This paper introduces Geostationary Ocean Color Imager, IMage Pre-processing Subsystem (GOCI IMPS) of Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite (COMS), and describes its functions, development states, and operational concepts. The primary and backup systems of GOCI IMPS have been installed in Korea Ocean Satellite Center (KOSC) and Satellite Operation Center (SOC) and the system are the prelaunch test phase after completing all required tests. It is expected that the GOCI data observed continuously over the Korea Peninsular in the geostationary orbit will be usefully utilized in marine environment research fields such as sea surface temperature changes or marine ecosystems.

COMS satellite is a multipurpose satellite in the geostationary orbit, which accommodates multiple payloads of the Ka band Satellite Communication Payload, Meteorological Imager, and Geostationary Ocean Color Imager into a single spacecraft platform. In this paper, Korea's first innovative geostationary Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) program is introduced which is fully funded by Korean Government. The satellite platform is based on the Astrium EUROSTAR 3000 communication satellite, but creatively combined with MARS Express satellite platform to accommodate three different payloads efficiently for COMS. The goals of the Ka band satellite communication mission are to in-orbit verify the performances of advanced communication technologies and to experiment wide-band multi-media communication service. The Meteorological Imager mission is to continuously extract meteorological products with high resolution and multi-spectral imager, to detect special weather such as storm, flood, yellow sand, and to extract data on long-term change of sea surface temperature and cloud. The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager mission aims at monitoring of marine environments around Korean peninsula, production of fishery information (Chlorophyll, etc.), and monitoring of long-term/short-term change of marine ecosystem. The system design difficulties are in the different kinds of payload mission requirements of communication and remote sensing purposes and how to combine them into one to meet the overall satellite requirements. In this paper, Ka band communication payload system is more highlighted.
We developed a software for simulations and analyses of the Image Navigation and Registration (INR) system, and compares the characteristics of Image Motion Compensation (IMC) algorithms for the INR system. According to the orbit errors and attitude errors, the capabilities of the image distortions are analyzed. The distortions of images can be compensated by GOES IMC algorithm and Modified IMC (MIMC) algorithm. The capabilities of each IMC algorithm are confirmed based on compensated images. The MIMC yields better results than GOES IMC although both the algorithms well compensate distorted images. The results of this research can be used as valuable asset to design of INR system for the Communication, Ocean, Meteorological Satellite (COMS).

The design parameters of transmitter and receiver channel systems for COMS, which provides meteorological and ocean data services, were analyzed and the channel design parameters for a proper design of a small user-terminal were proposed in this paper. The COMS transmits the oceanic observation data by using the S/L-band link to the earth station. The meteorological data also are transmitted to the earth station, the meteorological data services, which are processed in the earth station, are provided to user. The sensor data are transmitted as digital signal type and are received by bilateral small-sized user terminals. So the optimal channel system for transmission and reception of sensor data should be designed on the basis of the channel modeling and analyzed results for primary technologies.

The COMS (Communication Ocean Meteorological Satellite) is a hybrid geostationary satellite including communication, ocean, and meteorological payloads. The COMS includes the MODCS (Meteorological and Ocean Data Communication Subsystem) which provides transmitting the raw data collected by meteorological payload called MI (Meteorological Imager) and ocean payload named GOCI (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) to the ground station, and relaying the meteorological data processed on the ground to the end-user stations. Here, for the L-band transmit antenna transmitting SD (Sensor Data) signal and the processed signal, from the system point of view, it is required to estimate the combined antenna gain when the L-band transmit is placed with MI and GOCI payloads on the earth panel of COMS. First of all, the L-band transmit horn is designed and analyzed for the requirements given, and then after placing it on the earth panel, the combined gain analysis is performed using three different analysis methods. It's shown that the obtained gain patterns are very similar among three different analysis methods. Finally the antenna gain degradation of less than 0.5 dB is estimated.
In this paper, requirements of Meteorological Administration about Meteorological Image. (MI) of Communications, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) is analyzed for the design of COMS ground station and according to the analysis results, the distribution image size of each observation area suitable for satellite Field Of View (FOV) stated at the requirements of meteorological administration is determined and the precise satellite FOV and the size of distribution image is calculated on the basis of the image size of the determined observation area. The results in this paper were applied to the detailed design for COMS ground station and also are expected to be used for the future observation scheduling and the scheduling of distribution of user data.

The Communication Ocean and Meteorological Satellite(COMS), the first geostationary observation satellite, was successfully launched on June 27th in 2010. The raw data of Meteorological Imager(MI) and Geostationary Ocean Color Imager(GOCI), the main payloads of COMS, is delivered to end-users through the on-ground processing. The COMS Image Data Acquisition and Control System(IDACS) developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) in domestic technologies performs radiometric and geometric corrections to raw data and disseminates pre-processed image data and additional data to end-users through the satellite. Currently the IDACS is in the nominal operations phase after successful in-orbit testing and operates in National Meteorological Satellite Center, Korea Ocean Satellite Center, and Satellite Operations Center, During the in-orbit test period, validations on functionalities and performance IDACS were divided into 1) image data acquisition and transmission, 2) preprocessing of MI and GOCI raw data, and 3) end-user dissemination. This paper presents that IDACS' operational validation results performed during the in-orbit test period after COMS' launch.

COMS(Chollian) satellite which was launched on June 26, 2010 has three payloads for Ka-band communications, geostationary ocean color imaging and meteorological imaging. In order to make efficient use of the geostationary satellite, a concept of mission operations has been considered from the beginning of the satellite ground control system development. COMS satellite mission operations are classified by daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal operations. Daily satellite operations include mission planning, command planning and transmission, telemetry processing and analysis, ranging and orbit determination, ephemeris and event prediction, and wheel off-loading set point parameter calculation. As a weekly operation, North-South station keeping maneuver and East-West station keeping maneuver should be performed on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively. Spacecraft oscillator updating parameter should be calculated and uploaded once a month. Eclipse operations should be performed during a vernal equinox and autumnal equinox season. In this paper, operational validations of the major functions in COMS SGCS are presented for the first three month of in-orbit test operations. All of the major functions have been successfully verified and the COMS SGCS will be used for the mission operations of the COMS satellite for 7 years of mission life time and even more.
