This paper presents an experimental study on the flexural performance of concrete members strengthened with external steel plates for the purpose of improving seismic performance. In order to strengthen the structure, a strengthening method was applied that wraps the walls and columns with steel members. The partial section of the wall with the longest span in the structure was manufactured in real size and the strengthening effect was confirmed by performing a static load test. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the strengthened section exhibited sufficient flexural performance satisfied to the seismic requirements, but the behavior until failure was not obtained because of actuator capacity. It was confirmed that the strengthened member resists the out-of-plane moment with a composite behavior. It was verified that the stiffness and load carrying capacity of the strengthened member were improved compared to the non-strengthened member by displacement and strain measurements.

The panels are used as a composite part of the completed deck. They replace the main bottom transverse deck reinforcement and also serve as a form surface for the cast-in-place concrete upper layer that contains the top of deck reinforcement. However, in order to apply the precast panels to bridges properly, it is necessary to fully understand the structural characteristics of joint in precast panels. Particularly, since the bridge deck is under repeated loads such as traffic loads, fatigue behavior and characteristics of joint should be investigated. In this paper, fatigue tests of composite deck with shear ties and loop joints were conducted. The fatigue tests were conducted with an application of repeated loading and wheel loading. Test results were analyzed to examine the current design code for fatigue of reinforcement bar and serviceability under repeated loading.
The hollow modular concrete block reinforced foundation method is one of the ground reinforcement foundation methods that uses hexagonal honeycomb-shaped concrete blocks with mixed crushed rock to reinforce soft grounds. It then forms an artificial layered ground that increases bearing capacity and reduces settlement. The hollow modular honeycomb-shaped concrete block is a geometrically economical, stable structure that distributes forces in a balanced way. However, the behavioral characteristics of hollow modular concrete block reinforced foundations are not yet fully understood. In this study, a bearing capacity test is performed to analyze the reinforcement effectiveness of the hollow modular concrete block through the laboratory model tests. From the load-settlement curve, punching shear failure occurs under the unfilled sand condition (A-1-N). However, the filled sand condition (A-1-F) shows a linear curve without yielding, confirming the reinforcement effect is three times higher than that of unreinforced ground. The bearing capacity equation is proposed for the parts that have contact pressure under concrete, vertical stress of hollow blocks, and the inner skin friction force from horizontal stress by confining effect based on the schematic diagram of confining effect inside a hollow modular concrete block. As a result of calculating the bearing capacity, the percentage of load distribution for contact force on the area of concrete is about 65%, vertical force on the area of hollow is 16.5% and inner skin friction force of area of the inner wall is about 18.5%. When the surcharge load is applied to the concrete part, the vertical stress occurs on the area of the hollow part by confining effect first. Then, in the filled sand in the hollow where the horizontal direction is constrained, the inner skin friction force occurs by the horizontal stress on the inner wall of the hollow modular concrete block. The inner skin friction force suppresses the punching of the concrete part and reduces contact pressure.
Traditionally, domestic steel design and construction practice has provided extra shear studs to moment frame beams even when they are designed as non-composite beams. In the 1994 Northridge earthquake, connection damage initiated from the beam bottom flange side was prevalent. The upward moving of the neutral axis due to the composite action between steel beam and floor deck was speculated to be one of the critical causes. In this study, full-scale seismic testing was conducted to investigate the side effects of the composite action in steel seismic moment frames. The specimen PN700-C, designed following the domestic connection and floor deck details, exhibited significant upward shift of the neutral axis under sagging (or positive) moment, thus producing high strain demand on the bottom flange, and showed a poor seismic performance because of brittle fracture of the beam bottom flange at 3% story drift. The specimen DB700-C, designed by using RBS connection and with the details of minimized floor composite action, exhibited superior seismic performance, without experiencing any fracture or concrete crushing, almost identical to the bare steel counterpart (specimen DB700-NC). The results of this study clearly indicate that the beams and connections in seismic steel moment frames should be constructed to minimize the composite action of a floor deck if possible.

With increasing corrosion in RC (Reinforced Concrete) structures, cracks occurred due to corrosion products and bearing load resistance decreased. In this study, corrosion was induced through an accelerated corrosion test (ICM: Impressed Current Method) with 140 hours of duration, and changes in USV (Ultra-Sonic Velocity), flexural failure load, and corrosion weight were evaluated before and after corrosion test. Three levels of cover depth (20 mm, 30 mm, and 40 mm) were considered, and the initial cracking period increased and the rust around steel decreased with increasing cover depth. In addition, the USV linearly decreased with decreasing cover depth and increasing amount of corrosion. In the flexural loading test, the bending capacity decreased by more than 10% due to corrosion, but a clear correlation could not be obtained since the corrosion ratio was small, so that the effect of slip was greater than that of reduced cross-sectional area of steel due to corrosion. As cover depth increased, the produced corrosion amount and USV changed with a clear linear relationship, and the cracking period due to corrosion could be estimated by the gradient of the measured corrosion current.

