This thesis is results of experimental works on the behavior of the cut-and-cover tunnel. Centrifuge model tests were performed to simulate the behavior of the cut-and-cover tunnels having cross sections of national road and subway tunnels. Model experiments were carried out with changing the cut slope and the slope of filling ground surface. Displacements of tunnel lining resulted from artificially accelerated gravitational force up to 40g of covered material used in model tests, were measured during centrifuge model tests. In model tests, Jumunjin Standard Sand with the relative density of 80 % and the zinc plates were used for the covered material and the flexible tunnel lining, respectively. Basic soil property tests were performed to obtain it's the property of Jumumjin Standard Sand. Shear strength parameters of Jumunjin Standard Sand were obtained by performing the triaxial compression tests. Direct shear tests were also carried out to find the mechanical properties of the interface between the lining and the covered material. Compared results model tests estimation with respect to displacements of the lining.
Nonlinearity and anisotropy of soil should be considered for the exact prediction of deformation before the failure state. In this study, a new constitutive model is developed in which the nonlinearity of soil is formulated by Ramberg-Osgood equation and the soil anisotropy is implemented by the cross-anisotropic elasticity. Nonlinear anisotropic model and other models for comparison are used to analyze the simple boundary value problems and the circular footing problem. In the results, the anisotropic ratio of elastic modulus is a key value for the bulk modulus of soil, the coeffcient of earth pressure at rest, and the slope of effective stress paths. Furthermore, it is found that the nonlinearity of soil considering the in-situ stresses has the great influence on the magnitude of settlements.
The backfilled space carl have various shapes such as vertical or lateral symmetric, unsymmetric slope depending on field conditions. Kellogg (1993) suggested the different equations for the backfill earth pressure and the lateral stress ratio considering that the stresses are different between the symmetrically sloped backfilled space and the vertical one. Kellogg (1993) assumed the stress generated on sloped wall surface as the simple internal friction angle of backfilled soil. However, Moon (1997) suggested modified Kellogg equation assuming that stress behavior in the sloped wall will be varied according to the rotation angle of principal stress and the friction of sloped wall surface. This study has compared and investigated the horizontal stresss of unsymmetrical backfilled space numerically and experimentally obtained when Kellogg lateral stress ratio is appled to and when average lateral stress ratio considering unsymmetric backfill slop of left and right are applied to the modified Kellogg equation. It is shown that the horizontal stress on the sloped wall has good match numerically and experimentally in the modified Kellogg equation when Kellogg's lateral stress ratio in symmetric condition is applied to the unsymmetric condition. But the horizontal stress on the vertical wall shows disagreement numerically and experimentally. The horizontal stress results in good agreement numerically and experimentally when the average lateral stress ratio of left and right at unsymmetric slop as applied to the modified Kellogg equation. Therefore, it is estimated that the application of the average lateral stress ratio to the left and right wall should be considered when backfilled space formed unsymmetric conditions.
To verify the reinforcing effect of the strips which are inserted in the backfill, but not connected to the face wall, model tests are executed. As the reinforcing effect is expected to reduce the active thrust acting on the retaining wall, test programmes included the measurements of the thrust. As a result. it is ascertained that the active thrusts are reduced by as much as 50%. Besides, efficient arrangement and the optimum length of the strips are verified. And the the number of reinforcing strips are increased, are close to the Rankine's hypothesis.
A small-scale reinforced earth wall was constructed in a laboratory to investigate the effect of wall rigidity and of construction sequence on the wall. A full continuous wall facing and a discrete wall facing were designed and constructed for tests. These two different facing systems should adapt different construction procedures due to their different facing shapes. The model wall was built with geo-grid reinforcement, sand, and facings on rigid surface. The model wall was instrumented with earth pressure gages, LVDTs, and strain gages. The experimental results have shown differences in wall behavior related to construction sequence and types of wall facing. It is found in this study that the reinforced earth wall built with full continuous facing is safer than the reinforced earth wall built with the discrete wall facing.
In the case of underground power utilities pipe such as circular pipe, the most difficult problem is low compaction efficiency of the bottom of pipe inducing the failure of utilities. To overcome this problem, various studies have been performed and one of these is CLSM (controlled low strength materials) accelerated flow ability. CLSM has already been stage of commercial use in the foreign countries led by power company. In this study, we estimated the behavior of flexible pipe with flowable backfill materials and sand to compare on the DB24 load. The results showed that the deformation of flexible pipe is affected by types of backfill materials. CLSM shows better behavior characteristics than compacting sand. But numerical and analytical results that peformed to compare to the field test results showed big gap with the field results.

Recently, the use of buried glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) pipes is widespread and ever increasing trend in the industry. GRP pipes are attractive for use in harsh environments, such as for the collection and transmission of liquids which are abrasive and/or corrosive. The structural behavior of a GRP pipes buried under the ground is different from that of a rigid one made of concrete or clay, for example. A GRP pipe buried under the ground is deflected circumferentially by several percent and the stresses in the pipe are mainly compressive stresses. A GRP pipes has been introduced by a number of manufacturers for selection and used by underground pipeline designers. In all cases, the modified Spangler's equation is recommended by these manufacturers for predicting the ring deflection of these pipes under dead and live loads. In this paper, the ring deflection of buried GRP pipe is evaluated and discussed based on the result of analytical investigation.
In a construction site, excavation work has a close relation with temporary earth retaining structure. In order to build the underground structure most effectively in a narrow space, prevent soil relaxation of the external behind ground in excavation work, and maintain a ground water level, it is required to install a temporary earth retaining structure that secures safety. To prevent soil washoff in underground excavation work, the conventional method of temporary earth retaining structure is to make a temporary wall and build the internal support with the use of earth anchor, raker, and struct for excavation work. RSB method that improves the problem of the conventional method is to remove the internal support, make use of two-row soldier piles and bracing, and thereby to resist earth pressure independently for underground excavation. This study revealed that through the field application cases of RSB method and the measurement result, the applicability of the method for installing a temporary earth retaining structure, the assessment result, and displacement all met allowable values of measurement, and that the RSB method, compared to the conventional method, improved constructability and economy.

Semi-integral abutment bridges are a type of integral abutment bridges. These bridges eliminate expansion joints on the structure and can be used in situations not suitable for full-integral abutment bridge. Moreover, Semi-integral bridges have excellent maintenance and can be economically constructed. This study is about precast wall-type blocks at each end which provide lateral support for PSC girder, as well as acting as retaining walls to resist longitudinal movement of semi-integral abutment bridge. The end-diaphragm connection between ended blocks of PSC girders can be achieved by in-suit nonshrinkage concrete. The results show that 3-point experiment of end-diaphragm beam have an acceptable performance which is so better than results of structural design. Moreover, the effects of backfill soil on semi-integral abutment bridge constructed are analyzed the behavior according to the temperature changes.

The steep slopes have been increased of new roads, industrial site development and large scale residential development. The preservation administration and steep slope construction are currently investigated by many researchers in Korea. However, concrete retaining wall or reinforced soil (i.e. Block or Pannel) are being applied for the steep slope, which results in the front face form of the structure being limited. This research investigates the method that can make up afforestation environment-friendly circumstances during the construction of steep slope structure. It is considered that steep slope reinforced structure would be possible based on the monitoring results about earth pressure, horizontal displacement and consolidation quality generated during the construction of whole constructing reinforced structure. Also, there no problems in grassy surface, drainage, and deformation in spite of rainy season after construction period and until now. So that the seeding soil layer surface reinforced soil method could be adopt for steep slope reinforced structure and others.
