  • Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) has a characteristic that the inductance changes very nonlinearly depending on the magnitude of the current and the relative position of the rotor and stator, and the torque is generated In consideration of these problems, many studies have been conducted on a topology for driving that can improve efficiency and performance in an existing asymmetric bridge converter in order to simplify the circuit and economic efficiency. Therefore, in this paper, we want to check the performance by comparing and analyzing each converter used by applying it as a topology for SRM driving. The driving converters applied to the comparison and analysis are Conventional C-dump, Modified C-dump, Energy efficient C-dump, Resonant C-dump converter with C-dump converter type structure and the most widely used asymmetric bridge converter and 6-Switch inverter that used for general motors.

  • Damper springs in a drive-line absorb the impulsive torque generated when a lock-up clutch is connected directly, instead of via a fluid coupling. Design optimization and finite element analysis were performed to improve the shock- and vibration-absorption capacity of the lock-up clutch. For this purpose, a multi-body dynamics model was developed by including the main parts of a vehicle, such as an engine with a clutch, a transmission, drive shafts and wheels, and a whole mass of a vehicle. The spring constants were selected so that resonance of a system could be avoided. Damper springs were optimized on the basis of the spring constants, impulsive torques, compressed angles, spring counts, fatigue constraints, etc. Topology optimization was performed for three plates with the damper springs. The compliance was set up as an objective function, and volume fraction was fixed below 0.3. A new shape for the plates was proposed on the basis of the topology result.

  • The reducer of the mixer is one of the main parts of the processor used for water and wastewater treatment. In this study, an advanced reducer with a drywell structure was developed in order to prevent oil leakage during operation in the field. During the development of the advanced reducer prototype, a mockup, a metal mold, and a cast were made using CAD and a CNC machine. The structural safety of the reducer prototype's lower housing (drywell structure) was checked using the ALGOR commercial FEM analysis code, which yielded a von Mises stress of about 123 N/mm2, which is below the yield stress of 250 N/$mm^2$, and a natural frequency of about 650-700 Hz. In addition, the torque transmission efficiency for the advanced prototype was 95.87%, which is about 8% more than that found in a previous study, 88.45%, and the sound level was below 75 dB. Furthermore, no oil leakage or abnormal sound or vibration occurred. Therefore, an optimally designed advanced reducer prototype has been successfully developed.

  • This paper presents an implementation of high-dynamic performance of position sensorless motion control system of Reluctance Synchronous Motor(RSM) drives for an industrial servo system with direct torque control(DTC). The problems of high-dynamic performance and maximum efficiency RSM drives controlled by DTC are saturation of stator linkage flux and nonlinear inductance characteristics with various load currents. The accurate estimation of the stator flux and torque are obtained using stator flux observer of which a saturated inductance $L_d$ and $L_q$ can be compensated by adapting from measurable the modulus of the stator current and rotor position. To obtain fast torque response and maximum torque/current with varying load current, the reference command flux is ensured by imposing $I_{ds} = I_{qs}$. This control strategy is proposed to achieve fast response and optimal efficiency for RSM drive. In order to prove rightness of the suggested control algorithm, the actual experiment carried out at $\pm$20 and $\pm$1500 rpm. The developed digitally high-performance motion control system shown good response characteristic of control results and high performance features using 1.0kW RSM which has 2.57 Ld/Lq salient ratio.

  • Magnetic gear can transmit torque without any mechanical contact among rotational parts in rotating mechanical systems. Especially, magnetic gear using rare-earth PMs can be used in variety of industry application because of their great power efficiency. Thus, recent trend shows that magnetic gear can be replaced with common mechanical gear. This paper deals with comparison and torque analysis for magnetic gears with parallel and Halbach magnetization according to various design parameters. Using a two dimensional (2D) finite element (FE) analysis, suitable gear ratio is selected. We performed analysis for magnetically connected inner and outer torque with respect to various design parameters including thickness of inner and outer PM, steel pole angle, segments of Halbach array and magnetization pattern of inner and outer PMs. Finally, we can obtain improved design model having parallel and Halbach magnetization with larger torque, compared with an initial design model.

