  • The ionic composition of soil solution is related to a nutrient uptake by plant. Many models for estimating ionic composition of solution have been developed, and most of them have been used for calculating a content of mineral and ionic species in a geochemical point of view. An approximation model considering both cation and anion in soil solution was developed. Variables such as pH, Eh, EC, cations(K, Ca, Mg. Na, Fe, Mn, Al, $NH_4{^+}$), anions(Si, S, P, CY, $NO_3{^-}$, $HCO_3{^-}$ and chemical equilibria of ionic species in soil solution were input into Excel sheet. The activities of soluble ion, ionpairs and complexes of input element were estimated by Newton-Raphson method using conditional equilibrium constant calculated by Davies equation and special models. Equilibrium contents of insoluble minerals and complexes were also calculated.

  • We conducted a short-term incubation experiment in order to understand the effect of the salinity of reclaimed coastal soils on nitrogen mineralization of livestock manure compost (LMC). Two soils with the same soil texture but different EC levels were collected from the same field. These samples were treated with 0%, 1%, 2%, and 3% of LMC by weight basis and incubated at $25^{\circ}C$ to observe changes in inorganic N contents, pH, and dehydrogenase activity with respect to time. As a result, regardless of the soil EC level, as the LMC increased, the total content of the inorganic N ($NH_4{^+}+NO_3{^-}$) increased. Difference in the soil EC level did not affect N mineralization of LMC greatly. The soil EC had negligible effect on the dehydrgenase activity as with the case of inorganic nitrogen. The $NH_4{^+}$ contents remained very low throughout the experimental period starting from the first week of incubation. We believe this is due to the high pH level (pH 7.9 and pH 8.3) of the original soils leading to ammonia volatilization. On the other hand the $NO_3{^-}$ content maintained high level as the LMC treatment level increased and reached maximum at the third week. The pH of the soil during incubation period decreased as the $NO_3{^-}$ contents increased and increased slightly after three weeks. The rise of pH level is believed to be from the $NO_3{^-}$ absorption for immobilization by microbes. In conclusion, the high soil $EC_{1:5}$ level of $12dS\;m^{-1}$ conducted in this experiment did not affect the growth in terms of soil microbes involved in N mineralization of LMC.

  • This study was conducted to determine effects of soil pH and form of nitrogen fertilizers on tomato growth and chemical properties of greenhouse soil using ferigation system. Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Superdoterang) were grown for three months in 18 L pots filled with two soil (pH 6.8 and pH 8.7). 4 different nitrogen fertilizers (urea, ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, and potassium nitrate) were fertigated with different concentrations of 0, 10, 50, and 100 mg N/L during tomato cultivation. Soil pH 8.7 decreased yield and chlorophyll fluorescence compared with soil pH 6.8. Yield at soil pH 8.7 increased by ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate fertigation. Soil pH 6.8 induced increment of yield by nitrogen concentration than form of nitrogen fertilizers. Soil pH after cultivation of tomato decreased by application of ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate. Soil EC by 100 mg N/L application of ammonium sulfate was twice as much as other fertilizers. Form of nitrogen fertilizer had less effect on concentration of soil $NH_4^+$-N and $NO_3^-$-N in soil but the concentrations slightly reduced at pH 8.7. These results indicate that application of urea and ammonium nitrate for a nitrogen source of fertigation has little affects on soil chemical properties before and after tomato cultivation.

  • The contaminated soil at abandoned smelter areas present challenge for remediation, as the degraded materials are typically deficient in nutrients, and rich in toxic heavy metals and metalloids. Bioremediation technique is to isolate new strains of microorganisms and develop successful protocols for reducing metal toxicity with heavy metal tolerant species. The present study collected metal contaminated soil and characterized for pH and EC values, and heavy metal contents. The pH value was 5.80, representing slightly acidic soil, and EC value was 13.47 mS/m. ICP-AES analytical results showed that the collected soil samples were highly contaminated with various heavy metals and metalloids such as lead (183.0 mg/kg), copper (98.6 mg/kg), zinc (91.6 mg/kg), and arsenic (48.1 mg/kg), respectively. In this study, a bacterial strain, Bacillus cereus KM-15, capable of adsorbing the heavy metals was isolated from the contaminated soils by selective enrichment and characterized to apply for the bioremediation. The effects of heavy metal on the growth of the Bacillus cereus KM-15 was determined in liquid cultures. The results showed that 100 mg/L arsenic, lead, and zinc did not affect the growth of KM-15, while the bacterial growth was strongly inhibited by copper at the same concentration. Further, the ability of the bacteria to adsorb heavy metals was evaluated.

  • In this study, we investigated the environmental impact of organic and conventional paddy by monitoring soil properties and water quality. We sampled and analyzed topsoil (0~15 cm), subsoil (15~30 cm), and water of organic and conventional paddy fields in Yongin and Anseong, South Korea. The statistical significance between groups was determined by Duncan's multiple range test. The results show that T-P concentrations in both topsoil and subsoil of Anseong paddy were higher than those of Yongin paddy. The significant difference of T-P between organic and conventional paddy was observed in Anseong but not in Yongin. T-N of organic paddy soil was lower than that of conventional paddy in both Anseong and Yongin region. Water content for subsoil of organic paddy in Anseong was significantly different from others, which is consistent with the results of silt-clay content. pH and EC of water in conventional paddy were higher than those in organic paddy. In Anseong, COD, T-P, and $PO_4-P$ concentration of conventional paddy were higher than those of organic paddy. The regression analysis presented that there were no significant relationship between soil properties and water quality data except T-N.

