  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the durability and deterioration of concrete lining in the seven conventional tunnels. These tunnels were constructed about 40~70 years ago, and closed about 10~40 years ago. The field investigation and various laboratory testings were performed for this study. It was observed from the visual, examinations that the concrete linings of 7 tunnels were severely deteriorated, such as, cracks, leakages, desquamation, and exploitations. The compressive strengths obtained from rebound hardness method and uniaxial compressive strength test on core specimens largely differed depending on the locations in the tunnel. The maximum compressive strength of concrete lining was greater about 2 times than the minimum compressive strength of concrete lining in the same tunnel. The results of micro-structural analysis showed that the substances deteriorating the concrete lining, such as ettringite and thaumasite, were detected in the concrete lining of tunnel.

  • Hydro-environmental impact assessments (HEIA) in tunnel constructions have been performed through various methods including preliminary investigations, field tests, numerical simulations, and monitoring. Specially, it is very important to evaluate quantitatively groundwater inflows into tunnels as well as drawdowns caused by tunnelling. Obvious definitions between porous and fractured rock media in hvdrogeologic properties of study regions must be needed to execute HEIA for rational tunnel construction in fractured bedrocks. In this paper, we propose a HEIA on tunnel constructions in fractured rocks media resulted from various hydrogeologic field tests and numerical models on given regions and determination of systematic order, i.e. the technical road map (TRM) of HEIA. These systematic HEIAs are expected to be usefully applied to base data in tunnel construction in fractured rock media.

  • Faults in rock mass have strong influences on the behaviors of rock structure such as rock slope, tunnel and underground space. Thus, it is very important to analyse for the characteristics of fault rocks in design for tunnel. But, due to the limitation of geotechnical investigation in design stages, tunnel engineers have to carry out the face mapping and additional geological survey during tunnel excavation to find the distribution of faults and the engineering properties of faults for support and reinforcement design of tunnel. In this study, various geological survey and field tests were carried out to analyse the characteristics of the large thrust fault zone through the large sectional tunnel is constructed in mica-schist region. Also, the distribution of structural geology, the shape of thrust faults and the mechanical properties of fault rock were studied for the reasonable design of the reinforcement and support method for the highly fractured fault zone in the large-span tunnel.

  • Existing cut-and-cover tunnels are designed regardless of cut-slope under the assumption that the overburden weight of backfill soil acts on tunnel arch and the earth pressure at rest acts on tunnel walls. However, actual earth pressures acting on the tunnel lining depend on open-cut size composed of cut-slope and cut-width, and thus the tunnel lining shows a different structural behavior. This study investigated the effect of cut-slope on structural behavior of the cut-and-cover tunnel lining as follows; Firstly, a comprehensive numerical analysis method using FLAC2D code was used and verified by field measurements of tunnel profile. Secondly, based on the verified numerical analysis technique, earth pressure acting on the lining, and displacement and sectional force developed on the lining were estimated with various shapes of cut-slopes$30^{\circ}\;, 456{\circ},\; 60^{\circ},\; and\;75^{\circ}%). Numerical analysis results indicate that the steeper cut-slope shows the more displacement and moment of the tunnel lining.

  • In South Korea, there are a large number of tunnels because of the mountainous terrain, and to overcome this characteristics, lengths of tunnels are more longer than existing tunnels. The need to improvement current tunnel management contents is giving rise for accidents in tunnel section is continuously increased although lots of efforts to reduce the accidents. Conventionally, disaster prevention have been focused on the Tunnel Management Systems, tunnel operators generally tend to depend on CCTV images for most contents of detailed traffic flow managing. In this paper, investigation about current Tunnel Management Systems contents using IPA survey was conducted, and Priority Improvement Contents(Accident Situation Management Support, 2nd Accident Management Support, Traffic Flow Monitoring), which importance are high, but satisfaction are low, are deducted. Also, CCTV images, lack intuitive understanding, are judged as a main cause of low satisfaction of those contents. To overcome those limitations of the existing Tunnel Management Systems, this study sought to develop a technology for the synthesis of road images to derive traffic information from synthesis images, and the contents improvement stragegy is established. Tunnel operators-oriented satisfaction survey on new contents was carried out, and scored 4.2 on a 5-point scale. This has confirmed that the availability of new contents and at this stage, with pushing ahead of long-tunnels and undersea tunnels construction, politic applications are expected.

  • The tunnels that longer than 2km which have been recently constructed have serious noise problems resulting from the friction of vehicle wheels and pavement. In special, concrete pavement inside tunnels with a closed characteristic increases discomfort due to the traffic noise and the dust of pavement pollutes the air in tunnels. Therefore, it is urgent that we find out ways to cope with. This study purported to reduce noise inside tunnels covers the investigation of various pavement surface treatment methods adapted in developed countries, the analysis of the effect in noise reduction and construction methods and cases. The surface treatment method for silent pavement in tunnels reduced noise to 5dB (A)~10dB (A). Aggregate treatment method is evaluated the most appropriate method in that, related with other surface treatment method, it reduces noise and improves skid resistance. It is necessary for us to introduce equipments and design and rearrange of specification for the development of the silent pavement method in Korea.

  • This study is to understand the effect of the vibration and the stress changes due to the excavation of 2 arch parts of a tunnel, which is a Gyungbu Express Railway tunnel, on the tunnel itself and adjacent slopes in advance, and to analyze the stability. For the estimation of ground conditions, borehole tests, borehole camera logging and seismic logging were performed. Ground properties at a specific location were determined as input constants by performing 2 dimensional analyses with possible ranges of uncertain ground properties. Static and pseudo-static (due to blasting vibration) factors of safety were calculated. The behavior of the tunnel and its vicinity due to the tunnel excavation were predicted by 3 dimensional analyses. It was also tested whether the support system was proper.
