well. A set of experiments has been conducted over several video sequences to evaluate the proposed algorithm, and the efficiency in terms of computational complexity, robustness from noise, and higher segmentation accuracy of the proposed algorithm have been proved.
