  • The method of photoelasticity allows one to obtain principal stress differences and principal stress directions in a photoelastic model. In the classical approach, the photoelastic parameters are measured manually point by point. The previous methods require much time and skill in the identification and measurement of photoelastic data. Fringe phase shifting method has been recently developed and widely used to measure and analyze fringe data in photo-mechanics. This paper presents the test results of photoelastic fringe phase shifting technique for the stress analysis of a circular disk under compression and an edge-cracked plate subjected to tensile load. The technique used here requires four phase stepped photoelastic images obtained from a circular polariscope by rotating the analyzer at $0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$ and $135^{\circ}$. Experimental results are compared with those or FEM. Good agreement between the results can be observed. However, some error may be included if the technique is used to general direction which is not parallel to isoclinic fringe.

  • The simplified plate theory is presented for static and free vibration analysis of power-law(P) and sigmoid(S) Functionally Graded Materials(FGM) plates. This theory considers the parabolic distribution of the transverse shear stress, and satisfies the condition that requires the transverse shear stress to be zero on the upper and lower surfaces of the plate, without the shear correction factor. The simplified plate theory uses only four unknown variables and shares strong similarities with classical plate theory(CPT) in many aspects such as stress-resultant expressions, equation of motion and boundary conditions. The material properties of the plate are assumed to vary according to the power-law and sigmoid distributions of the volume fractions of the constituents. The Hamilton's principle is used to derive the equations of motion and Winkler-Pasternak elastic foundation model is employed. The results of static and dynamic responses for a simply supported FGM plate are calculated and a comparative analysis is carried out. The results of the comparative analysis with the solutions of references show relevant and accurate results for static and free vibration problems of FGM plates. Analytical solutions for the static and free vibration problems are presented so as to reveal the effects of the power law index, elastic foundation parameter, and side-to-thickness ratio.

  • A powerful analytical procedure and strain energy analysis to investigate the free vibration of antisymmetric angle-ply laminated plates, having one pair of opposite edges simply supported, are develped on the basis of the Yang, Norris and Stavsky (YSN) theory. The equation of motion of the plate are solved by the use of collocation method. A range of results are presented for plates to show the effects of modulus ratio and number of layers on natural frequency. In addition, an analysis of the strain energy distributions is used as an aid for the better understanding of the vibration characteristics of the plates.

  • This paper presents a simplified analysis method using the elastic equivalent modelling not using the global finite element modelling of deck for the basic design GFRP composites deck with cellular tubes or sandwich structural type. In order to verify the validation of the simplified method ANSYS software package is used and compared the results analyzed on the global finite element modelling and the elastic equivalent modelling. And the laboratory testing by 4-point bending is conducted to compare the results based on the simplified analysis method proposed in this paper. The comparison of the results based on the analysis and the testing are discussed. It is found that the presented simplified analysis is applicable to the use in the basic design GFRP composite deck.

  • This research analyzes eigenvalue analysis of stiffened plates on the Pasternak foundations using the finite clement method. For analyzing the stiffened plates, both the Mindlin plate theory and Timoshenko beam-column theory were applied. In application of the finite element method, 8-nodes serendipity clement system and 3-nodes finite element system were used for plate and beam elements, respectively. Elastic foundations were modeled as the Pasternak foundations in which the continuity effect of foundations is considered. In order to verify the theory of this study, solutions obtained by this analysis were compared with the classical solutions in reference, experimental solutions and solutions obtained by SAP 2000. The natural frequency of stiffened plates on Pasternak foundations were determined according to changes or foundation parameters and dimensions of stiffener.

  • We predict the rolled-strip profile for a 6-high mill using thin rolling theory and a numerical model. In the numerical model, we calculate the distributions of the contact pressures between the rolls and the rolling pressure between the strip and the work roll in the transverse direction using the geometric structure of the 6-high mill and the boundary conditions. We determine the distribution of the rolling pressure in the rolling direction via a thin-foil rolling model using Fleck's theory. We calculate the three-dimensional elastic deformation of the work roll using the pressures of the width and rolling directions. We then obtain the three-dimensional strip profile via the elastic deformation of the work roll during the rolling process. The profile is verified by a thin cold-rolling test and FE simulation.

  • This article presents the dynamic response of nano-scale plates using the nonlocal continuum theory and higher-order shear deformation theory. The nonlocal elasticity of Eringen has ability to capture the small scale effects and the higher-order shear deformation theory has ability to capture the quadratic variation of shear strain and consequently shear stress through the plate thickness. The solutions of transient dynamic analysis of nano-scale plate are presented using these theories to illustrate the effect of nonlocal theory on dynamic response of the nano-scale plates. The relations between nonlocal and local theories are discussed by numerical results. Also, the effects of nonlocal parameters, aspect ratio, side-to-thickness ratio, size of nano-scale plate and time step on dynamic response are investigated and discussed. The amplitude and cycle increase when nonlocal parameter increase. In order to validate the present solutions, the reference solutions are used and discussed. The theoretical development as well as numerical solutions presented herein should serve as reference for nonlocal theories as applied to the transient dynamic analysis of nano-scale structures.

  • In the glulam beam deflection it is necessary to check the reliability of theory formula, because of wood anisotropy and wood qualities (knot, slop of grain). In this experiment, when bending stress occurred on glulam, practice deflection of glulam measuring with AICON DPA-Pro 3D system were compared with prediction deflection calculated as substituting MOE through non-destructive testing and static MOE through bending test in differential equation of deflection curve. MOE using ultrasonic wave tester of laminae, MOE using natural frequencies of longitudinal vibrations ($E_{cu}$, $E_{cf}$), MOE using ultrasonic wave tester of glulam ($E_{gu}$) and MOE using natural frequencies of longitudinal vibrations ($E_{gf}$) were substituted in this experiment. When practice deflection measured by 3D system was compared with prediction deflection calculated with differential equation of deflection curve, within proportional limit the ratio of practice deflection and prediction deflection was similar as 1.12 and 1.14, respectively. Deflection using ultrasonic wave tester was 0.89 and 0.95, Deflection using natural frequencies of longitudinal vibrations was 1.07 and 1.10. The results showed that prediction deflection calculated by substituting using non-destructive MOE of glulam having anisotropy in differential equation of deflection curve was agreed well with practice deflection.
