Recently, PM10 is becoming a main issue in Korea because it causes a variety of diseases, such as respiratory and ophthalmologic diseases. This research studied to spatial information application cases for evaluating the feasibility of the location for PM10 observation stations utilizing Geogrphic Information System(GIS) spatial analysis. The spatial Information application cases for optimal location assessment were investigated to properly manage PM10 observation stations which are closely related with public spatial data and health care. There are 31 PM10 observation stations in Seoul city and the observed PM10 data at these stations were utilized to understand the overall assessment of PM10 stations to properly manage using interpolation methods. The estimated PM10 using Inverse Distance Weighted(IDW) and Kriging techniques and the map of PM10 concentrations of monitoring stations in Seoul city were compared with public spatial data such as precipitation, floating population, elementary school location. On the basis of yearly, seasonal and daily PM10 concentrations were used to evaluate the feasibility analysis and the location of current PM10 monitoring stations. The estimated PM10 concentrations were compared with floating population and calculated 2015 PM10 distribution data using zonal statistical methods. The national spatial data could be used to analyze the PM10 pollution distribution and additional determination of PM10 monitoring sites. It is further suggested that the spatial evaluation of national spatial data can be used to determine new location of PM10 monitoring stations.

In this study, appropriate probability distribution and parameter estimation method were selected to perform snowfall frequency analysis. Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) and Probability Weighted Moment Method (PWMM) appeared to be the best fit for snowfall frequency analysis in Korea. Snowfall frequency analysis applying GEV and PWMM were performed for 69 stations in Korea. Peak snowfall corresponding to recurrence intervals were estimated based on frequency analysis while snow loads were calculated using the estimated peak snowfall and specific weight of snow. Design snow load map was developed using 100-year recurrence interval snow load of 69 stations through Kriging of ArcGIS. The 2009 Korean Building Code and Commentary for design snow load was assessed by comparing the design snow loads which calculated in this study. As reflected in the results, most regions are required to increase the design snow loads. Thus, design snow loads and the map were developed from based on the results. The developed design snow load map is expected to be useful in the design of building structures against heavy snow loading throughout Korea most especially in ungaged areas.

As marine desertification and chlorosis in Korean coast have been intensified over time, Korean government is promoting marine afforestation projects. However, marine afforestation location is mainly decided by administrative convenience. Also, there is limited literature on location suitability about the marine afforestation. This study aims to assess location suitability of marine afforestation considering 3 significant criteria: ecological, submarine topographical, and human-social environment. Jeju, the study area of this study, first observed chlorosis in Korean coast at the small fishery town in Seogwipo. Jeju is currently suffering from chlorosis all around the island. Habitat Evaluation Procedure (HEP), 3D kriging, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is applied as analysis methods. Especially, 3D kriging is utilized for modeling 3D ocean space reflecting ocean environment appropriately. The result shows that Jocheon coast has better location suitability than Seogwipo Pyoseon coast. Jocheon coast has the maximum 61% suitability as the habitat of Ecklonia cava Kjellman, and is highly evaluated in other criteria. The results of this study are expected to find optimal marine afforestation location, and to contribute to the restoration of the Jeju coastal ecosystem and the revitalization of Jeju fishing village societies.
In this study, urban runoff analyses were performed using high resolution Quantitative Precipitation Estimation (QPE), and variation of rainfall and runoff were analyzed to evaluate QPE data for urban runoff analysis. The five drainage districts (Seocho3, 4, 5, Yeoksam and Nonhyun) around Gangnam station were chosen as study area, the area is $7.4km^2$. Rainfall data from KMA AWS (34 stations), SKP AWS (156 stations) and Gwanduk radar were used for QPEs in Seoul area. Four types of QPE(QPE1: KMA AWS, QPE2: KMA+ SKP AWS, QPE3: Gwangduk radar, QPE4: QPE2+QPE3) of 6 events in July 2013 were generated by using Krigging and conditional merging. The temporal and spatial resolution of QPEs are 10 minutes and 250 m, respectively. The complex pipe network were treated as 773 manholes, 772 sub-drainage districts and 1,059 pipelines for urban runoff analysis as input data. QPE2 and QPE4 show spatial variation of rainfall by sub-drainage districts as 1.9 times bigger than QPE1. The peak runoff of QPE2 and QPE4 also show spatial variation as 6 times bigger than Gangnam and Seocho AWS. Thus, the spatial variation of rainfall and runoff could exist in small area such as this study area, and using high-resolution rainfall data is desirable for accurate urban runoff analysis.
The internal erosion due to poor compaction of the material was the main cause of collapse of the embankment in Korea. The assessment of the compaction state of the dam body was a very important check in the safety diagnosis of the embankment. In this study, the correlation between dynamic cone penetration test and plate loading test which is the most typical compaction evaluation technique was analyzed to verify the applicability of the dynamic cone penetration test in evaluating the compaction state of the dam body. The standard penetration tests were carried out six times to define soil properties and depth of the test site. The spatial distributions were obtained by the Kriging method after 15 times of plate loading tests and 47 times of dynamic cone penetration tests. The Pearson correlation coefficient between the spatial distribution of the plate loading test and the dynamic cone penetration test spatial distribution at the constant penetration depth was calculated. The load distribution in the plate loading test and the blow counts at penetration depths of 5 cm, 10 cm and 15 cm in the dynamic cone penetration test showed a weak positive correlation.
This study was intended to investigate the rainfall-runoff relationship with spatially distributed rainfall data, and then, to analyze and quantify the uncertainty induced by spatially averaging rainfall data. For constructing spatially distributed rainfall data, several historical rainfall events were extended spatially by simple kriging method based on the semivariogram as a function of the relative distance. Runoff was computed by two models; one was the modified Clark model with spatially distributed rainfall data and the other was the conventional Clark model with spatially averaged rainfall data. Rainfall errors and discharge errors occurred through this process were defined and analyzed with respect to various rain-gage network densities. The following conclusions were derived as the results of this work; 1) The conventional Clark parameters could be appropriate for translating spatially distributed rainfall data. 2) The parameters estimated by the modified Clark model are more stable than those of the conventional Clark model. 3) Rainfall and discharge errors are shown to be reduced exponentially as the density of rain-gage network is increased. 4) It was found that discharge errors were affected largely by rainfall errors as the rain-gage network density was small.

