DC Potential Drop 측정을 이용한 S45C강의 템퍼링과정 비파괴 평가 (Nondestructive Evaluation of Tempering Process of S45C Steel using DC Potential Drop Measurement)

  • DC potential drop(DCPD) measurement system was made and the optimum measuring conditions have been studied. The room temperature resistivity of commercially available medium carbon steel(S45C) was measured using this technique. DCPD was measured in the specimens which were hardened and tempered at different temperatures. It was found that DCPD reflected the change of the microstructure during tempering very sensitively. It was possible to monitor the stage of tempering of S45C steel nondestructively using DCPD measurement.

  • Martensitic high-strength steels revealed superior mechanical properties of high tensile strength exceeding 1000 Mpa, and have been applied in a variety of industries. When the steels are exposed to corrosive environments, however, they are susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement (HE), resulting in catastrophic cracking failure. To improve resistance to HE, it is crucial to obtain significant insight into the exact physical nature associated with hydrogen diffusion behavior in the steel. For martensitic steels, tempering condition should be adjusted carefully to improve toughness. The tempering process involves microstructural modifications, that provide changes in hydrogen diffusion/trapping behavior in the steels. From this perspective, this study examined the relationship between tempering condition and hydrogen diffusion behavior in the steels. Results based on glycerin measurements and hydrogen permeation evaluations indicated that hydrogen diffusion/trapping behavior was strongly affected by the characteristics of precipitates, as well as by metallurgical defects such as dislocation. Tempering condition should be adjusted properly by considering required mechanical properties and resistance to HE.

  • In automotive industries, various processes for the cost reduction have been investigated lively. As one of them, powder metallurgy becomes influential. Compared to other methods used for he manufacture of steel components the Powder metallurgy process is competitive primarily due to the small number of production steps to reach the final geometry and thereby also the energy-efficiency. In this paper, to alter present forging process into powder metallurgy process by which the automotive clutch disc spline hub is manufactured machining process, the mechanical properties of sintered materials is investigated by specimen test. Selecting the 3 kinds of materials-SMF 4040, SMF 9060 and DHP-1, their properties according to heat treatment such as carburizing -tempering and plasma-nitrodizing are compared. By result of specimen test - tensile test, compression ring test, Impacting test, measurment of hardness, and microstructure analysis - we concluded that SMF 9060 and carburizing-tempering heat treatment is an optimal material and heat treatment method for the spline hub. It will be able to reduce manufacturing cost and weight.

표면처리 및 윤활제에 따른 열간 단조 금형의 수명 평가 (Die Life Estimation of Hot Forging for Surface Treatment and Lubricants)

  • This study explains the effects of lubricant and surface treatment on hot forging die life. The mechanical and thermal load, and thermal softening which is happened by the high temperature of die, in hot and warm forging, cause die wear, heat checking and plastic deformation, etc. This study is fur the effects of solid lubricants and surface treatment condition for hot forging die. Because cooling effect and low friction are essential to the long life of dies, optimal surface treatment and lubricant are very important to improve die life for hot forging process. The main factors, which affect die hardness and heat transfer, are surface treatments and lubricants, which are related to thermal diffusion coefficient and heat transfer coefficient, etc. For verifying these effects, experiments are performed for hot ring compression test and heat transfer coefficient in various conditions as like different initial billet temperatures and different loads. The effects of lubricant and surface treatment for hot forging die life are explained by their thermal characteristics. The new developed technique in this study for predicting tool life can give more feasible means to improve the tool life in hot forging process.

중탄소 저합금강의 인장성질에 미치는 템퍼링의 영향 (Effects of Tempering on Tensile Properties of Medium-Carbon Low-Alloy Steels)

  • A series of Ni-Cr-Mo alloy steels were austenitized, quenched to martensite, and tempered at various temperature and time conditions. Tensile testing was conducted at room temperature with cylindrical specimens, and hardness was measured using Rockwell hardness tester. In the tempering stage I, high strain hardening and yield strength accounted for the high ultimate strength and hardness. In the tempering stage II, strengths and hardness linearly decreased with increasing tempering temperature. Specimens tempered in the temperin stage III showed incipient discontinuous yielding and tensile strengths only slightly higher than yield strengths. Ductilities decreased slightly in specimens tempered in the tempered martensite embrittlement range, and severely decreased in specimens tempered for 10 hours at $500^{\circ}C$ in the temper embrittlement range. Specimens tempered at $600^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours showed recrystallized microstructures, a number of fine dimples, and increased strain hardening, probably due to the precipitation of alloy carbides. The simple formulae for the mechanical properties of these steels were suggested as a function of carbon content and Hollomon-Jaffe tempering parameter.

