  • Recently, soil-bentonite mixtures are frequently used as impervious liners for waste disposal sites. In the present work, bentonite composite liner systems have been developed by utilizing Korean zeolitic bentonites. The geomechanical properties of the liner systems, such as strength hydraulic conductivity, etc. have also been studied. The laboratory and field test results showed that uniaxial strengths of the system were improved by addition of bentonite and CaO-based additive to the upper and lower layer of the liner systems, respectively. Hydraulic conductivity values measured on field liner systems showed less $1{\times}10^{-3}cm/s$, which is considered to be minimum regulation requirement for waste disposal sites.

  • During the process of gas hydrate extraction in the deep seabed, fine diatom particle migration occurs, which causes the seabed slope failure and the productivity deterioration of the gas hydrate. Therefore, a study related with the changes of the ground characteristics due to the fine particle migration is required. The objective of this study is to investigate the change of hydraulic properties of sand due to the migration of fine diatom particle in sandy soils. In order to simulate the sediments of the Ulleung basin gas hydrate in the East Sea, fifteen sand-diatom mixtures that have different diatom volume fractions (DVF) are prepared. During the falling head permeability tests, the coefficients of permeability are measured according to the DVF. In addition, for the simulation of the fine diatom particle migration, constant head permeability tests are conducted by applying the hydraulic pressures of 3 kPa, 6kPa, and 9 kPa on a specimen composed of two layers: a specimen with 50% DVF in upper layer and a specimen with 0% DVF in lower layer. Furthermore, the coefficient of permeability and the electrical resistivity of the migration zone are measured during the constant head permeability test. The falling head permeability tests show that the coefficient of permeability decreases as the DVF of the specimen increases. In addition, the gradient of the coefficient of permeability curve decreases in the DVF range of 10%~50% compared with that of 0%~10%, and increases above 50% in DVF. The result of constant head permeability tests shows that the coefficient of permeability decreases and electrical resistivity increases in the migration zone due to the fine diatom particle migration. This study demonstrates that fine diatom particle migration reduces the permeability of the soils and the behavior of the migration zone due to the fine diatom particle migration may be estimated based on the reversal relationship between the coefficient of permeability and the electrical resistivity.

  • In order to find out the influences of the coefficient of permeability and the coefficient of consolidation on the consolidation of nonhomogeneous soils, self-developed program was used. For the purpose of analysis, nonhomogeneous soils of two layers which have various values of coefficient of permeability and coefficient of consolidation were assumed and analyzed by the developed program. According to the results obtained by the analysis, coefficient of consolidation has great effect on the distribution of excess pore water pressure and the consolidation settlement whereas coefficient of permeability has little effect on the characteristics of consolidation of nonhomogeneous soils.

  • A theoretical equation, from which we can get a suitable ratio of bentonite at bentonite-mixed soil, was derived for desigri of the impermeable condition. Bentonite is a soil with great expansion property and it has the permeability lower than $1\times10^{-7}cm/sec$ in spite of its maximum expansion state. Accordingly if the void of soil is filled with the liquid of bentonite, water will flow only through the veid of bentonite liquid. And the permeability of bentonite-mixed soil will always satisfy the condition as impermeable zone. However, because it is very difficult to mix uniformly bentonite with soil, it is thought that the actual mixing ratio fur the impermeable zone will be grater than that by theoretical equation. Permeability tests were performed to check the equation and a modified equation was suggested from the experimental results.

  • This study was conducted to propose a reasonable requirement regulation of cutoff barriers composed of bottom layer and vertical barrier of offshore landfill for the prevention of contaminant leakage. The bottom layer was composed of impermeable clay layer; vertical walls were composed of double walls; outer wall was composed of steel sheet pile which registed against outer force; cutoff vertical barrier took the role of inner wall. Seepage-advection-dispersion numerical analysis was conducted using SEEP/W and CTRAN/W programs under steady and unsteady flows. The results showed that the values calculated under steady flow showed higher migration of pollutant than those of unsteady flow. The values calculated under steady flow are more valid from a design point of view. Under steady flow and the bottom clay layer and when the vertical barrier are homogeneous and completely well installed, respectively, the minimum required cutoff regulations for hydraulic conductivity, thickness, and embedded depth of the bottom clay layer and vertical barrier were suggested.

  • Conventional designs of landfill covers use geosynthetics such as geomembrane and GCL, and clay liners to lower the permeability of final covers of landfill sites. However, differential settlement and the variation of temperature or humidity in landfill sites cause the development of cracks or structural damage inside the final cover. This study examined the application of a Self Recovering Sustainable Liner (SRSL) as an alternative landfill final cover material. SRSL consists of double layers, which have chemicals, can generate precipitates filling the pores of the layers by chemical reaction. The interface material forms an impermeable layer and in case of internal cracks, the reactants of the two layers migrate towards the crack and heal it by forming another liner. In this study the applicability of SRSL material for landfill final cover was examined by performing flexible wall permeameter tests to prove that the hydraulic conductivity is lower than the regulations and unconfined compression tests to judge whether the strength satisfies the restriction for the landfill final cover. Furthermore, the environmental impacts on the permeability and strength were evaluated. The experimental results show that the SRSL has lower hydraulic conductivity and higher strength than the regulations and is little influenced by climatic changes such as wet/dry or freeze/thaw process.

  • Recently, domestic waste landfills are constructed sometimes on seashore area to provide large landfill area. In order to strengthen the foundation of landfills and to prevent the infiltration of leachate through the bottom, many cases of constructing cement hardened liners on seashore clays are found. In these cases, it is possible to have cracks in the hardened liners due to settlement with waste load since the stiffness of the hardened liner Is greater than that of clay liners. In this study, the capability of Self-Sealing and Self-Healing (SSSH) liner made with a seashore clay in the metropolitan landfill to prevent the percolation of water and leachate is examined using flexible-wall permeameter test and using uniaxial compression test. Applicability of SSSH to weathered granitic soil is also examined for self-sealing capabilities. The result of Flexible permeameter test for SSSH with the seashore clay showed that permeability obtained was lower than permeability criteria of Korean waste management law. The permeability and strength characteristics of SSSH with granitic soil and bentonite showed better results than with the seashore clay.

  • This paper presents the results of investigation into bearing capacity of a geocell reinforced load base. In order to analyze variation of bearing capacity of the geocell reinforced road base comparing to without reinforced geocell road base, a series of full-scale tests were performed and measured using FWD (Falling Weight Deflectometer). The results indicate that bearing capacity of geocell (T=1.5 mm) reinforecd road base increase than the unreinforced road base.

  • A bentonite mixing with local soil widely used as liner layer for landfill should have low permeability less than $1{\times}10^{-7}cm/s$. But there are several limitations of bentonite used as liner layer, such as drying shrinkage cracking, ineffective waterproof ability under salt water condition like flocculation under sea water. The purpose of this research is the development of a salt resistance bentonite by mixing sepiolite and guar gum to overcome the weak points of bentonite to get high water resistance capacity and permeability coefficient below $1{\times}10^{-7}cm/s$ under salt water condition. After having performed drying shrinkage cracking test, swelling index test, compaction test, and hydraulic conductivity test we confirmed the optimal mixing ratio of materials and evaluated the performance of materials.
