  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of organizational and care worker factors on client violence occurring at nursing homes in Korea, and to provide an empirical basis on which to draw strategies for prevention and reduction of client violence. A survey was conducted on 253 care workers from 23 nursing homes located in 16 regions nationwide, and multiple regression models were analyzed to examine the effect of worker demographic variables, education and experience, work related characteristics, working conditions, and organizational risk management system on client violence. The respondents reported their experience of violence from the most frequent to the least in the order of physical, verbal, others, property damage, and sexual in nature; only half of their employers were implementing an organizational risk management system. In the regression analysis on client violence of all types combined, risk management procedures and supervisor leadership were found statistically signifiant. Based on these results, implications were discussed for agency efforts in improving risk management procedures and leadership training of supervisors.

  • This study was to applied QIMS(Qualitative Interpretive Meta-Synthesis) which was newly introduced in the field of social science recently to explore the client violence experience and coping in the social workers in a new way and in depth. The integrated analysis of the results of qualitative individual studies published in Korea so far has resulted in abundant results with accumulated knowledge and synergistic understanding paths of existing research results, and the limitations of qualitative research have been overcome. Eight published papers from 2013 to 2020 were included in the final analysis, and a total of 85 social workers analyzed the statements. The newly important themes created through the process of reducing the scope of data and the repetition of theme extraction and integration were divided into four categories: (1) violence and pain that can not be removed, (2) duality experienced as a result of occupation, (3) continuous attempts to change, (4) manifestation of sense of duty and job meaning. Based on the results of the integrated themes derived from this study, this study aims to present practical and policy alternatives to the prevention and coping of client violence experienced by social workers in various social welfare practice fields.

  • This study was to identify major risk factors associated with secondary traumatic stress in a sample of 654 public social welfare specialists. Findings indicated that 69.0% of the subjects experienced secondary traumatic stress, and 36.9% of them were in a high-risk group. Multiple regression analysis showed that the risk of the secondary traumatic stress was associated with gender, work hours, physical violence and threats from clients, coping strategies, and vocational self-efficacy. Based on these results, several interventions for preventing the incidence of secondary traumatic stress among public social welfare specialists are suggested as the follows: construction of secure job environment, development of educational programs for improving vocational self-efficacy and coping skills, and implementation of mental health screening system on a regular basis to prevent the outbreak of mental disease among the workers.

The multi-mediating effect of job stress, job attitude, and social support between client violence and social worker job response was empirically analyzed. 257 social workers in social welfare facilities were analyzed using SPSS. The following conclusions were drawn. First, there was a significant correlation between client violence, job stress, job attitude, social support, and job response variables. Client violence was affecting variables related to social worker job response. Second, job stress, job attitude, and social support had multiple mediating effects. The parallel mediation effect and the serial mediation effect were verified. Third, job attitude was found to be a variable of multiple mediating effects. Fourth, job stress and social support were found to be double mediating effect variables. In response, programs and manuals suitable for the type of social welfare facilities and the policy basis for preparing countermeasures for social workers were limited, and follow-up studies on various variables were suggested.
