  • The main purpose of this research was to enhance the durability in both the design and construction of dams. Especially, in case of rockfill dams, the durability of tunnel concrete in a concrete-faced rockfill dam(CFRD) is achieved by optimizing the fly ash replacement for cement and application of steel fiber. The effect on durability and thermal property corresponding to the increasing replacement of fly ash and application of steel fiber was evaluated, and the optimum value of fly ash replacement and steel fiber application was recommended. The results show that 15% of fly ash replacement and $20kg/m^3$ of steel fiber application was found to be an optimum level and demonstrated excellent performance in durability and thermal property.

  • In this paper, dynamic behavior of steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) by experimental method is discussed. Because of its improved ability to dissipate energy, impact resistance and fatigue behavior, SFRC has a better dynamic behavior than that of plain concrete. Dynamic behavior is influenced by longitudinal reinforcement ratio, volume and type of steel fiber, strength of concrete and the stress level. Impact resistance and fatigue behavior in the SFRC has been evaluated from dynamic experimental test data at various levels of cracked states in the elements.

  • Synthetic fiber reinforced concrete is applicable to many applications for construction material. In general, synthetic fibers have low tensile strength and elastic modulus, but they have many advantages such as high crack resistance, impact resistance, chemical resistance, flexural behavior and corrosion free in fiber reinforced concrete. Recently, fiber reinforced concrete with macro synthetic fibers has been used to improve performance of structures in tunnel shotcrete, precast segmental lining and bridge slab and precast concrete structures. This study investigated the influence of bundled type polyamide fiber reinforced concrete on the flexural behavior in accordance with ASTM C 1609 and KS F 2566 standards.

  • Carburization at concrete structures is being processed independently or compositively and each unique Carburization will appear depending on the condition of circumstance. Therefore, the depletion rate was being estimated at this research for buildings and civil construction structures of different environments and of more than 10 - 60 years old by calculating the depth of carburization and the density of Alkali. As the results of the test, buildings (interior) had a deeper and a faster carburization than civil construction structures being exposed to open air as closer to the shore. And also, concrete structures being used as an underdrain of sewage were proven to have a deeper carburization than utility-pipe conduits or underground tunnels.

  • Concrete with activated carbon and titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been used to reduce the particulate matter (PM) in underground structures (e.g., tunnels) due to the high performance of nitrogen oxides (NOx) abatement. Damage (e.g. crack, spalling, or detachment) can be caused by the environmental and ageing effects on the surface of the particulate matter reduction concrete, installed on the tunnel lining. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the existence of spalling on the concrete surface for maintaining performance of NOx reduction. In this study, a basic research was performed for feasibility of spalling evaluation using electrical resistivity characteristics. Given the test results, the electrical resistivity was decreased as the ratios of activated carbon (0~15%) and TiO2 (0~25%) were increased for specimens. Under a dry condition, electrical resistivity of cement specimens, mixed with activated carbon and TiO2, was decreased up to 2.3 times, compared with the normal cement specimen. In addition, under saturation conditions (degree of saturation: 85~98%), electrical resistivity of cement specimens with activated carbon, was decreased up to 3.5 times, compared with the normal cement specimen. Regardless of the condition (dry or saturated), the difference of electrical resistivity values shows the range of 2.3~2.8 times between the mixing specimen (with activated carbon (15%) and TiO2 (25%)) and the normal cement specimen. This study can help to provide basic knowledge for spalling evaluation using the electrical resistivity on the surface of the particulate matter reduction concrete in tunnels.

  • In this study, the staged seismic performance evaluations were conducted to the 91 high speed railway tunnels in use for checking whether to comply with the recent design criteria or not. In addition, the seismic fragility functions of the tunnels were developed to allow the probabilistic risk assessment. The results of the staged seismic performance evaluations which consist of a preliminary assessment and a detailed assessment, show that the tunnels comply with the recent design criteria. With reference to the results of previous studies, a form of the proposed seismic fragility functions was set as a log-normal distribution by PGA, and the parameters of the functions were determined by using the probability of damage for the design PGA level. The seismic fragility functions were developed for each types (Cut & Cover, NATM) of tunnels. The seismic fragility functions from this study and the existing research results (FEMA, 2004) were compared to evaluate the seismic performance level of the tunnels, as a result the tunnels of this study were relatively superior to the ASSM tunnels on the seismic performance.

  • When a rock slope is excavated adjacent to a existing tunnel, the behavior of the existing tunnel in the jointed rock masses is greatly influenced by the joint conditions and slope status. In this study, the effects of joint dip and slope angle close to a tunnel are investigated through a large scale model using a biaxial test equipment ($3.1\;m\;{\times}\;3.1\;m\;{\times}\;0.50\;m$ (width $\times$ height $\times$ length)). The jointed rock masses were built by concrete blocks. The diameter of the modeled tunnel is 0.6 m and the dip angles of joint vary in the range of $0-90^{\circ}$. In addition, the excavated slope angle varies within $30{\sim}90^{\circ}$. Deformational behaviors of the tunnel were analyzed in consideration of joint dip and slope angle. With increase of the joint dip and slope angle, the magnitude of tunnel distortion and the moment of tunnel lining were increased. Rock mass displacement in horizontal was also dependent on the joint dip and the excavated slope angle, which indicated the optimal slope reinforcement for a specific rock mass conditions.

  • Long-term safety over millennia is the top priority consideration in the construction of disposal sites. However, ensuring the mechanical stability of deep geological repositories for spent fuel, a.k.a. radwaste, disposal during construction and operation is also crucial for safe operation of the repository. Imposing restrictions or limitations on tunnel support and lining materials such as shotcrete, concrete, grouting, which might compromise the sealing performance of backfill and buffer materials which are essential elements for the long-term safety of disposal sites, presents a highly challenging task for rock engineers and tunnelling experts. In this study, as part of an extensive exploration to aid in the proper selection of disposal sites, the anticipation of constructing a deep geological repository at a depth of 500 meters in an unknown state has been carried out. Through a review of 2D and 3D numerical analyses, the study aimed to explore the range of properties that ensure stability. Preliminary findings identified the potential range of rock properties that secure the stability of central and disposal tunnels, while the stability of the vertical tunnel network was confirmed through 3D analysis, outlining fundamental rock conditions necessary for the construction of disposal sites.

  • In this study, cause of longitudinal crack which is found on duct slab of road tunnel is studied. In-depth investigation, such as visual inspection, non-destructive testing and geometrical surveying of duct slab, is carried out. In order to perform cause analysis, the investigated results are compared to the results of numerical analysis. Many factors, which cause longitudinal crack, are classified as constrained condition of the duct slab, location of the rebar, temperature, shrinkage and so on. According to the classified causes of longitudinal crack, numerical analysis is performed considering construction stage of the tunnel lining. Especially, in order to predict shrinkage stain due to discrepancy of curing date, ACI-209 model, KCI structural design code and other researcher's shrinkage test results are compared. The results show that shrinkage strain is one of the main factors causing longitudinal crack. Other investigated tunnels are classified along with the construction method of duct slab and patterns of cracks. As a result, improving ways to construct duct slab are suggested.
