  • The effects of Reynolds number of model propeller leading edge roughness and air content resolved in tunnel water on cavitation inception, cavitation extent and pressure fluctuation were investigated experimentally by using two model propellers in a cavitation tunnel. Cavitation observation and propeller induced fluctuating pressure measured in the present model test were compared with the model test results of other research institutes and the full-scale data of a German container ship(Sydney Express). The comparison shows a reasonable agreement.

  • The increasing size and speed of cargo ships result in high speed flow in propeller slipstream, and thereby cavitation is frequently observed on and around a rudder system. Rudder gap cavitation is the most difficult one to control and suppress among various types of the cavitation on a rudder system. In the present study, experiments of the incipient cavitation and pressure measurement were carried out for typical cargo ship rudder sections with and without the suppression devices, which were suggested by the authors. Fundamental understanding of the rudder gap cavitation inception was obtained along with its relevance to the surface pressure distribution. It is confirmed that the gap flow blocking devices effectively suppress the rudder gap cavitation and, at the same time, augment lift.

  • Hull-propeller-rudder interactions are studied by the iterative computational procedures. Hull effects on the propeller are reflected through the effective velocities computed by the vortex ring method which used the measured nominal wake as input data. A potential based panel method has been developed to solve the propeller-rudder interactions using the obtained effective velocities. Steady flow characteristics around the rudder surface can be obtained by computing the induced velocities on the rudder by the propeller and vice versa are computed by the iterative manner until the converged solutions are obtained. Flow characteristics around the propeller and the rudder are measured by Laser Doppler Velocimetry(L.D.V.) in large cavitation tunnel at Samsung Heavy industries. The gap flow model is adopted to solve the characteristics of the horn rudder. Numerical results are compared with the experimental values and the computed velocity fields and pressure distributions with rudder angle on the horn rudder surface show good agreement with measured ones in large cavitation tunnel.

  • With the increase of ship size and speed, the loading on the propeller is increasing, which in turn increases the rotational speed in the propeller slipstream. The rudder placed in the propeller slip stream is therefore subject to severe cavitation with the increased angle of attack due to the increased rotational induction speed of the propeller. In the present paper the surface panel method, which has been proved useful in predicting the sheet cavitation on the propeller blade, is applied to solve the cavity boundary value problem on the rudder. The problem is then solved numerically by discretizing the rudder and cavity surface elements of the quadrilateral panels with constant strengths of sources and dipoles. The strengths of the singularities are determined satisfying the boundary conditions on the rudder and cavity surfaces. The extent of the cavity, which is unknown a priori, is determined by iterative procedure. Series of numerical experiments are performed increasing the degree of complexity of the rudder geometry and oncoming flows from the simple hydrofoil case to the real rudder in the circumferentially averaged propeller slipstream. Numerical results are presented with experimental results.

  • In the present study, a method of performing cavitation erosion test directly on the anodized surface of the rudder model is proposed, not applying ink or paint on its surface. An image processing technique is newly developed to quantitatively evaluate the erosion damages on the rudder model surface after erosion test. The preprocessing saturation image, image smoothing, adaptive hysteresis thresholding and eroded area detection algorithms are in the image processing program. The rudder cavitation erosion tests are conducted in the rudder deflection angle range of 0° to -4°, which is used to maintain a straight course at the highest speed of the targeted navy ship. In the case of the conventional flat-type full-spade rudder currently being used in the target ship, surface erosion can occur on the model rudder surface in the above rudder deflection angle range. The bubble type of cavitation occurs on rudder surface, which is estimated to be the main reason of erosion damage on the rudder surface.

  • In order to improve cavitation characteristics for a high-speed propeller, leading edge shape of a 2-D hydrofoil is investigated numerically and experimentally. For flowfield analysis around the leading edge, the incompressible Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equation is solved using the standard $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model and a finite volume method(FVM). The cavitation thickness, which is occurred on hydrofoil surface, is predicted using the panel code. It is shown that the calculation codes predict the experimental trend fairly well. From these results, new hydrofoils are designed

  • In order to investigate force and cavitation characteristics for the flat & twisted rudders in the Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT), the rudder dynamometer was designed and manufactured. The measuring capacities of lift, drag and moment are ±1000 N, ±2000 N, and ±150 N-m, respectively. The present dynamometer uses the actuator with a harmonic drive to control the rudder angle without backlash. As the target ship is a military ship with twin shaft, each dynamometer was installed above the port & starboard rudders. After the installation of the model ship with all appendages, the model test composed of rudder force measurement and cavitation observation was conducted for the existing flat rudder & the designed twisted rudder. While the flat rudder showed the big difference of lift & moment between port & starboard, the twisted rudder presented a similar trend. The cavitation of the twisted rudder showed better characteristics than that of the flat rudder. Another set of model tests were conducted to investigate rudder performance by the change of the design propeller. There was little difference in rudder performance for the design propellers with slight geometric change. Through the model test, the characteristics of the flat & twisted rudders were grasped. On the basis of the present study, it is thought that the rudder with better performance would be developed.

  • Cavitation related erosion damages on semi-spade rudder generally occur at around leading edge of lower-face and behind gap of lower pintle. To get the idea of gap entrance profile for the latter case, a series of tests with large models has been carried out at MOERI. In the tests, the flow pattern around lower pintle have been investigated and visualized by high speed camera. Additionally, cavitation inception tests and pressure measurements have also been conducted for better comparison. As a result a new model (F rudder) has been developed. The new model turned out to have stable pressure distribution along the surface and so the cavitation inception speeds within ${\pm}5^{\circ}$ of rudder angle were delayed approx. 4 knots in average.

  • In the present study, the influences on the gap cavitaiton of the semi-spade rudder are investigated experimentally in the condition with propeller and hull wakes. To reduce the scale effect in the given experimental conditions, 1/28.5-scale-down models of propeller and rudder are manufactured. We have the propeller rotate ahead of the rudder, inducing the three dimensional effects originated from the propeller action. Experimental methods are composed of the cavitation observation using high speed camera, PIV (particle image velocimetry) measurements to visualize the cavitaition and flows around the gap. The propeller slipstream affects both of the gap flows and cavitation of the rudder.