  • In these days, demand for agile spacecraft is gradually increasing, due to the fact that agile spacecraft can improve mission capability. In this paper, an attitude control logic based on reaction wheels that can enhance agility of spacecraft is proposed. Three methods are suggested, and all three or part of them can be integrated to the existing attitude control system. First, a feedforward/feedback controller is introduced, and its pros and cons are provided, compared to the conventional feedback controller. Second, an attitude command generation method that fully utilizes torque/momentum capacities of reaction wheels is proposed. Third, a torque (current) control mode for internal wheel control is introduced. Numerical results verify that the settling time can be significantly reduced by employing the feedforward/feedback control method, especially for large angle maneuver.

  • Wet multi-disk clutch, a power switching device of the ducted fan, was optimized and results were analyzed. The clutch was divided into two types depending on whether a mechanical lock-up was applied or not. It was optimized under each design condition. Transfer torque capacity, friction material surface pressure, friction surface temperature, and drag torque were calculated as factors to optimize the clutch. The volume of separator plate and drag torque were used as the objective function for optimization. In the case of Type 1, which did not include a mechanical lock-up, the clutch could be operated regardless of the pitch angle of the ducted fan. However, the outer diameter of the friction surface was doubled, the volume was increased by 5~7 times, and the drag torque was increased by 7~12 times compared to those of Type 2, which included a mechanical lock-up.

  • Electric motors for electric vehicles differ in efficiency characteristics depending on the operation modes, studies for evaluating high efficiency characteristics in low speed and high speed operation modes are very important. Therefore, it is necessary to design method that can change the high torque, high output density, and high efficiency characteristics of driving motors for electric vehicles. In this paper, the diameter ratio of stator and rotor for the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor is change of designed 0.62, 0.65, and 0.68, respectively, and the efficiency characteristics of the entire operation section, average efficiency characteristics of the city driving modes and express highway driving modes are analyzed. As a result of analyzing the efficiency characteristics of the entire operating section, it was confirmed that as the diameter ratio increases, the high efficiency section moves to the low speed and low torque section and the high efficiency section moves to the high speed and low torque neighborhood as the diameter ratio decreases. As a result of analyzing the average efficiency characteristics in the city driving modes and express highway driving modes, the average efficiency of 0.68 model is analyzed to be more efficient than the 0.63 and 0.65 model ratio, and it is confirmed that it is suitable for city driving modes and express highway driving modes.

  • This paper aims to improve the critical speed of power-take-off (PTO) shafts by using carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs). The PTO shaft was designed with titanium-CFRPs hybrid structure in order to compensate the low shear strength of CFRPs. Based on the requirements for PTO shafts, the dimensions of PTO shafts were determined through a parametric study. To evaluate the performance of the PTO shaft, a vibration test, a static torsion test, and a torsion durability test were performed. In the vibration test, the critical speed of PTO shafts was 20570 rpm, which was 7.5% higher than that of titanium shafts. Additionally, it was confirmed that the maximum allowable torque of the PTO shaft was 2300 N·m. Finally, under repeated load in the range of 11.3 to 113 N·m, the fatigue failure in the PTO shaft did not occur up to 106 cycles.

  • Orthodontic mini-implants, despite its usefulness as anchorage, have some limits such as loosening. Therefore, various shapes and lengths have been studied. The aim of this study is to analyze the shape and length of mini-implants mechanically. The shapes of mini-implants (1.6 mm, Dual Top, Jeil Medical Co., Seoul, Korea) were cylindrical and taper. The lengths of mini-implants were 6 mm and 8 mm. The tested groups were 5 groups (cylindrical 6 mm, cylindrical 8 mm, taper 6 mm, taper 8 mm and taper 8 mm modified whose thread is reduced from the middle to upper part). All were inserted and removed on the polyurethane foam with the torque measured. During insertion and removal, the taper shape needed higher torque than the cylindrical shape, and the 8 mm length than the 6 mm length (p<0.001). The taper 6mm group showed superior insertion torque (p<0.001) and similar removal torque to the cylindrical 8 mm group. The taper 8 mm modified group with gradually reduced threads, showed continuous high removal torque after the peak. The initial mechanical stability can be provided by the tapered shape and also, affected by length and thread design.