Mod. 440A 마르텐사이트 스테인리스강의 기계적 성질에 미치는 템퍼링의 영향 (The effect of Tempering on the Mechanical Properties of Mod. 440A Martensitic Stainless Steel)

  • In this study, the effect of tempering treatment on the mechanical properties in modified 440A steel has been investigated. The amount of remaining carbide decreased with increasing the austenitizing treatment temperature, and all carbides were completely dissolved at $1250^{\circ}C$. The amount of remaining carbide decreased with increasing the time of austenitizing, but the carbide remained insoluble up to 120 minutes at $1050^{\circ}C$. With increasing the tempering temperature, tensile strength decreased, and elongation increased slowly, while hardness rapidly decreased, and impact value unchanged and then rapidly increased over $500^{\circ}C$. The strength and hardness slowly decreased, while the elongation and impact absorbed energy increased with increasing the tempering time. $Cr_{23}C_6$ type carbide was precipitated and sharp decrease of elongation and toughness by tempering did not appear.

  • Hot forging is widely used in the manufacturing of automotive component. The mechanical, thermal load and thermal softening which is happened by the high temperature die in hot forging. Tool life of hot forging decreases considerably due to the softening of the surface layer of a tool caused by a high thermal load and long contact time between the tool and workpieces. The service life of tools in hot forging process is to a large extent limited by wear, heat crack, plastic deformation. These are one of the main factors affecting die accuracy and tool life. It is desired to predict tool life by developing life prediction method by FE-simulation. Lots of researches have been done into the life prediction of cold forming die, and the results of those researches were trustworthy, but there have been little applications of hot forming die. That is because hot forming process has many factors influencing tool life, and there was not accurate in-process data. In this research, life prediction of hot forming die by wear analysis and plastic deformation has been carried out. To predict tool life, by experiment of tempering of die, tempering curve was obtained and hardness express a function of main tempering curve.

  • 본 연구에서는 실제 고온, 고압용기에 장기 사용하여 재료 특성이 변화된 열 화재와 열화재를 열처리하여 충격치를 회복시킨 회복재의 두 종류의 재료를 사용하여 탄소성 파괴 인성치 J$_{IC}$실험을 수행하여 장기사용에 따른 재질열화에 의한 파괴 인성치의 변화 상태를 검토해 보고, 이를 응용한 수명예측 즉, 3차원 표면 균열을 갖 인 판이 열화된 경우와 건전한 경우를 가정하여 피로 파괴 과정중 파단 특성에 어떤 차이가 일어날까에 대해 연구 검토해 보았다.

  • Low cycle fatigue tests are performed on high strength low alloy steels that be developed for submarine material. The relation between absorbed plastic strain energy and numbers of cycle to failure is examined in order to predict the low cycle fatigue life of structural steels by using plastic strain energy method. The cyclic properties are determined by a least square fit techniques. The life predicted by the plastic strain energy method is found to coincide with experiment data and results obtained from the Coffin-Manson method. Also the cyclic behavior of structural steels is characterized by cyclic softening with increasing number of cycle at room temperature. Especially, low cycle fatigue characteristics and microstructural changes of structural steels are investigated according to changing tempering temperatures. In the case of PFS steels, the $\varepsilon$-Cu is formed in 550C of tempering temperature and enhances the low cycle fatigue properties.

초강인 AISI 4340 강의 부식 저항성 향상 및 응력부식균열 (Improvement on the Corrosion Resistance and Stress Corrosion Cracking of Ultra-high Strenght AISI 4340 Steel)

  • 초강인 AISI 4340강을 85$0^{\circ}C$에서 2시간 동안 오스테나이징 처리 후 수냉하고, 250, 400, $600^{\circ}C$에서 각각 2시간 동안 템퍼링 처리를 하였다. AISI 4340강의 인장 특성은 상온에서 측정되었다. AISI 4340강 위에 니켈 전해도금된 것과 도금되지 않은 시편의 분극 특성이 3.5wt%NaCI 수용액과 인공해수에서 측정되었다. AISI 4340강위에 니켈 전해도금된 시편은 500mV(vs. Ag/AgCI)이하의 전위에서 부식 저항이 크게 향상되었다. 그러나 1A/$\textrm{cm}^2$의 전류밀도에서 30분 이상 니켈 전해도금된 시편은 도금층에 불순물과 기공이 형성되었기 때문에 AISI 4340강의 부식 저항은 감소되었다. AISI 4340강의 수소취화형 응력부식균열을 여러 작용 응력과 음극인가전력에서 U-bend 시편을 이용하여 IN 3.5 wt% NaCI 수용액에서 조사되었고, 수소취화형 응력부식균열 거동은 주사전자현미경으로 조사되었다.