  • Vertical and temporal characteristics of desalinized reclaimed soil were analyzed from reclaimed coastal land on the western coast of Korea. Of the vertical changes during desalting, pH valuse were the lowest at the topsoil without regard to reclaimation time. The content of C1 were designated as the early period (the first 2-4 years) which decreased exponentially and the later period(the last 5-7 years) which was almost constant, from top to down. In temporal changes of the soil attributes, pH values increased for 5 years and decreased at 6 year after reclamation. Chlorine leaches more rapidly than Na does, K and Ca are constant but Mg increases as time elapsed after reclamation. Sometimes the content of Ca and K in the reclaimed soil are of higher concentration than that of the seawater after reclamation. During desallinization as exemplified by decreasing EC of the soil, Cl and Na are rapidly leached, but K, Ca and Mg are somewhat enhanced. The ration of Na/Cl in the soil equals 1 when the EC registers 5 mmho and then increases dramatically as the EC decreases. Rapid leaching of $Cl^{-}$ elicits an increasing pH valus. The electrostatic balance of the soil is achived by replacement of $Cl^{-}$ with $OH^{-}$ until stationary or until a decreasing pH value is reached again.

  • Objective of this experiment was to evaluate efficiency of application of biochar pellet in case of application of soil carbon sequestration technology. The treatments were consisted of control as general agricultural practice method, pellet(100% pig compost), biochar pellets with mixture ratio of pig compost(9:1, 8:2, 6:4, 4:6, 2:8) for comparatives of pH, EC, $NH_4-N$ and $NO_3-N$ concentrations, and yields in the nursery bed applied biochar pellets after lettuce harvesting. The application rates of biochar pellet was 6.6g/pot regardless of their mixed rates based on recommended amount of application (330kg/10a) for lettuce cultivation. pH in the nursery bed applied different biochar pellets after lettuce harvesting was only increased in the treatment plot of pig compost pellet application, but decreased in 4:6 and 2:8 pellet application plots. However, EC was observed to be not significantly different among the treatments. $NH_4-N$ concentration was only increased in the treatment plot of pig compost pellet application, but $NO_3-N$ concentrations were decreased as compared to the control. Yields in the treatments of 9:1, 8:2 and 4:6 biochar pellet application plot were increased from 9.5% to 11.4%. Therefore, this biochar pellet application might be useful for soil carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas mitigation in the agricultural farming practices because it was appeared to be a positive effect on lettuce growth.

  • This pot experiment was conducted to investigate the changes of leaching in percolated water of paddy soil in which rice was cultivated in conditions of 0%, 5%. 30% addition of bituminous and anthracite fly ash respectively in greenhouse. pH in percolated water was higher in non cultivated plot than in cultivated plot. pH of the fly ash treated plot was higher than that of the control plot. pH in the cultivated plot decreased gradually during the cultivation. The contents of $NH_4-N$, $NO_3-N$ and K in percolated water decreased rapidly after mid-July, and was very low in the cultivated plot. Over the cultivation time, P contents in percolated water was very low. $SiO_2$, contents in percolated water decreased rapidly after June. Na contents in percolated water was highest in mid-June and then decreased gradually. In the cultivated plot, Ca contents in percolated water was higher than that in the control plot. During the cultivation, Ca contents in percolated water decreased gradually. But, in later-term of cultivation. Ca contents in percolated water was relatively Mgh. Mg contents in percolated water decreased after mid-July, but decreased continuously till the later-term of cultivation. EC in the percolated water was highest in mid-June. and then decreased gradually. EC of fly ash treated plot was higher than that of the control plot. The soil pH was increased and phosphate content in the soil was accumulated very high by application of fly ashes in paddy field after rice cultivation. Fly ash treatment did not increase the contents of elements in percolated water compared with the control plot. The difference between anthracite and bituminous fly ash was not so clear. Fly ash treatment, inhibited early growth and tillering. But, in later-term of cultivation, the inhibition effects of nonproductive tillering was expected. Fly ash treatment will be good if it was applicated after last year's harvest because leaching would happen over fallowing time. Contents of inorganic elements in percolated water of fly ash treated plot was not so high compared with that in the control plot.

  • The study was initiated to compare seasonal nutrient variations and rice (Oryza sativa L.) productivity in each of leading rice farm with conventionally managed and recommended fertilized of the large-scale environment-friendly agricultural districts in Jangheung, Suncheon, and Okcheon provinces in 2017. Suncheon rice experimental farm plots included a recommended fertilization plot that had been additionally sown hairy vetch in the fall of previous year, while Okcheon rice farm included a recommended fertilization plot applying half amount of the compost in the conventional plot. A Jangheung rice farm only practiced crop-livestock farming system. Soil pH and EC in all experimental plots were suitable levels for rice growth to cultivate. Seasonal soil pH from March to September was the highest for Suncheon rice farm, and seasonal soil EC was the highest for Jangheung rice farm. Seasonal soil T-N increased in all the plots from March to June in particular for Suncheon rice farm, and Jangheung rice farm had the lowest seasonal soil P. Seasonal soil K decreased in all the plots, with the lowest levels observed for Okcheon farm. Seasonal soil NH4+ mostly increased by up to 90 mg/kg in Jangheung rice farm from March to June. Seasonal plant T-N, P and K concentrations were the highest for Jangheung rice farm. Seasonal plant T-N and P concentrations decreased from June to September, but K leveles were fluctuated between 2.0% and 2.5%. Seasonal SPAD value was the lowest in Suncheon conventional plot. Jangheung rice farm plot produced 6,303 kg of rice per ha, which was approximately two times higher than those of Okcheon recommended plot. The seasonal T-N, P and K balance was the highest in Okcheon conventional plot, with the lowest values observed for Suncheon conventional plot. As a result, Suncheon recommended plot showed relatively low levels of seasonal macro-nutrient balance and the highest rice production, which could be the most environmentally friendly farm practiced conducted in this study.
