  • The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is conducting surveillance of climate change vectors across all regions in Korea to counteract the spread of these vectors. As a part of this surveillance project, wild rodents were captured using traps to investigate the spread of chigger mites, the vector of Tsutsugamushi disease, across Jeonbuk, Jinan region, and to conduct studies on pathogens. Twenty samplers were used to sample chigger mites weekly from September to November in four different locations. Six hundred and eleven chigger mites of eight varying types were captured. The largest number of captured chigger mites was N. tamiyai, with 434 samples (71.0%). With the addition of 66 wild rodents captured from traps, 3,050 chigger mites were sampled, which yielded a Chigger index of 46.2. The monthly Chigger index was highest in November with a value of 206.1. the result of the test conducted in the presence of pathogens showed two positive results, each from May and September, out of all 85 pools. This result was aligned with the increased frequency in tsutsugamushi disease cases in spring and fall seasons.

  • In order to monitor the occurrence of chigger mites, collectors were installed at four places: rice field, field, waterway, and grass field. Totally, 207 chigger mites belonging to 7 species were collected. Starting with 2 mites in the 5 weeks of September, a maximum of 49 mites were collected during 3 weeks of November. Totally, 81, 52, 47 and 27 mites were collected from grass field, waterways, rice field, and field, respectively. Analysis of sampling and collecting chigger mites determined that the most encountered species was Neotrombicula kwangneun (73, 35.3%), followed by Leptotrombidium palpale (46, 22.2%), N. tamiyai (41, 19.8%) and N. asakawai (27, 13.0%). The grab results of 44 wild rodents revealed Apodemus agrarius (35, 79.5%), Crocidura spp. (5, 11.4%), Craseomys regulus (2, 4.5%), and A. peninsulae (2, 4.5%; which had not been detected previously). A total of 6,628 chigger mites were collected from rodents, and the chigger index was determined to be 150.6. Chigger index was found to be highest at 234.2 in October, followed by 223.3 in November, 75.6 in April, and 66.2 in May. PCR from all chigger mite samples tested negative for the Tsutsugamushi pathogen.

  • We investigated the distribution of chigger mites in Seogwipo, Jeju Island to conduct surveillance for the presence of Orientia tsutsugamushi. Using a total of 20 samplers, chigger mite larvas were sampled weekly from September to November in Rice field, Field, Waterway, and Glass field (4 locations), and we found up to 51 larvas of 3 different species of chigger mites. 64 field mice were captured when sampling for chigger mite-infested rodents in rice fields, waterways, fields, reservoirs and hills (5 locations) for 9 months from March, 2018 to November, using 100 Sherman traps with placing 20 traps in each location, and in each location the trap index was 0.08. Only back-striped field mice (Apodemus agrarius) were captured one at a time. They were most frequently captured in April with 15 mice, and then 436 chigger mites were collected from the total of 64 captured wild rodent, showing a chigger index of 6.8. The chigger index was the highest in November at 46.0, followed by 6.8 in July and 4.6 in June. PCR was performed to investigate if there were any O. tsutsugamushi hosts among the 487 chigger mites sampled from the captured rodents and this turned out to be negative.

  • Repellent and acaricidal activities of eucalyptus oil, permethrin, and DEET against Leptotrombidium pallidum larvae, which are a vector transmitting tsutsugamushi disease, were evaluated under laboratory conditions using a filter paper impregnated method. The $LD_{50}$ values of eucalyptus oil and DEET were 0.025 and 0.018 $mg/cm^2$, respectively while that of permethrin was higher than 0.2 $mg/cm^2$. In the repellency test of these materials at 6.14 $mg/cm^2$, eucalyptus oil gave complete repellency, and the larvae crossed the treated zone killed. But permethrin showed 60% repellency at 9.20 $mg/cm^2$ and the mites croosed the zone were not killed. The percent repellency of DEET at 0.53 $mg/cm^2$ was 8.3 and 2.8 times higher than that of permethrin and eucalyptus oil, respectively. The acaricidal activities of emulsifiable concentrates-pump sprayers containing the eucalyptus oil as an active ingredient were assayed. The emulsifiable concentrates containing 1% and 3% eucalyptus oil showed weak mortality at 1 hour after treatment, while all ones containing more than 6% oil produced 100% activity against L. pallidum larvae. The mortality also increased as exposure time to the concentrates increase. These results suggest that the potential of eucalyptus oil highly expected to be used as a control or repellent agent against L. pallidum larvae may be very high.

  • Studies on the geographical distribution and the seasonal prevalence of chigger mites, with particular reference to L. paflidum, a vector species of tsutsugamushi disease were carried out during the period of July 1989-October 1990. From total 111 field rodents collected during the study period, 4,498 chiggers were obtained and 12 species of 4 genera were identified. L. paflidum, the vector species was the dorninant species, showing 65.6% of the total chiggers. L. scutellare, known as the important vector species of tsutsugamushi disease in Japan was not found in the study area, except Yesan-gun, Chungcheong-namdo where only one specimen was collected. The distribution of chigger mites was clearly localized by species, showing the different dominant species by locality. The population density of L. paflidum was high at two study areas, moderate at one area and very low at six other areas, compared to the other species. The study on seasonal prevalence of L. paflidum population density resulted that they started appearing in September (9.8%), showed the peak in October (45.4%) and November (30.6%), almost disappeared during the period of December-March (1.3-0%), reappeared in April (12.7%) showing a small peak, and again almost disappeared until September. L. palpafe was appeared only in winter and spring (December-April).
