  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of some soil conditioners, such as polyacrylamide(PAM), polyvinylalcohol(PVA) and Bitumen emulsion, on aggregate formation and stability, wetting angle, sorptivity and penetrability of the soil with different textures : sand, sandy loam, loam and clay loam. A pot experiment was carried out to find out the effect of treatment on the germination and growth of lettuce with three textures : sand, sandy loam and silt loam. Soil aggregates larger than 2mm in untreated soils at dry condition were naught in sand, 45% in sandy loam, 80% in loam and 90% in clay loam. Treatments of soil conditioners tended to increase the occurrence of soil aggregate larger than 2mm, which were 20~25% in sand, 55~75% sandy loam, but not affected greatly aggragate occurence in loam and clay loam. The aggregate instability was decreased by the soil conditioner treatment. The wetting angles of the soils were greatly changed by hydrophobic of Bitumen, but those were changed slightly by PVA and PAM application. The sorptivity and penetrability data indicated that the effects of different materials on these parameters differed depending upon soil texture. Application of PVA and PAM were no effect exceptive in sand. Application of Bitumen revealed that water movement was not showed in all soils. The germination rate, root weight and top plant weight of lettuce were increased in all soils by PAM treatment as compared to untreated soils. Particularly the greater effect was occurred in sand soil than in sandy loam and silt loam. PAM increased greatly the moisture content and air phase of soils.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of soil types and soil properties on wood preservative leaching. Radiata pine (Pinus radiata Don.) sapwood stakes, which had been treated with 2.0%(w/v) CCA, were leached for 12 weeks by a common laboratory method in four different soils and for 14 days by the AWPA standard leaching method in water. The physical and chemical properties of the four soils were determined, and the percent leaching of the individual component of CCA was correlated with the various soil properties. The data show that leaching of preservative chemicals from treated wood exposed to soil is influenced by the type of soil. The preservative leaching was greater when wood was exposed to water than when the wood was in contact with water-saturated soil. The greatest chromium, copper and arsenic leaching from CCA-treated stakes were observed in the sandy loam, loam, and sand, respectively, and the least amount of leaching of CCA components occurred in the silty loam. The leaching of preservative components from treated wood is extremely complex and appears to be influenced differently by the soil properties. The extent of copper leaching from CCA treated wood appears to be related to exchangeable Mg and sum of bases. There is a reasonably good relationship between chromium leaching and exchangeable Mg, and between arsenic leaching and exchangeable K, soil Ni, Mn, Fe, Cr, or Cu content. Since this study was conducted based on laboratory leaching method using small cross-sectional dimensions; thus, data obtained from this experiment should not be used to predict leaching characteristics from commercial-size wood used in real situation. Accordingly, further studies are necessary using outdoor ground-contact leaching.

  • Effect of the microbial product made of Bacillus stearothermophilus DL-3, which was isolated from the soil and identified in this study, and rice bran on microorganisms in soil and growth of lettuce (Red skirt lettuce) and Chinese cabbage (Ga rack new No.1 Chinese cabbage) was investigated. Total numbers of microorganisms in the pot with untreated soil, treated with standard amount of microbial product and treated with double amounts of microbial product for growth of lettuce after 6 weeks were 2.78${\times}$10$^{7}$ CFU/g, 2.72${\times}$10$^{8}$ CFU/g and 3.63${\times}$10$^{8}$ CFU/g. Total numbers of microorganisms in the soil without treatment of microbial product and treated with standard amount of microbial product were 2.06${\times}$10$^{8}$ CFU/g and 5.49${\times}$10$^{8}$ CFU/g. Total numbers of microorganisms in the pot with untreated soil, treated with standard amount of microbial product and treated with double amounts of microbial product for growth of Chinse cabbage after 6 weeks were 1.43${\times}$10$^{7}$ CFU/g, 3.42${\times}$10$^{8}$ CFU/g and 7.22${\times}$10$^{8}$ CFU/g. Total numbers of microorganisms in the soil without treatment of microbial product and treated with standard amount of microbial product were 5.75${\times}$10$^{8}$ CFU/g and 7.96${\times}$10$^{8}$ CFU/g. On basis of leaf length, leaf width, leaf number, wet weight and dry weight, the growth of lettuce and Chinese cabbage on the soil treated with microbial product was faster than that on the untreated soil. The treatment of microbial product in the soil resulted in the increase of useful microorganisms, which seemed to enhance the growth of lettuce and Chinese cabbage.

  • To select of optimum rice species and germanium (Ge) application method for production of functional rice with Ge, the growth characteristics, Ge absorption and grain quality of rice plant were investigated under different rice species (Hopyungbyeo, Junambyeo, Ilmeebyeo and Dongjinbyeo) and Ge application method (soil application and foliar spray). The rice yield by soil application was higher in the order of Hopyungbyeo $\fallingdotseq$ Junambyeo > Ilmeebyeo >> Dongjinbyeo. On the other hand, the rice yield by foliar spray was higher in the order of Junambyeo >> Ilmeebyeo > Dongjinbyeo > Hopyungbyeo. The rice yield by soil application was higher than that by foliar spray regardless of rice species. For soil application, the Ge absorption in various parts of the rice was higher in the other of rice bran > brown rice > polished rice regardless of rice species. The Ge absorption of brown rice in Hopyungbyeo, Ilmeebyeo, Dongjinbyeo and Junambyeo by soil application was 14.5, 8.0, 11.6 and $10.4\;mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. In leaf, stem and root, the Ge absorption by foliar spray was higher than that by soil application, whereas, in rice bran, brown rice and polished rice, the Ge absorption by soil application was higher than that by foliar spray. The optimum rice species and Ge application method were demonstrated to be Hopyungbyeo and soil application, respectively, which provided suitable conditions for production of functional rice with Ge.

  • The present study was carried out to investigate the effect of nitrogen(urea) application on the seasonal change in pH content of Bray No.1-P, organic matter, and exchangeable cations along the grassland soil profile and further to provide the fundamental information for optimizing the rate of fertilizer application to grassland. Soil samples were taken 20cm intervals upto 100cm soil depth in spring(May 26), summer(July 27), and autumn (October 18) of 1990. The obtained results are summerized as follow 1. In spring and summer, soil pH at 0-20cm soil depth of 28kg N/10a treatment was lowered by 0.7 and 1.0 in comparison with those the same soil depth of 0 kg N/10a treatment and the tendency in pH decrease during all season at the soil depth below 20cm was in the order of summer>spring>autumn. 2. Although Bray No.1-P content at the soil depth 0-20cm of 28kg N/10a treatment was lowered by 20ppm compared to 0 kg N/10a treatment in summer, there was no great difference in its content between 0kg N/10a and 28kg N/10a treatment at all soil depth in spring and summer. In autumn, its content at soil depth below 20cm of 28kg N/10a treatment was higher than that of in summer. 3. Organic matter content at 0-20cm soil depth of 0 and 28kg N/10a treatment in autumn was slightly lowered and on the whole there was very little change in it by soil depth and nitrogen application. 4. The calcium content of 0 and 28kg N/10a treatment was also slightly lowered by increase in soil depth and Mg and K contents were below 0.4 and 0.2 me/100g during all seasons, respectively. 5. Positive correlations were shown among the $NH_4-N$ content and pH, organic matter, Ca and Mg of 0 kg N/10a treatment, however, there was negative correlation ($r=-0.534^{*}$) between $NO_3-N$ content and pH of 28kg N/10a treatment in summer.
