  • This study examined changes of both psychological and physiological emotional responses according to change of the PMV (predicted mean vote) in the heating and the cooling air conditions. For this purpose, the changes of PMV were induced by the heating and cooling operations of the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems. In addition, positive/negative and arousal/relaxation were measured as the participant's psychological emotional responses, and HR (heart rate) was measured as the participant's physiological emotional responses. As a result, in same range of the PMV, both psychological and physiological emotional-responses were changed by air conditioning. It is suggested that occupant's emotional responses would depend on the operational conditions of heating and cooling in indoor thermal environments, and both psychological and physiological emotional response should be considered when occupants try to match the indoor thermal environments to their thermal expectations.

  • Applying perceptual hierarchy of facial feature points, a neural network model for recognizing facial expressions was designed. Input data were convolution values of 150 facial expression pictures by Gabor-filters of 5 different sizes and 8 different orientations for each of 39 mesh points defined by MPEG-4 SNHC (Synthetic/Natural Hybrid Coding). A set of multiple regression analyses was performed with the rating value of the affective states for each facial expression and the Gabor-filtered values of 39 feature points. The results show that the pleasure-displeasure dimension of affective states is mainly related to the feature points around the mouth and the eyebrows, while a arousal-sleep dimension is closely related to the feature points around eyes. For the filter sizes. the affective states were found to be mostly related to the low spatial frequency. and for the filter orientations. the oblique orientations. An optimized neural network model was designed on the basis of these results by reducing original 1560(39x5x8) input elements to 400(25x2x8) The optimized model could predict human affective rating values. up to the correlation value of 0.886 for the pleasure-displeasure, and 0.631 for the arousal-sleep. Mapping the results of the optimized model to the six basic emotional categories (happy, sad, fear, angry, surprised, disgusted) fit 74% of human responses. Results of this study imply that, using human principles of recognizing facial expressions, a system for recognizing facial expressions can be optimized even with a a relatively little amount of information.

  • Previous emotion studies revealed the two core affective dimensions of valence and arousal using affect-eliciting stimuli, such as pictures, music, and videos. Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR), a type of stimuli that has emerged recently, produces a sense of psychological stability and calmness. We explored whether ASMR could be represented on the core affect dimensions. In this study, we used three affective types ASMR (negative, neutral, and positive) as stimuli. Auditory ASMR videos were used in Study 1, while auditory and audiovisual ASMR videos were used in Study 2. Participants were asked to rate how they felt about the ten adjectives using five-point Likert scales. Multidimensional scaling (MDS) and classification analyses were performed. The results of the MDS showed that distinctions between auditory and audiovisual ASMR videos were represented well in the valence dimension. Additionally, the results of the classification showed that affective conditions within and across individuals for within- and cross-modalities. Thus, we confirmed that the affective representations for individuals could be predicted and that the affective representations were consistent between individuals. These results suggest that ASMR videos, including other affect-eliciting videos, were also located in the core affect dimension space, supporting the core affect theory (Russell, 1980).

  • Parke and Waters' model[1] of muscle-based face deformation was used to develop a system that can synthesize facial expressions when the pleasure-displeasure and arousal-sleep coordinate values of internal states are specified. Facial expressions sampled from a database developed by Chung, Oh, Lee and Byun [2] and its underlying model of internal states were used to find rules for face deformation. The internal - state model included dimensional and categorical values of the sampled facial expressions. To find out deformation rules for each of the expressions, changes in the lengths of 21 facial muscles were measured. Then, a set of multiple regression analyses was performed to find out the relationship between the muscle lengths and internal states. The deformation rules obtained from the process turned out to produce natural-looking expressions when the internal states were specified by the pleasure-displeasure and arousal-sleep coordinate values. Such a result implies that the rules derived from a large scale database and regression analyses capturing the variations of individual muscles can be served as a useful and powerful tool for synthesizing facial expressions.

  • This thesis presents an emotion-based contents player platform that can change its visual and aural components as user's emotions. It analyzes the emotion as pleasant, unpleasant, aroused, and relaxed based on the physiological signals and the user's active response. Accordingly. the system reorganizes graphical and aural stimuli, such as, light, color, sound, in real-time. It can be used to develop and show the emotional contents and also be applied for the systematic analysis to find out how the components would affect the emotion. This paper describes overall the system architecture and the implementations of the sub-systems, as well as the actual contents built on top of the platform.

  • The objective of this study is to extract information from electroencephalogram(EEG) signals with which we can discriminate mental states. Seven university students were participated in this study. Ten stimuli based on IAPS (International Affective Picture Systems) Were presented at random according to the experimental schedule. 8-channel ($O_1$, $O_2$, $F_3$, $F_4$, $F_7$, $F_8$, $FP_1$, and $FP_2$)EEG signals were recorded at a sampling rate of 204.8 Hz for visual stimuli and analyzed. After random ten sequential stimuli presentation, the subject subjectively assessed the stimulus by scaling from -5 to 5. If the stimulus was the best and the worst, it was scored 5 and -5, respectively. Only maximum and minimum scored-EEG signals within each subject were selected on the basis of subjectively assessment for analysis. EEG signals were transformed into feature objects based on scalar autoregressive model coefficients. They were classified with Discriminant Analysis for each channel. The features produced results with the best classification accuracy of 85.7 % in $O_1$ and $O_2$ for visual stimuli. This study could be extended to establish an algorithm which quantify and classify emotions evoked by visual stimulus using autoregressive models.
