  • In order to investigate the influence of installation angle of reticulated root piles(RRP) on their lateral load capacities, model tests of lateral loads on RRP with various installation angles $0^{\circ}\;, 5^{\circ}\;, 10^{\circ}\;, 15^{\circ}\;, 20^{\circ}\;,and 25^{\circ}$ are carried out. One set of RRP consists of 12 piles which are installed in circular patterns forming two concentric circles, each of which has 6 piles. Each pile made of a steel bar of 5mm in diameter and 350mm in length, is coated with sand until the bar has the diameter of 6.5mm. According to the test results, RRP's response is travily influenced by the displacement level. At low displacement level(1m), lateral load capacity increases as the installation angle is increased. However, the value of the optimum installation angle decreases as the displacement level is increased. In fact, it is found to be $17.5^{\circ}$ at 6mm lateral displacement. The ratios of the lateral resistances for the optimum installation angles to those for the vertical RRP decrease as the lateral displacements are increased. Thus the effect of slant ins angle of RRP is expected to be reduced at higher level of lateral displacement.

  • The compressive strength of concrete is used as the most basic and important material Property when reinforced concrete structures are designed. It has become a problem to use this value, however, because the control specimen sizes and shapes are different from every country. In this study, the effect of specimen sizes and shapes on compressive strength of concrete specimens was experimentally investigated based on fracture mechanics. Experiments for the Mode I failure was carried out by using cylinder, cube, and prism specimens. The test results are curve fitted using least square method(LSM) to obtain the new parameters for the modified size effect law(MSEL). The analysis results show that the effect of specimen sizes and shapes on ultimate strength is apparent. In addition, correlations between compressive strengths with size, shape, and casting direction of the specimen are investigated. For cubes and prisms the effect of placing direction on the compressive strength was investigated.

  • The temperature patterns in Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements were measured and comprehensively analyzed from the beginning of the concrete placement based on the temperature measurement technique developed using innovative and inexpensive temperature measurement sensors. The temperature measurements in PCC pavements were taken at several different locations forvarious slab thicknesses. The concrete temperature patterns in the vertical and longitudinal directions of the pavement were analyzed and the effects of the pavement surface reflectivity, shading, and covering on the concrete temperatures were evaluated. The results of this study showed that the significant differences in the maximum concrete temperatures on the placement day were observed according to the concrete placement time. Since the zero-stress temperature is a function of the maximum concrete temperature on the placement day, the placement time would be an important factor that affects the behavior and performance of concrete pavements. The surface conditions of the pavement, such as the surface color, shading, and covering also affected the temperature patterns in PCC pavements significantly.

  • This study is aimed at controlling the fiber orientation and improve the fiber distribution in fiber-reinforced cement composites using blades that can be placed inside the existing nozzles. To optimize the blade parameters, multi-physics finite element analysis was performed that could account for the flow of the cementitious matrix material, the movement of the entrained fibers, and the interactions with the nozzle. As a result, this study defined the blade distance, length, and position as a function of the fiber length to be used in the field. The blades with a distance from 1.2 to 2.4 times the fiber length and length from 4 to 8 times the fiber length, as well as located at below 14 times the fzfiber length from the nozzle exit maintained the fiber orientation angle less than $5^{\circ}$. In addition, the blade-type nozzle proposed in the study can be attachable and detachable to the conventional casting equipment, and thus it can provide the usability and convenience in practical applications.

  • Recently several researches have been conducted to develop sliding track system in which friction between concrete track and bridge slab has been reduced. This paper investigated shear load carrying capacity of lateral supporting concrete block which should be implemented to resist lateral load due to train in sliding track system. In order to evaluate shear load carrying capacity of lateral supporting concrete block, analytical model has been developed considering concrete friction and rebar dowel action along construction joint. The proposed model predicted test results on the shear load carrying capacity from literature conservatively by 13~23% because effect of aggregate interlock along crack surface was neglected. Since construction joint status is ambiguous on construction site, it can be concluded that the proposed model can be used for reasonable design of lateral supporting concrete block. Based on the proposed model, design proposal for lateral supporting concrete block has been established.

  • Several techniques, including transmission X-ray photography and AC-impedance spectroscopy, are available for evaluating the fiber dispersion in a fiber reinforced concrete Evaluating the fiber dispersion in fiber reinfored concrete needs since the fibers bridge crackseffectively. However, these equipment is very expensive. Therefore this paper presents the quantitative evaluation method based on the image analysis of sectional image taken using an ordinary digital camera. After detecting the fiber accurately, the fiber dispersion characteristics are represented by the coefficient such as the fiber dispersion coefficient, the number of fibers in unit area, and the distribution of the fiber orientation. Test were performed to evaluate the effectiveness of proposed method and the dispersion characteristics of fibers according placing method and flow direction. Additionally, the effect of fiber dispersion characteristics on mechanical properties was investigated. Test results shows that fiber aligned along the flow direction and more fibers placed and dispersion was better on the section parallel to the flow direction. And about 50% difference in the flexural tensile strength according to the placing method occured.

  • This study deals with behavior of steel box girder bridges according to the concrete slab casting sequences and sectional types. The time dependent behavior of bridges caused by the differential setting of slab concrete resulting from time gap for each part of slab deck in a sequential placing method produces is analyzed. In correlation studies between girder section types and placing sequences, time dependent effects of concrete creep and shrinkage are implemented in the analytical model proposed in the previous study. Finally, field recommendations in terms of concrete slump and relative humidity are suggested to prevent early transverse cracking of concrete slabs.

  • This paper deals with the prediction of behavior of composite girder bridges according to the placing sequences of concrete deck. Based on a degenerate kernel of compliance function in the form of Dirichlet series, the time-dependent behaviors of bridges are simulated, and the layer approach is adopted to determine the equilibrium condition in a section. The variation of bending moments along the bridge length caused by the slab casting sequence is reviewed and correlation studies between section types and placing sequences are conducted with the objective to establish the validity of the continuous placing of concrete deck on the closed steel box-girder which is broadly used in practice.

  • The effects of external restraint on the thermal stresses i n mass concrete are investigated through a series of parametric study. Two major factors affecting the degree of external restraint such as the ratio of length to height of the placed structure (L/H) and the elastic modulus of base structure ($E_r$) are employed as the parameters in a condition which a placing height H is 1.0m. Various conditions of I,/H and E, are analysed by a FEM program and the relationship between these two parameters is examined. The shape of stress distribution due to the external restraint is shown as linearity on the height direction of the section, and is influenced by L/H, $E_r$, and strength development of placed concrete. The external restraint can be devided by two part. One is an axial restraint and the other is a flexural restraint. When the level of external restraint is low, the structure behavior is mainly governed by flexural restraint, otherwise it is dependent on axial restraint. Comparing the calculated stress by the method of the ACI 207 committee with a finite element analysis, the fbrmer overestimates the external restraint stress when the degree of external restraint is weak, and underestimates when it is strong.
