Application to Gas Sensors by Electron Emission from Carbon Nanotube Emitters (탄소나노튜브 전극으로부터 전계방출을 이용한 가스센서의 응용)

  • We fabricated gas sensors using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as electron emitters for the purpose of detecting inert gases. By using the silicon-glass anodic bonding and glass patterning technologies with the typical Si process, we improved the compactness of the sensors and the reliability in process. The proposed sensor, based on, an electrical discharge theory known as Paschen's law in principle, works by figuring the variation of the discharge current depending on gas concentration. In the experiment, the initial breakdown characteristics were measured for air and Ar as a function of gas pressure. As the result, even though it should be realized that there are many other factors which have an effect on the breakdown of a gap, the sensors led to similar result as predicted by Paschen's law, and they showed a possibility as gas sensors which enable to detect the gas density ranged to the vacuum pressure from 1 to $10^{-3}$ Torr.

Encapsulation of Fullerenes in Single-walled Carbon Nanotubes and their Characteristic Analysis by Raman Spectroscopy (단일벽 탄소나노튜브의 플러렌 캡슐화 및 라만분광 분석)

  • Single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) can be modified to produce a new concept of hybrid materials by introducing atoms or molecules inside their cylindrical empty space. Such an endohedral doping of the SWCNTs is expected to decisively alter their electronic transport and mechanical properties, In this study, we purified SWCNTs by three-step purification processes and formed the peapod structure by introducing $C_{60}$ fullerenes inside the SWCNTs. $C_{60}$ molecules were observed to be regularly arranged by transmission electron microscopy. In Raman spectra, the radial breathing mode (RBM) rather than the other modes was significantly affected by the endohedral injection of $C_{60}$. The RBM intensity was more greatly reduced in the large-diameter SWCNTs than the small-diameter ones, Raman spectroscopy is expected to be a key technique for analyzing $C_{60}$-encapsulated SWCNTs.

Field Emission Properties of Flat Lamp using Carbon Nanotubes Grownon Glass Substrate (유리기판 위에 성장된 탄소나노튜브를 이용한 평판 램프의 전계방출 특성)

  • We fabricated the 1-inch diode type flat lamp using CNTs, which were grown directly on soda-lime glass substrate at 600 ∼ 650 $^{\circ}C$ by thermal chemical vapor deposition(CVD) of acetylene gas. Turn- on field was about 2.8 V/${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. We observed that uniform and high brightness had been obtained. The brightness of CNT flat lamp was measured up to about 14 kcd/$m^2$ at 2000V in spacing of 500 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The results showed that the CNTs were very good emission source and suitable for application in the lamp.

Alcohol Gas Sensors using Spray-coated Carbon Nanotube Thin Film (스프레이 코팅된 탄소나노튜브 박막을 이용한 알코올 가스 센서)

  • We suggest a CNT-based gas sensor for breath alcohol measurement. The sensor was composed of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) thin film on flexible PES (polyethersulfone) substrate, and the SWCNTs thin film was formed by multiple spray-coating with SWCNTs solution which was well-dispersed, highly controlled and functionalized in ethanol solvent. In this work, three types of SWCNTs thin films were deposited with changes in the number of spray-coatings to 20, 40 and 60 times in order to compare electrical response properties of the SWCNTs thin films. from the fabricated sensors, conductance and capacitance responses were measured and discussed. Alcohol gas sensors have been commercialized widely as gauge for breath alcohol measurement which is applicable to checking whether car drivers are drinking-driving or not. Our alcohol gas sensors showed good sensitivity and linearity even at room temperature.

Hydrogen Bonding-Driven Assembling of Thin Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes (수소결합에 의한 얇은 다중벽 탄소나노튜브의 자기조립)

  • Here we describe the formation of a self-assembled film of thin multiwalled carbon Nanotubes(t-MWNT) modified with hydroxy groups through hydrogen peroxide treatment. Morphologies of t-MWNT films could be controlled by the various coating method, such as filtering, drop casting, spraying method, etc. The results show that on densification of the CNT suspension during drying, multiple hydroxy group-modified MWNTs can be self-assembled through strong surface hydrogen bond interaction while MWNTs usually exist an entangled state in the film. The interaction between t-MWNT was illustrated from Raman spectrum of spray coated films.

  • The effect of hydrogen and oxygen plasma treatments on the structural properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been systematically investigated. The plasma treatment resulted in the removal of the amorphous carbon particles. As the plasma treatment time was longer, the CNT diameter was reduced, regardless of gas types. Especially, for the sample treated in hydrogen plasma, the catalyst metal on the tip of CNTs was eliminated.

  • Singlewalled carbon nanotubes are largely synthesized on Fe-Mo/MgO catalysts by catalytic decomposition of CH4 in H2. Raman data revel that the as-prepared SWNTs have a diameter of about 0.7-1.2nm. It is found that the diameter of the as-prepared SWNTs can be controlled mainly by adjusting the molar ratio of Fe-MO versus the MgO support. The experimental results was documented with scanning electron microscopy(SEM), X-ray Diffractometer(XRD) and Raman spectroscopy.

  • To Smoothness of semiconducting materials in power cable, we have investigated those of semiconducting materials showed by changing the content of carbon black and Carbon Nanotube. Then they were produced as sheets after pressing for 20 minutes at $180^[{\circ}C]$ with a pressure of $200[kg/cm^2]$. The content of conductive carbon black and Carbon Nanotube was the variable, and their contents were 20-40[wt%] and 2-6[wt%] respectively. The smoothness was measured by JSM-6400.

  • Solubility of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) has been determined in various dispersing media by using the solvent parameters such as Kamlet-Taft parameter and 3-dimensional parameters. Nitric acid-treated SWNTs exhibit significantly improved solubility in hydrogen bondable solvents as well as in solvent mixtures. The forming bucky gel with ionic liquid allows for the new group of dissolving solvent. The dissolution behavior of SWNTs provides a route for SWNT dispersion/exfoliation in preparing electrically conductive films such as transparent electrode.

Electro-optic Characteristic of Twisted Nematic Mode using a Liquid Crystal Dispersed Carbon Nanotubes (탄소 나노 튜브가 분산된 액정을 이용한 TN 모드의 전기 광학 특성 연구)

  • We have fabricated twisted nematic (TN) cell doped by carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The CNTs with a minute amount of doping do not perturb the liquid crystal orientation in the off- and on-state. The hysteresis studies of voltage-dependent transmittance and capacitance under ac and dc electric field show that the amount of residual dc, which is related to image sticking problem in liquid crystal displays, is greatly reduced due to ion trapping by CNTs.
