In this study, the influence of carbon equivalents on friction welds of dissimilar steels was investigated. Four types of carbon steels with 10mm diameter were welded to a high-speed tool steel SKH 9. Main experimental results could be summarized as follows (1) Under constant friction pressure, the friction time increased almost linearly with the increasing burn-off length, while the forge length decreased almost linearly. (2) The maximum hardness in carbon steels increased almost linearly with the increasing carbon equivalent, but was much lower than that in the high speed steel. (3) After quenching and tempering of dissimilar steel friction welds, the hardness in carbon steel weldments became similar as that in the base metal, while the hardness in SKH 9 weld was still higher that of the base metal. (4) Relative movement in the friction phae occurred not at the interface of the weldments, but in the high speed steed steel near the interface. (5) For considered material combinations and welding parameters, most of fractures in tension and twisting tests occurred in the base metal. And welds with so high strength could produced in a wide range of welding parameters.
EAF dust generated from electric arc steelmaking process is classified as "hazardous" materials by tbe environmental regulation because of the existence of water leachable heavy metals such as Fe, Zn, Pb, and Cd. However, Fe and Zn among t the elements in the dust can be recovered to high valuable materials by applying a proper process. Therefore, in order to study t the possibility of recovery of iron from EAF dust, the effect oE carbon content and basicity, of synthesized EAF dust on the reduction rate of iron oxide was studied. Experimental results are as follows: TIle softening and melting temperature of the slag w was illcreased with increasing carbon addition amount [or carbon reduction eqUIvalent. At the carbon addition amount of 100% for carbon reduction equivalent and basicity of 1.7, reduction rate of $Fe_2O$ in the slag was the highest. The reaction order fur reduction of $Fe_2O$ by carbon was nearly first order.
New carbon equivalent equation for the better prediction for the better prediction of roll force in a continuous hot strip mill has been formulated by applying a neural network method. In predicting roll force of steel strip, carbon equivalent equation which normalize the effects of various alloying elements by a carbon equivalent content is very critical for the accurate prediction of roll force. To overcome the complex relationships between alloying elements and operational variables such as temperature, strain, strain rate and so forth, a neural network method which is effective for multi-variable analysis was adopted in the present work as a tool to determine a proper carbon equivalent equation. The application of newly formulated carbon equivalent equation has increased prediction accuracy of roll force significantly and the effectiveness of neural network method is well confirmed in this study.

In order to understand the microwave carbothermic reduction of steelmaking slag to recover Fe, the effects of gas atmosphere and carbon addition on the carbothermic reduction behavior of CaO-$SiO_2$-FeO slag were investigated. It was found that the maximum temperature and the reduction rate were higher in air than in nitrogen atmosphere. In addition, under air atmosphere, the maximum temperature and the reduction rate were increased by increasing the amount of additive carbon. When the carbon equivalent is 5, the maximum temperature reached as high as 1800K and the reduction rate was approximately 90%. As the Carbon equivalent increased further, the maximum temperature and the reduction rate did not change.

In reinforced concrete structures, the joints of ordinary rebars are usually lap joints, which are bound by binding wires with rebars, and mechanical joints by couplers. In domestic design standards (concrete design code), welded lap joints are restricted for ordinary rebars, but overseas standards allow welded lap joints of ordinary rebars through pre-heating. This study investigated the domestic and international standards/criteria and evaluated the fracture strength by performing the tensile test on the lap welded joint of SD400 grade rebars, which is used the most in the construction sites. The weld length of the specimen for weld lap joints is based on the minimum weld length (8d) given in the KS standard (KS B ISO 17660-1). According to AWS D1.4, the preheating temperature was set to $150^{\circ}C$ for D19 and below, and $260^{\circ}C$ for D22 and above. In the test results, the tensile strength of rebars with welded lap joints exceeded the required strength (125% of the yield strength) according to the concrete design code. To analyze the effect of preheating, the tensile strength of the welded rebars after preheating was not significantly different from that of the welded rebars without preheating. The carbon equivalent content (Ceq) of the rebars used in the test was 0.45% or less. Under AWS D1.4, no preheating is required if the carbon equivalent is less than 0.45%. All specimens with a welded lap length of 8d failed by a bar fracture. The effect of preheating was confirmed to be insignificant due to the low carbon equivalent of the rebar.
The study discussed in this paper investigated the material characteristics for the Thermo-Mechanical Control Process(TMCP) plates, which are controlled by several factors such as rolling, cold-stripping, cooling rate, and fixed carbon quantity. The suitability of thick TMCP steel plates as structural steel was also estimated through several experiments and with the us of a statistical method to analyze mill certificate sheets provided by the manufacturer. The results of this study are as follows: the TMCP steel plates showed stable values of the composition parameter ($P_cm$) and the carbon equivalents ($C_eq$ ) with satisfied yield strength, ultimate strength, and low-yield ratio.

Premixed combustion has many advantages, including low CO and NOx emissions and a small combustor volume. These characteristics allow a compact design and wide application to condensing boilers with high thermal efficiencies. This study focused on the combustion characteristics in a premixed combustion burner using metal fiber and a throttle body. The results showed that a blue flame was found to be very stable at a heating load of 6,250-25,000 kcal/h when implementing the proper metal fiber, baffle plate, and throttle body. The NOx emission was less than 11 ppm under an equivalence ratio of 0.724-0.795, and the CO emission was less than 50 ppm under the same equivalence ratio. The thermal efficiency, which is a very important index when condensing a gas boiler, was observed to be above 96.3% under an equivalence ratio of 0.750.

3-Aryl-3-bromopropanoyl chloride in either ether or carbon tetrachloride reacted with 2 equiv. of hydroxylamine in the absence of trimethylsilyl chloride at ambient temperature to give directly 2,5-diarylisoxazolidin-3-ones in good yields. However, when 3-benzylhydroxylamine at $0^{\circ}C$, N-benzyl-3-bromo-3-phenylpropanohydroxamic acid (72%) and N-benzyl-C-phenylnitrone (12%) were obtained. On the contrary, 3-phenylisoxazolidin-5-one (41%) and 2-benzyl-S-phenyl-isoxzolidin-3-one (38%) were obtained when 3 equiv. of benzylhydroxylamine was used under the same conditions.
