A laboratory microcosm experiment was conducted to evaluate a major metal uptake route as well as chronic toxic effects of the clam, Macoma balthica exposed to Ag and Cu contaminated sediments. Twenty five clams were exposed to the sediments contaminated with four levels of Ag $Ag(0.01-0.87\mu{mol}\;g^{-1})$ and $Cu(0.75-5.55\mu{mol\;g^{-1})$ for 90 days. AVS (acid volatile sulfide) concentration in the sediments, considered as major factor controlling metal geochemistry and bioavailability, was manipulated to evaluate its effects on Ag and Cu bioaccumulation in M. balthica. Following 90-d exposure, the tissue Ag and Cu in M. balthica increased linearly with the Ag and Cu concentrations in sediments extracted with 1 N HCI (SEM, simultaneously extracted metals with AVS). The bioaccumulation of Ag and Cu in M. balthica was little influenced by difference in [SEM] - [AVS] values, suggesting a minor contribution of pore water metals to bioaccumulation. Tissue Ag and Cu concentrations directly influenced on the clearance rate and glycogen content of the clams. The clams with highest tissue Ag $(1.0\pm{0.2}\mu{mol}\;g^{-1})$ and Cu concentrations $(2.7\pm{0.3}\;\mu{mol}\;g^{-1})$ had only 18-43% of clearance of the clams exposed to uncontaminated sediments. Similarly, glycogen content of the exposed clams had a inverse relationship with tissue Ag and Cu concentrations. These results suggest that M. balthica exposed to Ag and Cu contaminated sediments accumulates metals largely by ingestion of contaminated sediments and can display chronic effects as reduced clearance rate and glycogen content.
When settled sediments in natural condition for long time were dredged by dredging process, it is natural that bulking change between sediments and dredged soils is affected by chemical injection; coagulant. Dredged sediments used in this study were sampled in the lagoon "Young rang lake" located at the east coast Sokcho city and the bulking change of dredged soils is quantitatively analysed by changing of the clay content and the amount of the flocculant and coagulant. From the experimental results, the bulking of dredged soils increased 1.69 times on the average bulking of settled sediments in natural condition in the case of the optimum chemicals addition.

We studied the release characteristics of the marine sediment which could facilitate sea eutrophication through some lab-scale simulation experiments. Environmental indicators such as pH, ORP(oxidation reduction potential), nitrogens, and phosphates were measured in order to calculate the corresponding release rates. $CaO_2$, an oxygen releasing compound was used to determine how it would effect on the natural process of sedimental release. COD, ammonia nitrogen, phosphorous compounds were less released under the oxic environment caused by $CaO_2$. This basic data will help developing methodology for reducing marine eutrophication which may be initiated by the sedimental release.
Morphology, surface sediments, sedimentation rates and sea-cliff erosion have been monitored, for one year to investigate the shoreline changes and tidal beach characteristics in Cheonsu Bay along the west coast of Korea. The seacliff of the bay consists of intensively weathered sedimentary rocks and soft soil, showing an erosion range of $-58.9\~73.3cm/yr$ by a weak wave forcing. Active sea-cliff erosions are recognized by peculiar geomorphic features, including saw teeth-shaped coastline, gravels, relict weathered basement-rock and 'Island Stack' exposed on the high-tide beach surface. The beach sediments show low compositional maturity at the south and north headlands and gradually high towards the central part. This observation seems to be caused by the fact that beach sediments are to originate from the both headlands in the study area and then transported by long-shore current associated with a wave action.
Suspended sediment budget in Gwangyang Bay was investigated using the data of suspended sediment concentration and vertical distribution of tidal currents at the mouth of the bay in the Yeosu Sound (Yeosu Haeman) . At the mouth of the bay suspended sediment concentration shows much higher value of approximately 17.80mg/l on the average near the bottom than the concentration near the surface where the average is 4.7mg/l. Tidal currents also show an asymmetry in magnitude between flood and ebb. Near the surface ebb is stronger than flood, while flood is stronger than ebb near the bottom. Due to the higher concentration and stronger flood current near the bottom, transport of suspended sediment near the bottom plays a major role to the sediment budget in the bay, and the bay is in net-depositional environment. The western part of the bay seems to gain the suspended sediment of approximately $5.66\times10^8g/day$, which corresponds to a sedimentation rate of about 1.15m/1,000years.
The sound velocity (compressional wave) and attenuation coefficient in the marine surface sediments in the nearshore areas off the Pohang, Pusan, Yeosu and Kunsan were investigated in terms of the geotechnical properties of the marine surface sediments in the water depth range of 10-50 meters. The marine surface sediments in the study areas are variable, that is, sand to clay. Due to the various four different study area, the sound velocities and attenuation coefficients in the surface sediment facies vary 1,44m/sec to 1,510m/sec in velocity and 0.82dB/m to 3.70dB/m in coefficient respectively. In fact, the sound velocity increases with increasing of density and mean grain sizes of the sediments, and however, with decreasing of porosith. The correlation equations between the sound velocith and geotechnical properties of mean grain size, density, and porosity were expressed as the following: Vp=1512.28406-9.16083(Mz)+0.20795(Mz)$\^$2/, Vp=1876.15527-597.50397(d)+210.48375(d)$\^$2/, Vp=1559.47217-2.09266(n)$\^$2/. where Vp is sound velocity, Mz is mean grain size, d is density, and m is porosity, respectively. However, the relationship between the attenuation and geotechnical properties were different from that of sound velocity and geotchnical properties. Furthermore, the correlation equations between attenuation coefficient and geotechnical properties were expressed as the following: a=1.85217+0.67197(Mz)-0.09035 (Mz)$\^$2/, a=48.87859+58.21721(d)-16.3.143(d)$\^$2/, a=2.06765+0.07215(n)-0.00111(n)$\^$2/, where a is attenuation coefficient. The high attenuation appeared in the silty sand through fine sand facies in sediment and k values in these facies were in the range of 0.86 to 0.89 dB/m/KHz.
