Measurement and Analysis of Clutter Loss in Urban/Suburban below 24 GHz (24 GHz 이하 도심/부도심의 클러터 손실 측정 및 분석)

  • Recently, measurements on clutter loss due to buildings in urban/suburban areas at 3, 6, 10, 18, and 24 GHz have been performed by the Radio Research Agency with the purpose of predicting the clutter loss close to actual urban/suburban propagation for 5G mobile communication. In this work, we have compared the urban clutter loss to suburban clutter loss for a transmit antenna height of 85 m. Furthermore, we have estimated the error between the predicted loss as per ITU-R P.2108 and the measured clutter loss. Our results indicate that for higher frequencies, the measured clutter loss in urban/suburban areas is higher and so lower than the predicted clutter loss. In conclusion, it is necessary to improve the prediction model for clutter loss by taking into account the measured clutter loss in urban/suburban areas in the prediction model.

Propagation Model Combination of Building Entry Loss and Clutter Loss in Suburban Environment with Low-Rise High-Density Buildings at 3 and 24 GHz (저층 고밀도 건물 교외 환경에서 3 GHz 및 24GHz의 건물 인입 손실과 클러터 손실의 전파 모델 결합)

  • We measured the clutter loss (CL) and building entry loss (BEL) of signals in a low-rise high-density suburban environment. Three propagation models for BEL, CL, and a combination of BEL and CL were measured in the selected environment. We then derived the figures when the BEL was combined with the CL. At the two frequencies, the measured value of combination of BEL and CL is 27.55 dB and 26.12dB, respectively, and the differences between the measured value and the sum were -4.19 dB and 5.82 dB. Considering that the measurement was performed inside a building, such a difference seems to be small. Therefore, when BEL and CL were measured separately and summed, and then combined and summed, differences of -4.19 dB and 5.82 dB were apparent. This this result can be referenced when similar case of a propagation model was analyzed.

A Study of Efficient CFAR Algorithm (효율적인 CFAR 알고리듬 연구)

  • This paper proposes a new efficient CFAR algorithm. The structure of the proposed CFAR is relatively simple as compared with the OS-CFAR or ML-CFAR which are considered to deal with the nonhomogeneous environment such as clutter and multiple targets. The proposed algorithm is effectively applied to the radar signal processor with reduced computation burden. The relationship between the threshold and PFA of the proposed CFAR is derived analytically. The CFAR loss of the proposed CFAR algorithm is compared with CA-CFAR and OS-CFAR based on both SNR and ADT(Average Detection Threshold).

  • This paper compares the results of ${\Sigma}{\Delta}-STAP$ applied to actual radar test data and simulation data. The radar received a target signal from a virtual target generator and the clutter signal from a signal generator in an anechoic chamber. The simulation data were generated from ideal baseband radar signal modeling using the same parameter as that for the test radar. The ${\Sigma}{\Delta}-STAP$ results of the test and simulation data are similar in terms of the target signal shape and noise level. The SINR(Signal-to-Interfrence-plus-Noise Ratio) loss also had similar aspects, but the simulation result shows 1~2 dB higher SINR loss than the test result. This result verified that the simulation data can be a reasonable alternative test data when the ${\Sigma}{\Delta}-STAP$ is applied.

  • In this paper, we presented a signal model of STAP and actual environment of clutter. The novel estimation method of clutter covariance matrix using median value is proposed to overcome serious performance degradation after NHD in nonhomogeneous clutter. Eigen value characteristic is improved through diagonal loading. Target detection ability and SINR loss of the proposed method though MSMI statistic is also compared with conventional method using average value. The simulation results, confirm the proposed method has better performance than others.

  • In modern radars, dynamic range requirements far severed due to high CNR(Clutter-to-Noise Ratio) environment operation scenario. ADC spurious signal restricted the required dynamic range. In this paper, receiver gain of active phased array radar dependent on ADC nonlinear characteristic was analyzed. Within limited scope of ADC SFDR which blocks required system dynamic range, ADC dynamic range reaches trade-off with ADC SNR loss. Comparing antenna stage output noise voltage to that of ADC input, receiver gain was mathematically analyzed. Finally the whole contents were explained from the application example.

  • Spectrum sharing between wireless systems becomes a critical issue due to emerging new technologies and spectrum shortage. Recently, IMT system has been allocated in the same frequency C band (3400-4200MHz) along with FSS services on co-primary basis, which means that harmful interference probability may be inspired. In this paper, to estimate the spectrum sharing between IMT and FSS systems, the minimum separation distances have been evaluated considering major factors such as the clutter loss in some areas and the elevation angle of FSS earth station, and using I/N=-10dB which is fundamental criterion for coexistence.

  • Return signals of a ground penetrating radar(GPR) for mine detection at various frequencies and soil moisture contents are analyzed in this paper. We first compute the dielectric constant, conductivity and attenuation loss based on clay loam which is Korea standard soil. The mine-detection images of GPR at various frequencies are also obtained using the finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) technique. Then, the signal-to-clutter ratio(SCR) and received power of the radar are studied. It is shown that the variable frequency channels are suitable for a GPR to detect landmines at various soil conditions.

  • It is necessary to estimate the range and Doppler shifted spectrum for the extraction of useful information from the return echoes in the frequency modulated continuous wave radar systems used for the remote sending purpose such as detection of moving targets. However, the spectrum estimation using the FFT method causes the very large sidolobes of clutter masking the essential signal information if the acquisition time of an echo signal is pretty short. Therefore, in this paper, the efficient data windowing method is investigated to suppress the strong sidelobe levels of the clutter and results are analyzed.

Performance Analysis of Projection Statistics through Method of Clutter Covariance Matrix Estimation for STAP (STAP를 위한 간섭 공분산 행렬의 예측 방법에 따른 Projection Statistics의 성능 분석)

  • We analyze the performance of various techniques to overcome degradation of performance of STAP caused by nonhomogeneous clutter. The performance of NHD that used to eliminate outliers from nonhomogeneous clutter is improved by using the projection statistics(PS) that is robust to multiple outliers. The method of clutter covariance matrix estimation using a median value and the conventional method are also investigated and then compared. From the simulation results of STAP, the method of clutter covariance matrix estimation using a median value shows better performance than the conventional method for the calculation of the SINR loss, and MSMI for the single target and the multiple targets regardless of the NHD methods.
