  • A butterfly valve is a type of flow-control device typically used to regulate a fluid flow. This paper presents an estimation of the shape parameter of the Weibull distribution, characteristic life, and $B_{10}$ life for a concentric butterfly valve based on a statistical analysis of the reliability test data taken before and after the valve improvement. The difference in the shape and scale parameters between the existing and improved valves is reviewed using a statistical hypothesis test. The test results indicate that the shape parameter of the improved valve is similar to that of the existing valve, and that the scale parameter of the improved valve is found to have increased. These analysis results are particularly useful for a reliability qualification test and the determination of the service life cycles.

  • Nonparametric statistical inference for the parameter of logit model were examined. Usually nonparametric approach is milder than parametric approach based on normal theory assumption. We compared the two nonparametric methods for legit model, the bootstrap and random permutation in the sense of coverage probability. Monte Carlo simulation is conducted for small sample cases. Empirical power of hypothesis test and coverage probability for confidence interval estimation were presented for simple and multiple legit model respectively. An example were also introduced.

  • As standard unit root tests are empirically proved to fail to reject the null hypothesis of a unit root for many economic and business time series, it is doubtful that most of those series are informative about the existence of a unit root or that those tests are powerful against relevant alternative hypotheses. This study attempts to perform tests of the null hypothesis of stationarity as well as tests of the null hypothesis of a unit root using the time series data of housing prices in the major metropolitan areas. The results of the additional analyses such as lead-lag, cross-correlation and impulse response for testing the statistical interrelationships between the prices are generally found to be consistent.

  • In this paper we detect edges using stutistical methods of the change-point problem. For this, we perform the hypothesis testing for differences in gray levels to see whether any $n\timesn$ subimage contains edge segments. The proposed method based on the twosample Kolmogorov-Smirnov test is introduced and the likelihood ratio test and the \VolfeSchechtman test for change-point problem arc also applied for edge detection. \Ve perform the experimental study to assess the performance of these methods in both noisy and uncontaminated sample noises.

  • Seoul/Kyungki-born workers have higher wages than other regions-born workers. In order to determine whether this difference is due to taste or statistical discrimination, an econometric model is suggested and a test is done with it. According to the test, the hypothesis that the difference is wholly due to taste discrimination is rejected: a part of the difference is due to statistical discrimination. Since statistical discrimination in this paper comes out in the process of a worker's wage being determined according to his productivity, it is no problem for the government to intervene in.

  • Inspired by the social behavior models of a bird flock or fish school, particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a popular metaheuristic optimization algorithm and has been widely used from solving a complex optimization problem to learning a artificial neural network. However, PSO is difficult to apply to many real-life optimization problems involving stochastic noise, since it is originated in a deterministic environment. To resolve this problem, this paper incorporates a resampling method called the uncertainty evaluation (UE) method into PSO. The UE method allows the particles to converge on the accurate optimal solution quickly in a noisy environment by selecting the particles' global best position correctly, one of the significant factors in the performance of PSO. The results of comparative experiments on several benchmark problems demonstrated the improved performance of the propose algorithm compared to the existing studies. In addition, the results of the case study emphasize the necessity of this work. The proposed algorithm is expected to be effectively applied to optimize complex systems through digital twins in the fourth industrial revolution.

  • When the regression function is discontinuous at a point, the variance function is usually discontinuous at the point. In this case, we had better propose a test for the existence of a discontinuity point with the regression function rather than the variance function. In this paper we consider that the variance function only has a discontinuity point. We propose a nonparametric test for the existence of a discontinuity point with the second moment function since the variance function and the second moment function have the same location and jump size of the discontinuity point. The proposed method is based on the asymptotic distribution of the estimated jump size.
