Analysis of Carbon Emissions and Land Use Change for Low -Carbon Urban Management - Focused on Jinju (저탄소 도시관리를 위한 탄소배출과 토지이용변화 분석 -진주시를 중심으로-)

  • Low-carbon Green Growth is highlighted as the main political issue from in and outof Korea. Recently Korean government announced the vision for low-carbon green growth. Considering this as a starting point the carbon emission estimation has become an important factor in the city planning. In order to realize the carbon reduction planning, this research was focused on the trend analyzes between the carbon exhaust estimation as well as the land use change for the past 40 years in Jinju. The image processing data of past aerial photography and the land suitability assessment databases were used to collect the useful information's for the land trend analysis for 40 years. As the results, the land use changes by new residential developments have led to increase the carbon emissions and population concentration rapidly. The urban management planning for low carbon and green growth should consider carbon emissions by population growth derived from land use change. Further research need to estimate the accurate carbon exhaust using relationship model with fuel consumption, carbon estimation, and land use.

Effect of Attitudinal Factors on Stated Preference of Low-carbon Transportation Services (개인성향 요인이 탄소저감형 교통서비스 잠재선호에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • In response to the growing global concern for the environment, the international community has recently committed to achieving 'carbon neutrality.' As a result, numerous studies have been conducted on mode choice models that include carbon emissions as a variable. However, few studies have established a correlation between individual preferences and carbon emissions. In this study, a new mode of transportation named sustainable public transit (SPT), incorporating carbon-reducing transport options like electric scooters, is proposed. Analyzing the individual preferences of commuters on carbon emissions through factor analysis, a stated preference (SP) survey was conducted. A mode choice model for SPT was constructed using multinomial logit models. The results of the analysis showed that gender, income, and specific preferences, such as a passion for exploring new routes, a preference for intermodal transfers, knowledge of carbon reduction, and carbon reduction practices, significantly influence latent preferences for SPT. Therefore, this study is significant as it considers carbon emissions as an attribute variable during the construction of mode choice models and reflects the individual preference variables associated with carbon reduction.

An Analysis of Installation of Railway Construction Project Management System on Carbon Reduction (철도건설 사업관리시스템 도입에 따른 탄소저감 효과 분석)

  • In response to the global warming crisis, the Kyoto protocol was established by major developed countries in 1997. The Paris Agreement, which imposes a carbon reduction obligation for both developed countries and developing countries, was signed in 2015. Regulations and efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions accordingly have been implemented. In this study, we analyzed the reduction of carbon emissions computerizing of the traditional project management system for efficient railway construction at Korea Rail Network Authority. We suggest a model that measures two major effects of carbon reduction, stemming from transportation and from a decrease of paper use. In this paper, we calculate the amount of carbon reduction and the economic effect of carbon reduction with application of the construction project management system at Korea Rail Network Authority. The model and methodology in this study are expected to be helpful to measure the carbon reduction performance for similar e-transformation.

Contribution of Advanced or Alternative Process to Carbon-Dioxide Emission Reduction in Olefin Production Plant (올레핀(Olefin) 생산 공정에서 발생하는 이산화탄소 배출 저감을 위한 신기술 적용 효과)

  • Light olefins are very important hydrocarbons widely used as the raw materials of the most petrochemicals including plastics and medicines. In addition, the nation's olefin production capacity is regarded as one of the key indicators to predict the nation's economic scale and growth. Steam cracking of naphtha (or called "NCC (Naphtha Cracking Center) technology"), the traditional process to produce light olefins, is one of the most consuming energy processes among the chemical industries. Therefore, this process causes tremendous $CO_2$ emission. To reduce the energy consumption and $CO_2$ emission from NCC process, the present paper, firstly, investigates and analyses some alternative technologies which can be potentially substituted for traditional process. Secondly, applying the alternative technologies to NCC process, their effects such as energy savings, $CO_2$ emission reduction and CER (Certified Emission Reduction) were estimated. It is found that the advanced NCC process can reduce approximately 35% of SEC (Specific Energy Consumption) of traditional NCC process. This effect can lead to the reduction of 3.3 million tons of $CO_2$ and the acquisition of the 128 billion won of CER per year. Catalytic cracking of naphtha technology, which is other alternative processes, can save up to approximately 40% of SEC of traditional NCC process. This value equates to the 3.8 million tons of $CO_2$ mitigation and 147 billion won of CER per year.

Region-wide Road Transport CO2 Emission Inventory (지역단위 도로교통 탄소배출 인벤토리구축 방법론)

  • Due to its excessive $CO_2$ emissions, road transport sector becomes a target for emission reduction strategies. Although precise and reliable emissions inventories are necessary for evaluating plans and strategies, developing the region-wide inventory is a difficult task mainly because of a lack of data including travel patterns and modal volumes in the reginonal context. Most existing inventory methodologies employ fuel sale data within the target region, which ignores actual regional traffic patterns and thus not suited to its geographical context. To overcome these problems, this study develops region-wide $CO_2$ emissions inventory methodology by utilizing the Korea Transport DB (KTDB). KTDB provides a number of useful information and data, such as road network with which one can identify in and out trips over the entire region, traffic volumes of various modes, distance of travel, travel speed and so on. A model of equations that allow the computation of volume of $CO_2$ emitting from the road transport activities within the target region is developed. Using the model, numerical analyses are performed for the case of Busan Metropolitan City to demonstrate the applicability of the developed model. This study is indeed exploratory in the sense that using the existing data, it develops the $CO_2$ emissions inventory methodology which can produce better results than those from conventional fuel sales methodology. This study also suggests further reresarch directions to develop more refined methodologies in region-wide basis.