In the present study, experiments have been performed to investigate the effects of the type of adsorbent, pH, and ionic strength on the adsorption of nutrients (nitrate and phosphate in artificial solution) onto the dredged sediment from a coastal fishery. In addition, this study aims to evaluate the possibility of removing the nutrients from the water using the dredged sediment. In the adsorption experiments of the nutrients, the reactions were completed within 10 minutes using ${NO_3}^-$-N($100{\mu}M$, 10mM) and ${PO_4}^{3-}$-P($100{\mu}M$, 10mM). In the steady state, 61% and 77% of the initial amounts were removed respectively for $100{\mu}M$${NO_3}^-$-N and $100{\mu}M$${PO_4}^{3-}$-P. The thermal treatment of the dredged sediment at $900^{\circ}C$ was not helpful to increase the removal efficiencies of the nutrients. Additives such as CaO and MgO dropped the removal efficiency of ${NO_3}^-$ to 0%, but increased that of ${PO_4}^{3-}$ up to 98%. Adsorption isotherms of ${NO_3}^-$ and ${PO_4}^{3-}$ could be explained by the Freundlich equation ($R^2$>0.99). The adsorption reaction was little influenced by the pH and ionic strength. Based on the results showing short reaction time and considerably high removal efficiencies of the nutrients, it is proposed to apply the dredged sediment from a coastal fishery to removing nutrients such as nitrate and phosphate in the water.
A sand shoal (1300 m long and 400 m wide) with an orientation of north-south is formed on the lower tidal flat of Gomso Bay, southwestern coast of Korea. Surface bedforms, sedimentary structures, sedimentation rate, grain size distribution and can-corer sediments have been measured and analysed along the sand shoal proper zone B and its offshore zone A and onshore zone C during the period of 14 months. These three zones can be differentiated based on sedimentological characteristics: A zone - fine sand (3${\varphi}$ mean), linguoid-type ripples, 70 mm/month in sedimentation rate and no bioturbation, B zone - medium sand (2.5${\varphi}$ mean), dunes (4${\sim}$5 m in wavelength), 30 mm/month in sedimentation rate and no bioturbation, and C zone - coarse silt (5${\varphi}$ mean), sinuous-type ripples, 10 mm/month in sedimentation rate and well-developed bioturbation. These characteristics indicate that the zone C represents a relatively low-energy regime environment whereas the zone A corresponds to a relatively high-energy environment. The zone B would play an important role for a barrier to dissipate the approaching wave energy, resulting in maintaining of low-energy conditions in the inner part of Gomso-Bay intertidal flat behind.
The survival rate and tube number of Monocorophium uenoi, one of the dominant species in Lake Sihwa, was investigated under laboratory condition with salinity gradients (1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40‰). Another laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the survival rate of Monocorophium uenoi in sulphide-rich sediment with oxic overlying water, and the effect of amphipod bioturbation on sulphide and oxygen profiles. The survival rate and tube-forming number of the amphipod were high in salinity range of 20 to 30‰. The amphipod survival rate was also high in sulphidic sediment when the water column was oxic. The amphipod bioturbation affected the oxygen and sulphide content in the sediment; oxygen conditions in the upper sediment layers were improved, and simultaneously the concentrations of sulphide were reduced. And their depth was clearly dependent on amphipod density. In Lake Sihwa, previously anoxic bottoms with sulphidic sediment during summer turn oxic with pycnocline disappearance during autumn. Amphipods seem to have the capability to quickly invade such areas, and their tubing of the sediment may play an important role in preparing the sediment for further recolonisation of other macrobenthos.

A gravity core (RS14-C2) was collected at site RS14-C2 in the continental slope to the east of Pennell-Isellin Bank of the Ross Sea (Antarctica) during PNRA XXIX (Rosslope II Project) Expedition. In order to trace the sediment source, magnetic susceptibility (MS), sand fraction, and clay mineral compositions were analyzed, and AMS $^{14}C$ ages were dated. Core sediments consist mostly of hemipelagic sandy clay or silty clay including ice-rafted debris (IRD). AMS $^{14}C$ age of core-top indicates the modern and Holocene sediments. Based on AMS $^{14}C$ dating, sediment color, MS and sand fraction, core sediments are divided into interglacial and glacial intervals. The interglacial brown sediments are characterized by low MS and sand fraction, whereas the glacial gray sediments are characterized by high MS and sand fraction. Among clay mineral compositions of core sediments, illite is highest (61.8~76.7%), and chlorite (15.7~21.3%), kaolinite (3.6~15.4%), and smectite (0.9~5.1%) are in decreasing order, and these compositions are also divided into the interglacial and glacial/deglacial intervals. During the glacial period, the high content of illite and chlorite indicate sediment supply from the bedrocks of Transantarctic Mountains under the Ross Ice Sheet. In contrast, because of decreasing supply of illite and chlorite by the glacial retreat, smectite and kaolinite contents increased relatively during the interglacial period. During the interglacial period, smectite may be transported additionally by the northeastward flowing surface current from the coast of Victoria Land in the western Ross Sea. Kaolinite may be also supplied to the continental slope by the Antarctic Slope Current from the kaolin-rich metasedimentary rock outcropped on the Edward VII Peninsula.
