The purpose of this article is to discuss about both historical progress and current situation of user instruction in Korean academic libraries. Emphasis was on identifying and analyzing the special features and limitations of user instruction from the viewpoints of library users as well as those of librarians. To the end, data were collected from three methods: the first tool was such major statistical sources as 'KERIS university library statistics system' and 'Research Reports' by the Korean Private University Library Association. The second was from the results of surveys and interviews with librarians from 20 university libraries. And the third was from the results of surveys with library users in two sample university libraries.

21세기 정보화, 기술, 국제화 등 시대적 성격에서 볼 때 국가적 차원의 통계적 소양 교육은 일반 시민의 기본 소양 및 인적자원 개발의 문제임을 인식하고 국가 그리고 대학의 일반 교육 정책으로 다를 필요가 있다. 현재 대학 교육에서 소외되고 사각지대에 있는 기초통계학 교육을 사회 변화와 요구를 반영할 수 있는 교육이 시급한 과제이다. 본 논문은 대학 기초통계학의 현재의 대학교육 상황, 학생들의 교육적 배경, 통계적 소양과 시대적 의미, 기초통계학의 목표, 성격 그리고 방향들을 제시하였다.

현실적 수학교육은 탐구학습, 열린학습 등을 통해 수학적 사고력, 문제해결력을 신장하려는 최근의 수학교육의 방향에 걸맞는 새로운 교수${\cdot}$학습 방법의 하나로 주목받고 있다. 이에 따라 본 연구에서는 고등학교 확률과 통계 영역에서 현실적 수학교육을 적용하기 위한 문맥을 개발하였다. 이 문맥들은 수학사, 자연 및 사회 현상, 실생활의 상황, 타 교과에서의 활용 상황 등 다양한 분야에서 고등학교 2${\sim}$2학년 수준에 알맞게 개발되었다.

This study is based on the recognition that teacher educators have to focus their attention on developing pre-service teachers' statistical reasoning for statistics education of school mathematics. This paper investigated knowledge on pre-service teachers' statistical reasoning. Statistical Reasoning Assessment (SRA) is performed to find out pre-service teachers' statistical reasoning ability. The research findings are as follows. There was meaningful difference in the statistical area of statistical reasoning ability with significant level of 0.05. This proved that 4 grades pre-service teachers were more improve on statistical reasoning than 2 grades pre-service teachers. Even though most of the pre-service teachers ratiocinated properly on SRA, half of pre-service teachers appreciated that small size of sample is more likely to deviate from the population than the large size of sample. A few pre-service teachers have difficulties in understanding "Correctly interprets probabilities(be able to explain probability by using ratio" and "Understands the importance of large samples(A small sample is more likely to deviate from the population)".

Although there are various form of statistical graphs in the real world, the statistical graphs in elementary mathematics textbooks are very formalized by the pedagogical constraints. In this study, I examine the frames of statistical graphs and their educational importance, and analyze the frames in Korean, Australian, and MiC textbooks. As a result, the frames of statistical graphs in elementary mathematics textbooks (1) draws students' attention to the components of the graphs, (2) plays a supplementary role in students' drawing graphs by hands, and (3) helps to apply school mathematics to statistical problem solving in real life. The frames of statistical graphs in Korean textbooks is the form of tables focusing on (1) and (2), but these of MiC textbooks has various forms focusing on (3). On the other hand, Austalian textbooks introduced the table-form frames of statistical graphs at the lower graders, but gradually changed to the axis-form frames as the grade level increased. Based on this, a recommendation was drawn on how to deal with the frames of statistical graphs in elementary mathematics textbooks.

The alternative perspective on statistical literacy which considers statistical literacy as an all-encompassing goal of statistics education has been emphasized these days. From this perspective and the diversity of statistical literacy, the key issues related to each step of statistical problem solving can be regarded as components of statistical literacy. This study aims at investigating the key issues and pre-service elementary school teachers' knowledge of them. Based on previous literatures, a framework that indicated the issues related to each step of statistical problem solving was developed. In addition, based on 26 pre-service elementary school teachers' critical analysis of statistics posters, their understanding of each issue was investigated.
