We had conducted a numerical modeling to investigate seismic properties of gas hydrate with field parameters acquired over the East sea in 1998. We used a 2-D staggered grid finite difference method to generate synthetic elastic seismograms for multi-channel seismic survey, OBC (Ocean Bottom Cable) survey and VCS (Vertical Cable Seismic) survey. The results of this study showed that the method using staggered grid yielded stable results and could be used to seismic imaging. We could find out the high amplitude anomaly and the phase reversal phenomenon of reflection wave at interface between the gas hydrate layer and free gas layer such a BSR (Bottom Simulating Reflector) which is the evidence for existence of gas hydrate in seismic reflection data. And we computed the reflection coefficients at the incident angles corresponding to offset distance with the synthetic seismograms. The reflection coefficients acquired from the numerical modeling were nearly consistent with the reflection coefficient computed by Shuey's equation.
In the main target area of the block II, Targe-scale faults occur below the unconformity developed around 1 km in depth. The contrast of seismic velocity around the unconformity is generally so large that the strong multiples and the radical velocity variation would deteriorate the quality of migrated section due to serious distortion. More than 15 kinds of data processing techniques have been applied to improve the image resolution for the structures farmed from this active crustal activity. The bad and noisy traces were edited on the common shot gathers in the first step to get rid of acquisition problems which could take place from unfavorable conditions such as climatic change during data acquisition. Correction of amplitude attenuation caused from spherical divergence and inelastic attenuation has been also applied. Mild F/K filter was used to attenuate coherent noise such as guided waves and side scatters. Predictive deconvolution has been applied before stacking to remove peg-leg multiples and water reverberations. The velocity analysis process was conducted at every 2 km interval to analyze migration velocity, and it was iterated to get the high fidelity image. The strum noise caused from streamer was completely removed by applying predictive deconvolution in time space and ${\tau}-P$ domain. Residual multiples caused from thin layer or water bottom were eliminated through parabolic radon transform demultiple process. The migration using curved ray Kirchhoff-style algorithm has been applied to stack data. The velocity obtained after several iteration approach for MVA (migration velocity analysis) was used instead or DMO for the migration velocity. Using various testing methods, optimum seismic processing parameter can be obtained for structural and stratigraphic interpretation in the Block II, Yellow Sea Basin.
In this study, a software for crosswell seismic tomography is developed. The software consists of first arrival picking and adjusting module, crosswell traveltime tomography module, and imaging module. This software allows saying the picked first arrival times into the header of seismic data, and using this data directly to the input of crosswell seismic tomography. With an imaging module, velocity structures and ray path can be imaged directly from the output of the tomography module. Because it is developed on the basis of the SU under the Linux and the GUI environment for user, this software can be carried out directly the first arrival picking, inversion and tomogram for crosswell tomography data in the field. Therefore, this software can be improved the applicability of site investigation by tomography method.
To characterize virtual reflection images of deep subsurface by the method of seismic interferometry, we analyzed effects of offset range, ambient noise, missing data, and statics on interferograms. For the analyses, seismic energy was simulated to be generated by a 5 Hz point source at the surface. Vertical components of particle velocity were computed at 201 sensor locations at 100 m depths of 1 km intervals by the finite difference method. Each pair of synthetic seismic traces was cross-correlated to generate stacked reflection section by the conventional processing method. Wide-angle reflection problems in reflection interferometry can be minimized by setting a maximum offset range. Ambient noise, missing data, and statics turn to yield processing noise that spreads out from virtual sources due to stretch mutes during normal moveout corrections. The level of processing noise is most sensitive to amplitude and duration time of ambient noise in stacked sections but also affected by number of missing data and the amount of statics.

For the last several decades, high-resolution shallow marine seismic technique has been used for various resources, engineering and geological surveys. Even though the multichannel method is powerful to image subsurface structures, single channel analog survey has been more frequently employed in shallow water exploration, because it is more expedient and economical. To improve the quality of the high-resolution seismic data economically, we acquired digital seismic data using a small air gun, 6 channel streamer and PC-based system, performed data processing and produced high-resolution seismic sections. For many years, such test acquisitions were performed with other studies which have different purposes in the area of off Pohang, Yellow Sea and Gyeonggi-bay. Basic data processing was applied to the acquired data and the processing sequence included gain recovery, deconvolution, filtering, normal moveout, static corrections, CMP gathering and stacking. Examples of digitally processed sections were shown and compared with analog sections. Digital seismic sections have a much higher resolution after data processing. The results of acquisition and processing show that the high-resolution shallow marine seismic surveys using a small air gun, 6 channel streamer and PC-based system may be an effective way to image shallow subsurface structures precisely.
A difficulty encountered in engineering seismic mapping is that reflection events from shallow discontinuities are commonly overlapped with coherent noise such as air wave, direct waves, head waves, and high-amplitude surface waves. Here, the radial trace transform, a simple geometric re-mapping of a trace gather (x-t domain) to another trace gather (v-t domain), is applied to investigate the rejection effect of coherent linear noises. Two different types of data sets were selected as a representative database: good-quality data for intermediate sounding (hundreds of meters) in a sedimentary basin and very noisy data for shallow (${\leq}50m$) mapping of the weathered zone and bedrock surface. Results obtained with cascaded application of the radial transform and low-cut filtering proved to be as good as, or better than, those produced using f-k filtering, and were especially effective for air wave and direct wave. This simple transform enables better understanding of the characteristics of various types of noise in the RT domain, and can be generally applied to overcoming diffractions and back-scatterings caused by joints, fractures, and faults commonly that are encountered in geotechnical problems.
In order to obtain high-quality high-resolution marine seismic data, the survey needs to be carried out at very low-sea condition. However, the survey is often performed with a slight wave, which degrades the quality of data. In this case, it is possible to improve the quality of seismic data by detecting the exact location of the sea bottom signal and eliminating the influence of waves or swells automatically during data processing. However, if noise is included or the sea bottom signal is weakened due to sea waves, sea bottom detection errors are likely to occur. In this study, we applied a method reducing such errors by estimating the sea bottom location, setting a narrow detection range and detecting the sea bottom location within this range. The expected location of the sea bottom was calculated using previously detected sea bottom locations for each channel of multi-channel data. The expected location calculated in each channel is also compared and verified with expected locations of other channels in a shot gather. As a result of applying this method to the noisy 8-channel high-resolution air-gun seismic data acquired off Yeosu, the errors in selecting the strong noise before sea bottom or the strong subsurface reflected signal after the sea bottom signal are remarkably reduced and it is possible to produce the high-quality seismic section with the correction of ~ 2.5 m swell effect.
Considering importance and specificity, site investigations for deep geological disposal of Spent Nuclear Fuel require stringent quality control, unlike general geotechnical investigations for tunnels and bridges. In this study, we present a case of selecting geophysical survey method for individual site investigation stage and preparing geophysical survey guideline. The proposed geophysical survey guidelines include procedures, considerations, and quality control for exploration planning, data acquisition, data processing, and interpretation. They comprehensively summarize the contents of airborne electromagnetic survey and seismic reflection survey.
Stacking in seismic processing plays an important role in improving signal-to-noise ratio and imaging quality of seismic data. However, the conventional stacking method doesn't remove random noises with various distributions and outliers up to a satisfactory level. This paper introduces a robust and optimum weighted stack method which shows both robustness to outlier noises and optimum in removing random noises. This was achieved by combining the robust median stacking with the optimum weighted stacking using local correlation. Application of the method to synthetic data showed that the proposed method is very effective in suppressing random noises with various distributions including outliers.
