This study was conducted to investigate effects on the co-situs application of coated urea complex fertilizer in dry seeded rice in Dukpyong series soil. Number of spikelet established in 15 days after seeding, conventional plot was $120ea\;per\;m^2$. and whole layer placement(WLP), co-situs application 70%(CSA70%) plot and co-situs application 50%(CSA50%) plot were 146, 126 and $120ea\;per\;m^2$, respectively. There was not concentration obstacle in co-situs application plot in spite of closing application between seed and coated urea complex fertilizer. The amount of $NH_4-N$ into soil solution in different growth stage was highest in WLP 70% plot compare to other treatment. N uptaken amount was highest in CSA 70% plot as $94kg\;ha^{-1}$ compare to $90kg\;ha^{-1}$ of WLP 79% plot and $82kg\;ha^{-1}$ of CSA 50% plot. However, N use efficiency of CSA 50% plot was highest among treatments as 48%. Rice yield was highest in CSA 70% plot as 102% compared to conventional plot.
The objective of this study was to find optimum nonionic surfactants for clean up of soils contaminated by hydrocarbon oils. PIT(phase inversion temperature) measurements in ternary systems containing pure hydrocarbons, pure nonionic surfactants, and water were carried out and interfacial tensions were measured as a function of time for n-hexadecane oil drops brought into contact with various mixtures of nonionic surfactant and water. Batch surfactant washing experiments were performed based on the measurement, results of PIT and interfacial tension and the results showed that maximum removal of n-hexadecane occurred at the PIT of the system. For the $C_{12}E_5(C_{12}H_{25}O(CH_2CH_2O)_5H)$ system, maximum n-hexadecane removal of 73.4% occurred at the PIT of $52^{\circ}C$. In contrast, n-hexadecane removal at $25^{\circ}C$ and at $60^{\circ}C$, each corresponding to the conditions of below PIT and above PIT of the system, was found to be 57.1% and 57.0% respectively. The maximum removal of a hydrocarbon at the PIT of a system, where the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties are balanced, was found to be due to the existence of high oil solubilization into a middle-phase microemulsion and ultralow interfacial of the order of $10^{-2}$ to $10^{-3}$ dyne/cm between middle-phase microemulsion and excess oil phase.
This study was conducted to investigate foliar treatment effects of organic agricultural materials for the environmentally-friendly cultivation of grape. The organic materials applied were chitosan, wood vinegar (pyroligneous acid), amino acid solution, and ginkgo leaf extract. All the organic materials were relatively strong acidic ranging lower than pH 4.6. when comparing with other organic materials, amino acid solution contained relatively high contents of selected plant nutrients, such as N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn. As comparison of selected soil properties in the grape cultivating field, soil pH values were lower at the harvest stage than at the first stage of grape growing (before treating the organic materials), and electrical conductivity (EC) and soil organic matter content were higher at the harvest stage in the all plots. The concentrations of available phosphorus increased in most of the plot soils except in control plot (conventional treatment). The concentrations of exchangeable K decreased in the plot treated with ginkgo leaf extract and the control plot. The exchangeable Mg concentrations decreased in soils of all the plots. On the other hand, the concentrations of N and K in the grape leaves were higher with the treatments of chitosan and amino acid solution, P concentrations were higher with the applications of chitosan, wood vinegar and amino acid solution, and Ca and Mg concentrations were higher with chitosan and amino acid solution treatments, respectively, than with others. The yields of grape were higher, $1,581{\sim}1,583kg\;10a^{-1}$, in the control and wood vinegar treatment plots than others. Sugar contents of grape were not different among all the plots.

This study was performed to evaluate the effect of the addition of vegetable oils on Fenton treatment of PAHs-contaminated soil. Fenton reaction can be proceeded in the soils contaminated with PHAs only in the presence of $H_2O_2$ because of Fe content in the soil. In this case, optimum $H_2O_2$ concentration was 3%. When 17.5 mM $FeSO_4$(III) was added with 3% $H_2O_2$, the removal rate was increased up to 25%, whereas 19% of PAHs was removed with $H_2O_2$ alone. The addition of 1% of olive oil to the contaminated soil before the Fenton reaction or simultaneously increased the removal rate about 15%, compared to the case of Fenton reaction only. There were no significant differences in the removal rates of PAHs, regardless of different kinds and concentration of oils. (olive oil, soybean oil, and used-vegetable oil). The used-vegetable oils were not different from the new, expensive oils in the removal rate, so their use will be desirable in saving the money. In addition of 1% of olive oil after the reaction of 3% $H_2O_2$ and 2.5 mM $FeSO_4$(III), the removal rates of 3~4 and 5~6 ring compounds were increased 13% and 17%, respectively, compared to the case of Fenton reaction only.
