  • Laserthermia is a new method of local hyperthermia using fiber optic guided probe with computer controlled Nd-YAG laser system. We used a synthetic sapphire probe and allowed irradiation with contolled low power laser energy (less than 5W), in different thermal condition (temprature: 38.5~50 degrees C) for 10 minutes, in the normal brain tissue of 18 rabbits. In results, the histological changes of brain tissue was variable (myelin condensation, chromatin condensation, nuclear waving and palisading, RBC discoloration, cell necrosis) in microscopic findings after laser irradiation, but changing area was not occured proportionally in thermal condition level. Cell necrosis appears to over 44.5 degrees C and the distance was about 1.25 mm. This study, using computer controlled laserthermia system for interstitial local hyperthermia, may offer many advantages in the experimental treatment and clinical management of tumor. Minimizing normal tissue damage is now being developed.

  • Three evergreen ground-cover species were tested and evaluated for cold acclimation with different lights in central Korea to enrich the varieties of ground cover plants for over-wintering. Nandina domestica which recently started to be planted in central Korea had high chlorophyll unit with shade condition in both locations, Banpo and Gwacheon during winter. Light condition had no influence on chlorophyll unit in Banpo after April, meanwhile full sun condition decreased chlorophyll unit significantly in Gwacheon, which is exposed to cold wind from north. Ophiopogon japonicas had more than double chlorophyll unit in shade condition compared to that in full light condition in both investigation areas in February. In addition, higher value of L and b in shade condition had been maintained than in full sun condition throughout investigation period. However, leaves in Gwacheon were de-colorized in full sun condition after over-wintering. Pachysandra terminalis had more higher chlorophyll unit in shade condition compared to in full sun condition in both investigation areas in February. But light conditions had not effect the difference of chlorophyll unit of Gwacheon in April. Therefore, The present results suggest that evergreen ground covers with shade condition would be used as landscape materials in the capital area.

  • This study was conducted to determine injury symptoms of orchids by sulfur dioxide gases, three orchid plants (Phalaenopsis, Cymbidium, Oncidium) were exposed to sulfur dioxide gas in an enclosed growth chambers. Sulfur dioxide gases treatments consist of five different concentrations (0, 5, 10 25, and 50 ppm) and plant exposure of 18 hours with $25{\pm}5^{\circ}C$ air temperature and $50{\pm}5%$ relative humidity. SPAD values for chlorophyll content and percent leaf injury as well as leaf ion exudation were measured before and after the gas treatments. Phalaenopsis leaves showed 23.3% leaf injury at 10 ppm sulfur dioxide gas, whereas Cymbidium and Oncidium showed 4.0 and 4.4% leaf injury under 25 ppm or less, respectively. Major leaf injury symptoms appeared as initial water-soaking under side of the leaf, followed by rapidly progressed complete leaf discolorization or chlorosis. As the gas concentration increased, the SPAD value decreased while ion exudation increased. Cymbidium and Oncidium were resistant to sulfur dioxide gas than Phalaenopsis.

  • For the purpose of improving the UV sterilization for toothbrush, the sterilizing effects by the UV light were studied. When toothbrushes were treated with the UV light for 5, 15, 30, 60 minutes, the sufficient antibacterial effect were shown after 15 minutes with 80% of bactericidal effects. To prevent the brownish stain on the sterilizer which was caused by the long exposure of UV light, no UV treatment for two hours after 15 minutes exposure were scheduled and then 3 minutes re-exposure were performed, which showed 97% of bactericidal effect. Also, the antibacterial effects of the sterilizer showed different results depending on the position of the toothbrush, it was recommended to adjust toothbrush to be exposed by the UV light directly.

  • Recently. dyeing by harmless natural materials has received much attention due to the side-effects occurred from dyeing by synthetic dyes. In this study, we examined the effect of extracts of Pueraria thunbergiana (P. thunbergiana) roots, which are treated as natural products as well as agricultural wastes, on the hair dyeing by measuring dyeing interval, temperature, density changes, mordant and chromatic faction. The hair dyeing by the extracts significantly reduced hair damage and kept cuticle of hair softer than that by synthetic dyes. In addition, since a mordant is one of the necessary additives in dyeing, the role of a mordant was studied and concluded to be a supplementary substance based on the results that the hair dyeing by the extracts of P. thunbergiana roots alone was much darker than the others. Taken together, the data presented in this study suggest that the extracts of P. thunbergiana roots are is less damageable to hair and thus can be more safely applicable to hair dyes than that by synthetic dyes.

  • In this work, the post-treatment using organic acids during hair dyeing process was used to maintain hair color and to decrease hair damage. The effect of post-treatment using succinic acid and tartaric acid during hair dyeing process with cherry red and blue silver color on the persistence of hair color, tensile strength of hair, hair porosity, and surface characteristics of hair was investigated. After the repeated shampooing process, the experimental group with succinic acid and tartaric acid could more efficiently maintain the hair color than control group. The experimental group with succinic acid and tartaric acid could also increase the tensile strength of hair, decrease the hair porosity, and smoothen the hair surface, compared with control group. Particularly, tartaric acid was able to maintain the color of the dyed hair and protect the hair with higher efficiency than succinic acid.

  • Lignin degrading enzymes from Lentinula edodes have broad substrate specificities, and therefore can degrade a variety of recalcitrant compounds. In this study, the lignolytic biodegradation was investigated in five different L. edodes fungi (Chunbaegko, Sanjo 303ho, Poongnyunko, Baekhwahyang, and Soohyangko). The fungi were evaluated for their ability to decolorize Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR) in malt extract broth medium. Sanjo 303ho, Poongnyunko, Baekhwahyang, and Soohyangko rapidly decolorized RBBR within 7 days. The activities of manganese peroxidase (MnP) and laccase were determined in the absence and presence of lignin. Poongnyunko displayed the highest ligninolytic activity on day 7 of incubation (2,809 U/mg and 2,230 U/mg for MnP and laccase, respectively).

  • Curcuminoids in turmeric oleoresin (TO) are known to be effective antioxidants; they exhibit photosensitizing properties under light. In this study, the photoreactive properties of TO and its consequent induction of lipid peroxidation and cytotoxicity were evaluated. TO exhibited photosensitizing activities as evidenced by the reduction of nitro blue tetrazolium and by the decolorization of formazan under light, whereas light-irradiated TO did not enhance the levels of reactive oxygen species. The levels of hydroperoxide and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) were significantly elevated under a fluorescent light (10 W/m2) in corn, canola, and soybean oils containing 10-40 and 20-80 ㎍/mL of TO (p<0.05) but not in olive oil. Canola oil was the most sensitive to photo-oxidation induced by TO. The level of TBARS from linoleic acid in the oil in water system was, however, decreased by TO under light. The cytotoxicity effect of TO on melanoma cells was also substantially enhanced under light.
