  • 5G New Radio Access Technology(: RAT) is studied by many researchers because the current radio frequency is insufficient to accommodate the increased mobile communication data traffic. However, there are few researches to study on the issue whether the wired mobile network can accommodate the new RAT. Therefore, in the paper, the study on the issue whether the Radio over Fiber(: RoF) system can accommodate the new RATs such as millimeter wave communication, terahertz communication, and optical wireless communication. As a result of the study, only millimeter wave communication deserve to be considered in ten years and even RoF system may not support the increased bandwidth of the millimeter wave communication when beamforming is used.

  • The coupling between copper wire and a THz electromagnetic wave is one of the important factors to build up the magnitude and spectrum of a THz wave. We measured a I THz spectrum range THz pulse into a $480{\mu}m$ diameter and 23cm long copper wire waveguide. We measured THz pulses up to $275{\mu}m$ air gap between the end of the copper wire and transmitter or receiver chips. The coupling sensitivity of the transmitter is 3 times bigger than that of the receiver. The THz pulses propagated to air by the end of the receiver-side copper wire tip acting as a transmitter antenna. We confirmed that the THz field concentrates near the copper wire surface by opening the pin hole to the copper wire waveguide.

  • Analysis of defect signals inside glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) was conducted through deconvolution of terahertz (THz) wave. The GFRP specimen with internal defects was manufactured and the THz signal was measured through the reflection mode of the Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy (THz-TDS) system. For deconvolution of the measured THz signal, the peak position of the THz signal was amplified through Normalized Cross Correlation (NCC) of the incident and detected THz signals. The position and intensity of the amplified peak were extracted as impulse, and the extracted signal of the impulse position was removed from the THz original signal. By repeating the process, the critical impulses, which represent boundary of the specimen, were derived. The deconvolution process was verified by confirming that the original THz signal without noise can be restored through the convolution of the critical impulses and the incident signal. From the derived critical impulses, the thickness of the internal defect in the GFRP was calculated through the detection time of impulses within 15 ㎛ accuracy.

  • Two-dimensional (2D) images that are produced by terahertz (THz) irradiation we presented. It is possible to obtain 2D image of various materials by observing the amplitude and the phase of the THz signals which go through them. Better images are produced by combining the amplitude and phase of the signal rather than using only one of these. Homomorphic filtering that is one elf the well-known technique of digital image signal processing is effective to reduce the noise signal and can provide better quality images. The results can be applied to real-time imaging afterwards.

  • In this paper, we have proposed and experimentally performed a polarization and phase control method of an optical signal which has same wavelength with the optical carrier to improve phase characteristics of a continuous wave(CW) generated by the double sideband-suppressed carrier(DSB-SC) as one of the famous photomixing technique for making sub-millimeter and terahertz waves. A polarization and phase controlled optical signal has been coupled with the general DSB-SC on an optical coupler. The output of the optical coupler is then photomixed by a photomixer. From our analysis and measurement results, we have found that the amplitude of the generated sub-mm and terahertz CW signal is higher 1.5 dB and the phase noise is lower about 3 dB@10 kHz offset frequency than the general DSBSC. Consequently, since our proposed method has improved the amplitude and phase noise of CW signals in the sub-mm and terahertz bands, it can be helpful results to make low cost CW generator in sub-millimeter and subterahertz bands.

  • A new method on the evaluation of insulation oil was proposed. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) was applied to investigate the properties of the insulating oil. For the diagnostics of oil degradation, three kinds of oils have been analyzed by THz-TDS. The degraded oil showed different optical and electrical constants compared with a new one. Generally, the power absorption coefficient, the refractive index, the dielectric constant and loss $tan{\delta}$ of the oil increase as the aging of insulating oil proceed. And the characteristics of two kind of insulation oil, 1-4 and 7-4, was compared in terahertz spectral region. Difference in refractive index and complex dielectric constant has been observed between the samples. The results of this study suggest that THz-TDS is a promising new means for evaluating degradation and identification of insulating oil.

  • One of the most remarkable aspects of the recently completed 3GPP release-15 (5G new radio phase 1) is the fact that some millimeter-wave bands have been officially approved for 5G mobile communications. Because the demand for higher transmission capacity has only grown, other millimeter-wave or even higher-frequency terahertz-wave bands have attracted more attention over time. Based on this effort, this paper reviews and discusses the existing technologies and their trends in high-frequency circuits and systems at the millimeter and terahertz-wave bands, particularly for future mobile communications.

  • A study of terahertz waves (T-ray) was made for the nondestructive evaluation of FRP (Fiber reinforced plastics) composite materials. The to-be-used systems were time domain spectroscopy (TDS) and continuous wave (CW). The composite materials investigated include both turbine blades of wind energy (non-conducting polymeric composites) and conducting carbon fiber composites. Terahertz signals in the TDS mode resembles that of ultrasound; however, unlike ultrasound, a terahertz pulse was not able to detect a material with conductivity. This was demonstrated in CFRP (Carbon fiber reinforced plastics) laminates. Refractive index (n) was defined as one of mechanical properties; so a method was solved in order solve the "n" in the material with the cut parts of the turbine blades of wind energy. The defects and anomalies investigated by terahertz radiation were foreign material inclusions and simulated disband. Especially, it is found that the T-ray went through the turbine blade with greater thickness (about 90mm).

  • Terahertz waves (T-ray) was extensively studied for the NDE (nondestructive evaluation) of characterization of trailing edges for a use of turbines composed with composite materials. The used NDE system were consisted of both CW(Continuous wave) and TDS (Time domain spectroscopy). The FRP composites were utilized for two kinds of both trailing edges of wind energy (non-conducting polymeric composites) and carbon fiber composites with conducting properties. The signals of T-ray in the TDS (Time domain spectroscopy) mode resembles almost that of ultrasound waves; however, a terahertz pulse could not penetrate a material with conductivity unlike ultrasound. Also, a method was suggested to obtain the "n" in the materials, which is called the refractive index (n). The data of refractive index (n) could be solved for the trailing edges. The trailing edges were scanned for characterization and inspection. C-scan and B-scan images were obtained and best optimal NDE techniques were suggested for complicated geometry samples by terahertz radiation. Especially, it is found that the defect image of T-ray corresponded with defect locations for the trailing edges of wind mill.