Recent studies to improve reinforcement of structures have developed stiff type Polyurea by using highly polymized compound Polyurea, but the reinforcing effect of it appears to be merely good. To find the proper usage of Polyurea as structural reinforcement, stiff type Polyurea has developed by manipulating the ratio of the components that consist flexural type Polyurea and the developed stiff type Polyurea shows higher hardness and tensile capacity. The reinforcement effect evaluation of has been performed by the polyurea applied RC slab specimens, and the reinforcement effect of the combination of fiber sheet and polyurea has been tested. The results shows that the Polyurea applied specimens have significant improvement on hardness and ductility compare to those of unreinforced. Also, the specimens that stiff type Polyurea is sprayed on fiber sheet reinforcement has higher reinforcing effect than only sheet reinforced specimens. However, the specimens that and fiber sheet attached after polyurea applied on showed that the high toughness of fiber sheet restrains the ductile behavior of Polyurea due to the high ductility, thereby the specimen suffers the concentration of load, which leads the brittle fracture behavior.
The needs for high strength structural materials have recently increased, because construction and cost efficiencies are demanded by the costumers. But, the use of high strength reinforcing bars requires longer development and splice lengths compared to normal strength bars. This restriction may cause reduction in construction efficiency and require more complicated details. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the bond strength on the rib shape of reinforcing bars to decrease development and splice lengths of high strength reinforcements. Total of 5 simple beam specimens were tested, and the main test variable was a rib shape of reinforcing bars. Test data was analyzed in the viewpoint of bond strength, load-deflection relationship, and crack pattern. Test results indicated that the bond strength of high relative rib area reinforcing bars increased up to 11% compared to normal strength reinforcements. And the improved rib shape reinforcements, which were formed with high and low height rib, increased the bond strength up to 23% even though the relative rib area was same as the high relative rib area reinforcements. Serviceability performances such as deflection number of cracking, and maximum crack width were similar in all specimens, so it is safe to conclude that the improved rib shape reinforcements can be applied to the structural members.

The demand for maintenance in Korea infrastructure facilities constructed since the 1970s has increased significantly compared to the demand for new construction. Moreover, after the Gyeongju and Pohang earthquakes, seismic performance evaluation, repair, and retrofitting projects have been carried out. Therefore, in this study, a specimen was designed following the L-type GFRP Plate Externally Bonded Retrofit method, one among other retrofit methods. The L-type GFRP Plate was bonded to the specimen by epoxy and a washered steel nail. A four-point bending test was performed to confirm the strengthening effect of the Externally Bonded Retrofit method using an L-type GFRP Plate. The strengthening effect of the L-type GFRP plate was proven experimentally, and the behavior of the beam designed following the L-type GFRP Plate Externally Bonded Retrofit method was evaluated according to Korea's "Design Manual & Specification for Strengthening of RC Structures by Advanced Composites System". Furthermore, the effectiveness of the bonding method, a combination of epoxy and washered steel nail, was also checked. The results showed that the design, according to the guidelines mentioned above, predicted the strength of the member well, but the failure mode did not satisfy the design assumption because of unexpected damage to the GFRP plate due to the fixing method, washered steel nail.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the seismic performance of gravity-designed post tensioned (PT) flat plate frames with and without slab bottom reinforcement passing through the column. In low and moderate seismic regions, buildings are often designed considering only gravity loads. This study focuses on the seismic performance of gravity load designed PT flat plate frames. For this purpose, 3-, 6- and 9-story PT flat plate frames are designed considering only gravity loads. For reinforced concrete flat plate frames, continuous slab bottom reinforcement (integrity reinforcement) passing through the column should be placed to prevent progressive collapse; however, for the PT flat plate frames, the slab bottom reinforcement is often omitted since the requirement for the slab bottom reinforcement for PT flat plates is not clearly specified in ACI 318-08. This study evaluates the seismic performance of the model frames, which was evaluated by conducting nonlinear time history analyses. For conducting nonlinear time history analyses, six sets of ground motions are used as input ground motions, which represent two different hazard levels (return periods of 475 and 2475 years) and three different locations (Boston, Seattle, and L.A.). This study shows that gravity designed PT flat plate frames have some seismic resistance. In addition, the seismic performance of PT flat plate frames is significantly improved by the placement of slab bottom reinforcement passing through the column.

An optical fiber sensor is capable of nondestructive measurement of a structure and it has an advantage of the immunity to electromagnetic interference because light is not affected by electromagnetic wave. In addition, if optical fibers are buried in an object like a concrete, this sensor tan analyze defects and physical status of the object without disassembling it. Especially, the fiber Bragg grating sensor is a promising optical fiber sensor capable of nondestructive test of such an object. A fiber Bragg grating has the characteristics of reflecting or blotting light of a specific wavelength. If we apply physical quantity like strain to the fiber Bragg grating, the center wavelength of the reflected light is shifted and then we can find the physical quantity applied to the fiber Bragg grating by measuring the center wavelength shift of the reflected light. The fiber Bragg grating sensor capable ot static and dynamic strain measurement is being used in health-monitoring of buildings, structures, etc. Recently increasing is interest in dynamic strain measurement inevitable to the civil structures such as roads and bridges. In this study we implemented the optical fiber sensor system which can measure dynamic strain at multiple points using Fabry-Perot wavelength demodulation. And we measured the static and dynamic strain using this sensor system with a test structure(cantilever). Measurement results were similar to those obtained with the conventional electrical measurement methods.
