Concrete structures exposed to fire produce changes in their internal structure, resulting in their service life reduction due to the deterioration of its strength and performance capacity. The deterioration level are dependent on the temperature, exposure time, concrete mix proportions, aggregate property, and material properties. This study was performed to evaluate the thermal behavior of ultra-high strength concrete for the parameters of water to cement ratio (compressive strength), fine to total aggregate ratio, and maximum coarse aggregate size. At room temperature and $500^{\circ}C$, tests of ultrasonic pulse velocity, resonance frequency, static modulus of elasticity, and compressive strength are performed using ${\varnothing}100{\times}200\;mm$ cylindrical concrete specimens. The results showed that the residual mechanical properties of ultra-high strength concrete heated to $500^{\circ}C$ is influenced by variation of a water to binder ratio, fine to total aggregate ratio, and maximum coarse aggregate size.
This paper focused on square steel tubular column to H-beam connections (concrete filled tubular) with an outside-type diaphragm. Based on the yield line theory and the nonlinear static FEM analysis the specification equations were evaluated by comparing them with previous result of the simplified tensile experiment[please check. The yield line theory applied to the mechanical model theory revised by K. Morita, the nonlinear static FEM analysis using abaqus/standard, the ultimate strength equation in the specification equation using the factor for long-time loading, and the yield ratio according to material. The allowable strength in the specification equations applied the safety factors of 2.2 and 2.6 in the cases with and without filled concrete, respectively. Therefore, the evaluation of strength(for the previous result of the simplified tensile experiment in this study) was considered possible through the yield line theory, the nonlinear static FEM analysis, and the specification equations. Likewise, the specification equations were seen to be an underestimate of the previous result of the simplified tensile experiment. The strength and displaced mesh in the FEM analysis approximated the previous result of the simplified tensile experiment.
Limit equilibrium methods of slope stability analysis have been widely adopted mainly due to their simplicity and applicability. However, the conventional methods may not give reliable and convincing results for various geological conditions such as nonhomogeneous and anisotropic soils. Also, they do not take into account soil slope history nor the initial state of stress, for example excavation or fill placement. In contrast to the limit equilibrium analysis, the analysis of deformation and stress distribution by finite element method can deal with the complex loading sequence and the growth of inelastic zone with time. This paper proposes a technique to determine the critical slip surface as well as to calculate the factor of safety for shallow failure on partially saturated soil slope. Based on the effective stress field in finite element analysis, all stresses are estimated at each Gaussian point of elements. The search strategy for a noncircular critical slip surface along weak points is appropriate for rainfall-induced shallow slope failure. The change of unit weight by seepage force has an effect on the horizontal and vertical displacements on the soil slope. The Drucker-Prager failure criterion was adopted for stress-strain relation to calculate coupling hydraulic and mechanical behavior of the partially saturated soil slope.
This study is focused on the analysis of tunnel behavior to estimate the stability on tunnel design. An estimation method was proposed as a hybrid consideration, which contains the displacement analysis by 3D numerical simulation, the maximum displacement obtained after field measurement, and an assessment of tunnel stability using a deformation analysis proposed by Sakurai(1988, 1997). The points of case study by Sakurai(1988, 1997) were replotted considering his analysis. From the new analysis of the tunnel case study, the trend line for analyzed points is analogized, which curve is divided into stable, unstable and failure zone. To evaluate the estimation method, a special shape of railway tunnel was selected, which are the Inchon international airport rail way connected to subway line 9 in Gimpo, Korea. The point s of upper and below track on the Inchon international airport rail way were satisfied to the stability of tunnel after reinforcing. Also the points shows the higher apparent Young's modulus, which resulted from improvement on shear strength by the micro silica grouting and the supporting of umbrella method. Therefore, if new analysis used, proper tunnel reinforcing method could be selected according to tunnel strain and geological property.
The particle size of microfine cement(MC) is so small that it can be injected into silt layer. But the more particle size is miniaturized, the more the cohesion increases. This phenomenon results in the decrease of the perviousness of MC. In this study, the grouting effects of microfine cement with superplasticizer to maintain cohesion low and that of normal cement were investigated in rock. To estimate the grouting effects, TCR/RQD test for rock quality, lugeon test, borehole loading test for coefficients of elastic and deformative stress, borehole shear test for shear stress, detection p~q~t(pressure~flow~time) chart tests were carried out. The results using MC show a better permeability, modulus of elasticity, deformation, charge per unit, and recover efficiency of grouting material than those of ordinary portland cement except shear stress.
We designed bearingless rotor hub system which replace mechanical hinge/bearing with composite beam component and conducted fatigue analysis for flexbeam and torque tube. Extension/bending/torsional stiffness was calculated from 2D section analysis using VABS and 2D section structure analysis was applied for strain calculation. S-N curve of each composite material was generated using Wohler equation and fatigue analysis was conducted on weakness section which was decided from static structure analysis. CAMRAD II was used for load analysis and load analysis result was applied HELIX/FELIX standard load spectrum to generate bearingless rotor system load spectrum which was used fatigue safe life analysis.
