Degradation is commonly observed in field-aged PV modules due to corrosion of the photovoltaic ribbon. The reduced performance is caused by a loss of fill factor due to the high series resistance in the PV ribbon. This study aimed to mitigate the degradation by corrosion using five sacrificial anodes - Al, Zn and their alloys - to identify the most effective material to mitigate the corrosion of the PV ribbon. The corrosion behavior of the five sacrificial anode materials were examined by open circuit potential measurements, potentiodynamic polarization tests, and galvanic current density and potential measurements using a zero resistance ammeter. Immersion tests for 120 hours were also conducted using materials and damp heat test tests were performed for 1500 hours using 4 cell mini modules. The Al-3Mg and Al-3Zn-1Mg sacrificial anodes had a low corrosion rate and reduced drop in power, making then suitable for long-term use.
With rapid increasing production and installation, recycling of photovoltaic modules has become the main issue. According to the research, the accumulation of waste modules will reach to 8600 tons in 2030. Moreover, Crystalline-silicon (c-Si) Photovoltaic modules account for more than 90% of the waste. C-Si PV modules contain 1.3% of weight of photovoltaic ribbon inside which contains the most of lead, tin and copper in the PV modules, which would cause environmental and humility problem. This study provided a valuable metal separation process for PV ribbons. Ribbons content 82.1% of Cu, 8.9% of Sn, 5.2% of Pb, and 3.1% of Ag. All of them were leached by 3M of hydrochloric acid in the optimal condition. Ag was halogenated to AgCl and precipitated. Cu ion was extracted and separated from Pb and Sn by Lix984N then stripped by 3M H2SO4. The effect of the optimal parameters of extraction was also studied in this essay. The maximum extraction efficiency of Cu ion was 99.64%. The separation condition of Pb and Sn were obtained by adjusting the pH value to 4 thought ammonia to precipitate and separate Pb and Sn. The recovery of Pb and Sn can reach 99%.

The recovery of copper from spent photovoltaic ribbon was conducted using thermal treatment method at the range of temperature of $300^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$ under inert atmosphere. The coating layer consisted of lead of 68.99 wt.% and tin of 31.21 wt.% was melted down at elevated temperatures and was collected on the bottom of crucible. The chemical composition of copper ribbon after thermal treatment was analyzed by ICP-MS (Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) and the purity of copper was found to be obtained up to about 96 wt.% regardless of temperatures. The cross-sectional area of the specimen was also examined by SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and EDX (energy dispersive X-ray microscopy).

We have studied the effects of Ag on the characteristics of $Sn_{60}Pb_{40}Ag_x$ (wt%) solder for photovoltaic ribbon. Ag atoms in the solder formed an alloy phase of $Ag_3Sn$ after reacting with some part of Sn atoms, while they did not react with Pb atoms, but decreased the mean size of Pb solid phase. The enhancement of peel strength between solar cell and ribbon is an important part in the developments of long-lifespan solar module. The peel strength of the solder ribbon of $Sn_{60}Pb_{40}$ (wt%) was $169N/mm^2$, and it was largely enhanced by adding a small amount of Ag atoms. The maximum peel strength was $295N/mm^2$ in the solder ribbon of $Sn_{60}Pb_{40}Ag_2$ (wt%). This result is caused by the high binding energy of 162.9 kJ/mol between Ag atoms in the solder and Ag atoms in Ag sheet.

We have studied the effects of Ag on the characteristics of $Sn_{43}Bi_{57}Ag_x$(wt%) lead-free solders for photovoltaic ribbon. Ag atoms in the solder formed an alloy phase of Ag3Sn after reacting with some part of Sn atoms, while they did not react with Bi atoms, but decreased the mean size of Bi solid phase and the thickness of solder. When Ag atoms of 3.0 wt% was added to eutectic $Sn_{43}Bi_{57}$(wt%) solder, it showed the optimally useful results that the peel strength of photovoltaic ribbon greatly increased and the sheet resistance of the solder decreased. In the meanwhile, the eutectic $Sn_{43}Bi_{57}$(wt%) solder showed a low melting temperature of $138.9^{\circ}C$, and showed a very similar result regardless of the added amount of Ag atoms.

We studied the various characteristics of Sn-In (wt%) Pb-free solders for photovoltaic ribbon application. The solders near the eutectic composition of Sn48In52 (wt%) existed in InSn4 and In3Sn alloy phases, and in In crystal phase, but not in Sn crystal phase. In addition, the InSn4 phase (γ-alloy) existed separately from the In3Sn (β-alloy) and the In phase confirmed by an SEM-EDS-mapping. The melting temperature of the eutectic solder of Sn48In52 (wt%) was 119.2℃, and when the Sn content decreased in reference to the eutectic composition, it slightly increased to 121.4℃, but when the Sn content increased, it remained almost constant at 119.1℃. The peel strength of the ribbon plated with the Sn42In58 (wt%) solder was 38.7 N/mm2, and it tended to increase when the Sn content increased. The peel strength of the eutectic Sn48In52 (wt%) solder was 53.6 N/mm2, and that of the Sn51In49 (wt%) solder was 61.6 N/mm2 that was the highest.

We have studied the effects of Ag on the characteristics of Sn48In52Agx (wt%) low-melting solders for photovoltaic ribbons. The Sn48In52 (wt%) solder coexisted in the InSn4 and In3Sn alloys. Ag atoms added in the solder formed an AgIn2 alloy by reacting with some part of In atoms, while they did not react with Sn atoms. The addition of Ag atoms in the Sn48In52Agx (wt%) solders showed useful results; an increase in peel strength and a decrease in melting temperature. The peel strength of the ribbon plated with the Sn48In52 (wt%) solder was 53.6 N/mm2, and that of the Sn48In52Ag1 (wt%) solder largely increased to 125.1 N/mm2. In the meanwhile, the melting temperature of the Sn48In52 (wt%) solder was 119.2℃, and that of the Sn48In52Ag1 (wt%) solder decreased to 114.0℃.