This study was carried out to induce plant regeneration via shoot formation from sucker explants of Rubus fruticosus L. To induce adventitious shoots, sucker explants were sterilized in $1.2\%$ NaOCl solution, and cultured on the MS solid medium supplemented with kinetin (0.5, 1.0, 3.0 mg/L) and BA (0.5, 1.0, 3.0 mg/L), respectively. As above, to induce adventitious shoots, sucker explants were cultured on the MS solid medium supplemented with IBA (0, 0.1, 1.0 mg/L) and BA (0, 0.1, 1.0, 2.0 mg/L). After 4 weeks of culture, the highest frquency $(100\%)$ of shoot formation from sucker explants was obtained from the medium with 1.0 mg/L BA. The highest shoot number per explant from in vitro shoot explants was 5.3. After 10 weeks of culture, the number of shoot per explant was increased. The highest frequency $(85\%)$ of root formation was obtained at 0.5 mg/L glycine medium, when the explant with shoot were cultured on the MS medium containing glycine at various concentrations from 0 to 2.0 mg/L. The survival rate of the plantlets after transfer to plastic pots containing sand, soil, and vermiculite (1:1:1, vol.) was $95\%$. The results indicate that micropropagation procedure can be applied for an efficient mass propagation of Rubus fruticosus.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of magnesium concentrations in fertilizer solution on growth and cut flower quality of chrysanthemum 'Biarritz'. The nutrient concentrations in plant tissue and soil solution of root media were also determined. Magnesium deficiency appeared on older leaves with interveinal yellow-green chlorosis. Marginal chlorosis and necrosis also developed on some of older leaves. Elevation of Mg concentration in fertilizer solution increased cut flower weight at harvesting stage resulting in the 8.84g in 1.5mM treatment. Dry weight of whole above ground plant tissue increased as Mg concentrations in fertilizer solution were elevated within the range from 0 to 15mM, but that of 20mM decreased compared to 15mM treatment. The dry weight of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5mM treatments were 8.42, 8.75 and 8.848 and tissue Mg contents of those based on the youngest fully expanded leaves at harvesting stage were 0.34, 0.53 and $0.71\%$, respectively. Based on dry weight and tissue Mg contents, Mg fertilization to maintain tissue contents higher than $0.64\%$ is necessary to ensure flower quality and yield. By considering the concentration in 15mM treatment, Mg concentration in soil solution of root media should be higher than $3.68mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ at harvesting stage.
The study was performed to evaluate the effect of landfill leachate on the hydraulic conductivity of Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL) with two types of leachate. GCL used in waste landfills have a significant ability as a barrier material, however, they also have a potential danger when exposed to some organic and inorganic leachate as well as humic materials. In this study, swelling tests and hydraulic conductivity tests were performed to evaluate the effect of humic materials and landfill leachate on the hydraulic characteristics of the GCL. The result of swelling tests showed that the amount of humic materials and high electronic conductivity caused a decrease of the swelling of bentonite. This is expected to increase the hydraulic conductivity of GCL. The increasing of hydraulic conductivity observed for GCL permeated with 0-leachate was significantly higher than that of Y-leachate. This result shows that humic materials are obviously affecting with the increasing of hydraulic conductivity of GCL.
Chemical speciation and transport of heavy metals in soil environment could be controlled by humic acid. In order to understand the mechanism on competitive adsorption of Cd and Cu on the surface of humic acid extracted from peat, the charge development of humic acid were investigate through a batch adsorption experiment with a series of different background electrolytes levels. The competitive adsorption of Cd and Cu to the humic acid were estimated according to the model using the proton binding constant obtained from the above batch test. The affinity of Cu to the carboxyl group on the humic acid was higher than that of Cd, but the affinity to the phenolic group was lower than to the carboxyl group. It seems that the amount of adsorbed Cd and Cu could be estimated using the proton binding constant obtained from a solution with single background ion. However, it is difficult to interpret the competitive adsorption of Cd and Cu with the constant for single background ion.

This study was carried out to determine the effect of pig slurry applications on the forage yield of Sorghum${\times}$Sudangrass hybrid and leaching of $NO_3$-N in volcanic ash soil in Jeju. It was arranged as a randomized block design with seven treatments: chemical fertilizer ($N-P_2$$O_{5}$$-K_2$O=200-l50-150kg/ha), pig slurry 200kg N/ha, pig slurry 300kg N/ha, pig slurry 400kg N/ha, pig slurry 100kg N/ha+chemical fertilizer 100kg N/ha, pig slurry 150kg N/ha+chemical fertilizer 100kg N/ha, pig slurry 200kg N/ha+chemical fertilizer 100kg N/ha. The mean dry matter yield of Sorghum${\times}$Sudan grass hybrid per ha for 4 years(1998 to 2001) was higher(p<0.05) in pig slurry 300kg N/ha(l7,279kg) and pig slurry 400kg N/ha(17,817kg) treatments than those of other treatments. The $NO_3$-N concentrations of leaching water at soil depth 30cm in all treatments were excess the standard of WHO with level of $10.0mg/\ell$ on 20 days of the seeding, but this $NO_3$-N concentrations found to be below $5.0mg/\ell$ on August.
Mn-impregnated activated carbon (Mn-AC) prepared at different conditions was applied in the treatment of synthetic wastewater containing both organic and inorganic contaminants. Phenol and As(III) was used as the representative organic and inorganic contaminants, respectively. After evaluation of the physicochemical characteristic and stability of Mn-AC, oxidation of As(III) as well as adsorption of phenol by activated carbon(AC) and Mn-AC were investigated in a batch reactor. To investigate the stability of Mn-AC, dissolution of Mn from each Mn-AC was measured pH ranging from 2 to 4. Although Mn-AC was unstable at a strong acidic condition, the dissoluted Mn was below 3 ppm at pH 4. XRD analysis of Mn-AC indicated that the mineral type of the impregnated manganese was $Mn_2O_3$. From the simultaneous treatment of As(III) and phenol by AC and Mn-AC, As(III) oxidation by Mn-AC was greater than that by AC at lower pH, while the reverse order was observed at higher pH. After impregnation of Mn onto AC, 13% decrease of the surface area was observed, causing 8% reduction of phenol removal. Considering removal properties of As(III) and phenol, Mn-AC could be applied in the simultaneous treatment of wastewater contaminated with multi-contaminants.