In this study, crosslinked poly(POEM-co-AMPSLi-co-GMA)s were prepared by epoxy coupling of GMA after radical copolymerization of AMPS, POEM and GMA followed by acid-base titration reaction between sulfonic acid of AMPS and $Li_2CO_3$. It was observed that the crystalline melting temperature of POEM was effected by mol% of components and shifted to lower value by lithiation of AMPS group. The ionic conductivity of crosslinked polymer electrolyte was decreased by addition of GMA but maintained over $1.0{\times}10^{-6}S\;cm^{-1}$ until 16 mol%. Particularly, the self-doped polymer electrolyte with 2 mol% of GMA showed its ionic conductivity as high as $4.08{\times}10^{-6}S\;cm^{-1}$ at room temperature and electrochemical stability up to 6 V. In addition, 0.11 MPa of modulus and 270% of elongation were obtained from the free standing film of crosslinked polymer electrolyte.
Present investigation shows the analysis results for ceramic reinforced metal matrix composite under uniaxial transverse tensile loading. The resulting deformation, the projected damage type, and stress-strain behavior were computed depending on microstructure details such as the type of periodic reinforcement array, and the type of interface bonding. A two-dimensional finite element analysis was conducted based on the unit-cell of square, hexagonal, or diagonal periodic away For composite with strong interface bonding, the transverse stress vs. strain curve was generally increased with the increase of the ceramic volume fraction. For the composite with weakly bonded interface, however, the transverse stress vs. strain curve was reduced against the ceramic volume fraction. The decrease was caused by the interface debonding-induced stiffness reduction of the composite. For the composite of weakly bonded interface, the relative reduction rate in the final limit stress for hexagonal array was larger than that for square array. Outcome of the present study was compared favorably with the published literature data.
Jurassic granite from Pocheon area were tested to investigate the effect of microcracks on mechanical properties of the granite. Three oriented core specimens were used for uniaxial compressive tests and each core specimen are perpendicular to the axes'R'(rift plane),'c'(grain plane) and'H'(hardway plane), respectively Among vacious elastic constants, the variation of Poisson's ratio as function of the directions was examined. From the related chart between ratio of failure strength and Poisson's ratio, H-specimen shows the highest range in Poisson's ratio and Poisson's ratio decreases in the order of C-specimen and R-specimen. The curve pattern is nearly linear in stage $I\simIII$ but the slope increases abruptly in stage H-3. As shown in the related chart, diverging point of a curve is formed when ratio of failure strength is $0.92\sim0.96$ Stage IV -3 is out of elastic region. The behaviour of rock in the four fracturing stages was analyzed in term of the stress-volumetric strain me. From the stress increment-volumetric strain equations governing the behaviour of rock, characteristic material constants, a, n, Q, m and $\varepsilon_v^{mcf}$, were determined. Among these, inherent microcrack porosity$(a, 10^{-3})$ and compaction exponent(n) in the microcrack closure region(stage I ) show an order of $a^R(3.82)>a^G(3.38)>a^H(2.32)\;and\;n^R(3.69)>n^G(2.79)>n^H(1.99)4, respectively. Especially, critical volumetric microcrack strain($\varepsilon_v^{mcf}$) in the stage W is highest in the H-specimen, normal to the hardway plane. These results indicate a strong correlation between two major sets of microcracks and mechanical properties such as Poisson's ratio and material constants. Correlation of strength anisotropy with microcrack orientation can have important application in rock fracture studies.
The objective of the research stated herein is to observe the actual responses of a low-rise nonseismic moment-resisting reinforced concrete frame subjected to varied levels of earthquake ground motions. First, the reduction scale for the model was determined as 1 : 5 considering the capacity of the shaking table to be used and the model was manufactured according to the similitude law. This model was, then, subjected to the shaking table motions simulating Taft N21E component earthquake ground motions, whose peak ground accelations (PGAs) were modified to 0.12g, 0.2g, 0.3g, and 0.4g. The lateral accelerations and displacements at each story and local deformations at the critical reginos of the structure were measured. The base shear was measured by using self-made load cells. Before and after each earthquake simulation test, free vibration tests were performed to find the change in the natural period and damping ratio of the model. The test data on the global and local behaviors are interpreted. The model showed the linear elastic behavior under the Taft N21E motion with the PGA if 0.12g, which represents the design earthquake in Korea. The maximum base shear was 1.8tf, approximately 4.7 times the design base shear. The model revealed fairly good resistance to the higher level of earthquake simulation tests. The main components of its resistance to the high level of earthquakes appeared to be 1) the high overstrength, 2) the elongation of the fundamental period, and 3) the minor energy dissipation by inelastic deformations. The drifts of the model under these tests were approximately within the allowable limit.