The rainfall depth-area-duration analysis which is used to characterize precipitation extremes for specification of so-called design storms, provides a basis for evaluation of drought severity when storm depth is replaced by an appropriate measure of drought severity. So we propose a method for constructing drought severity-area-duration curves in this study. Monthly precipitation data over the whole Korea are used to compute SPI. Such SPIs are abstracted to several independent spatial components from EOF analysis. Using Kriging method, these spatial components are used to constitute grid-based SPI data set over the whole Korea including Jeju island with $6km{\times}6km$ resolution. After identifying main drought events, the drought severity-area-duration curves for these events over 32-year period of record are finally constructed. As a result, such curves show the similar shape with storm-based curves in the sense that the drought severity (or rainfall depth) is inversely proportional to drought area from the curves, but drought-based curves are different from storm-based curves in the sense that the drought severity decreasing rate with respect to drought area is much less than depth decreasing rate.

Many epidemiological studies, relying on administrative air pollution monitoring data, have reported the association between particulate matter ($PM_{10}$) air pollution and human health. These monitoring data were collected at a limited number of fixed sites, whereas government-generated health data are aggregated at the area level. To link these two data types for assessing health effects, it is necessary to estimate area-level concentrations of $PM_{10}$. In this study, we estimated district (Gu)-level $PM_{10}$ concentrations using a previously developed pointwise exposure prediction model for $PM_{10}$ and three types of point locations in Seoul, Korea. These points included 16,230 centroids of the largest census output residential areas, 422 community service centers, and 610 centroids on the 1km grid. After creating three types of points, we predicted $PM_{10}$ annual average concentrations at all locations and calculated Gu averages of predicted $PM_{10}$ concentrations as representative Gu-estimates. Then, we compared estimates to each other and to measurements. Prediction-based Gu-level estimates showed higher correlations with measurement-based estimates as prediction locations became more population representative ($R^2=0.06-0.59$). Among the three estimates, grid-based estimates gave lowest correlations compared to the other two(0.35-0.47). This study provides an approach for estimating area-level air pollution concentrations and assesses air pollution health effects using national-scale administrative health data.
In any applications using various types of spatial data, it is very important to account for the scale differences among available data sets and to change the scale to the target one as well. In this paper, we propose to use a geostatistical downscaling approach based on vaiorgram deconvloution and block simulation to generate fine-scale categorical thematic maps from coarse-scale fraction data. First, an iterative variogram deconvolution method is applied to estimate a point-support variogram model from a block-support variogram model. Then, both a direct sequential simulation based on area-to-point kriging and the estimated point-support variogram are applied to produce alternative fine-scale fraction realizations. Finally, a maximum a posteriori decision rule is applied to generate the fine-scale categorical thematic maps. These analytical steps are illustrated through a case study of land-cover mapping only using the block fraction data of thematic classes without point data. Alternative fine-scale fraction maps by the downscaling method presented in this study reproduce the coarse-scale block fraction values. The final fine-scale land-cover realizations can reflect overall spatial patterns of the reference land-cover map, thus providing reasonable inputs for the impact assessment in change of support problems.

The comprehensive master plan in November 2010 on Saemangeum internal development has been released, and there is a need for complementary measures related to in-situ monitoring methods in order to acquire water temperature (T) and salinity (S) data. Thus, these data are monitored and analyzed by Korea Rural Community Corporation continuously. The purposes of current study are to evaluate the distributions of seasonal T and S, sigma-t, and stratification parameter and to compare annual stratification system in 2011 and 2012. To achieve these objectives, monthly vertical changes of T, S, and sigma-t, which are reproduced by a kriging technique, have been analyzed. In summer, the temperature difference between surface and bottom layers varies from 2 to $3^{\circ}C$, and the stratification of T is considerably weak. The stratification of S occurs abruptly within depth of EL. (-)5 to EL. (-)10 m. Therefore, stratification is induced by sudden increasing of water inflow amount due to a localized downpour during the rainy season, and these stratification processes are strongly influenced by inflowing a fresh water from watersheds in estuary environment.
