  • Reasonable prediction of residual capacity of fire-damaged reinforced columns is important for both the safety measurement and the rehabilitation of the reinforced concrete structures suffered from exposure to extensive fire. In order to predict the residual behavior of fire-damaged reinforced concrete columns, its predictive model must be able to take into account the amount of heat transferred into the column, the level of deterioration of constituent materials and various column geometries. The numerical model presented in this research includes all these factors. The model has been shown to reasonably predict the residual behavior of fire-damaged columns. Parametric studies were performed using this model for the effects of cover thickness, exposure time to fire and column geometries on the residual behavior of reinforced concrete columns. It was found that serious damage on the residual capacity of column resulted from a longer exposure time to fire but only marginal differences from other factors.

  • In order to predict the remaining life of marine concrete structures under climatic loads, it is necessary to develop an analytical approach to predict the time and space dependent deterioration of concrete structures due to mainly chloride attack up to corrosion initiation and additional deterioration like cracking of cover concrete. This study aims to introduce FEM model for life-time simulation of concrete structures subjected to chloride attack. In order to consider uncertainties in materials as well as environmental parameters for the prediction, Monte Carlo Simulation is integrated in that FEM modeling for reliability-based remaining service life prediction. The paper is organized as follows: firstly general scheme for reliability-based remaining service life of concrete structures is introduced, then the FEM models for chloride penetration, corrosion product expansion and cover cracking are briefly explained, finally an example is demonstrated and the effects of localization of chloride concentration and corrosion product expansion on service life using above model are discussed.

  • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) was applied to an evaluation of the concrete condition of bridge decks with asphalt concrete. Deterioration was considered to have occurred when the relative permittivity of a concrete-faced asphalt concrete overlay showed more than 12. The relative permittivity of concrete varied considerably with the levels of porosity and water. In this study, GPR tests were carried out to determine the influence of weather and concrete condition on the relative permittivity for the research subject of an overlaid concrete bridge deck in public service. According to the test results, if bridge decks are in good condition, the relative permittivity of the top concrete of a bridge deck exhibited a normal distribution. After the deck concrete deteriorated, the relative permittivity varied with the amount of penetrated water according to the weather condition and deteriorated status of deck concrete.

  • This study investigated the possibility of early determination of frost damage on the concrete surface by using the rebound hardness method, widely used for estimation the compressive strength of concrete on the site. For this purpose, the surface damage of concrete was compared by measuring the rebound hardness and the relative dynamic modulus of the concrete for the multi-sided and single sided concrete surface exposed to freeze and thaw condition. Compared to the resonance vibration method, the rebound hardness method was able to show the frost damage 150 cycles quicker for the single-sided exposed concrete specimen and 50 cycles quicker for the multi-sided exposed concrete specimen. Therefore, it is considered that the rebound hardness method can determine the concrete surface damage more quickly than that of the resonance vibration method.

  • Among deteriorations of concrete due to environmental exposure, carbonation problems of concrete structures have increased in urban and underground structures. But conventional carbonation-prediction equations that were proposed by foreign references, can not be applied directly to the prediction of carbonation for domestic concrete structures. The purpose of this study is to propose a prediction equation of carbonation depth by considering domestic exposure conditions of concrete structures. For the derivation of the equation, conventional carbonation-prediction equations are analyzed. Through considering the relationship between results of prediction equation and those of various domestic field survey data, the so-called correction factors for different domestic exposure condition of concrete structures are derived. Finally, a carbonation-prediction equation of concrete structures under domestic exposure conditions is proposed with consideration for concrete strength in core and correction factors.

  • When RC(Reinforced Concrete) structures are exposed to harsh environment, deterioration phenomenon occurs, and the corrosion in rebar due to chloride intrusion is known as representative deterioration, so called chloride attack. In this paper, chloride resistance performance of 2 years aged concrete is evaluated considering 3 levels of water to binder ratio(0.37, 0.42, and 0.47) and 2 levels of substitution ratio of fly ash(0% and 30%). Accelerated chloride diffusion coefficient tests referred to Tang's method, total passed charge tests referred to ASTM C 1202, and compressive strength tests referred to KS F 2405 are performed. With adaptation of the previous test results and the results from this study, time-dependent chloride diffusion characteristics are analyzed for each concrete. The FA(Fly Ash) concrete has higher chloride resistance performance than OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement) concrete. According to the evaluation standard of ASTM C 1202, the FA concrete has "Moderate" grade after 49 days while OPC concrete does "Moderate" grade after 365 days. As the results of time-parameter for chloride diffusion, OPC concrete and FA concrete show the decreasing behavior of time-parameters with increasing water to binder ratio. Also, FA concrete has 1.57~2.74 times of time-parameter than OPC concrete. That's cause is thought that the time-parameter indicates the gradient of decreasing of diffusion coefficient. FA concrete has higher time-parameters than OPC concrete by pozzolanic reaction of FA.

  • In this study, the relative effects of low-chloride deicier(LCD) and two other deicing agents on the scaling of concrete were conducted in a series of tests at laboratory accordance with the ASTM C 672. The solutions concentration of deicers tested included 1, 4, 10%. Tap water was used as control. The amount of scaling was evaluated gravimetrically. As test result of deicer solution types, when applied to 4% solutions, surface scaling of concrete after 56 freeze-thaw cycles was produced significantly as about 9 times on LCD solution, as about 18 times on $CaCl_2$ solution, and as about 33 times on NaCl solution comparing with tap water. As test result of deicer solution concentrations, relatively low concentrations (of the 4% by weight) of deicer were produced more surface scaling than higher concentrations (of the 10% by weight) or lower concentrations (of the 1% by weight) of deicer. It show that the damaging concentration is of the order of 3~4% for previous research result. It appears that the mechanism of surface scaling is primarily physical rather than chemical. Also, the effect of chloride deicier types, freeze-thaw cycling, and air contents on the performance of concrete was experimentally investigated. The results show that the concrete specimens subjected to freeze-thaw cycling scaled more severely in exposure to deicing salt than those in non-exposure to deicing salt, weight losses of the specimens tested in exposure to deicing salt were twice as much as those tested in non-exposure to deicing salt. Relative dynamic modulus of elasticity of concrete specimens decreased more quickly in exposure to deicing salt than in non-exposure to deicing salt. Also, relative dynamic modulus of elasticity of concrete specimens in exposure to sodium chloride deicing salt was decreased more quickly comparing with exposure to LCD salt. It is also shown that the chloride contents according to concrete specimen depths was more largely in exposure to LCD salt. When concrete specimen is exposed to chloride deicing salts and freeze-thaw cycling, performance degradation in the entrained air concrete(AE concrete) retarded more considerably comparing with non-entrained air concrete(Non-AE concrete).

  • At present, waterproof is absolutely needed to minimize the carbonation of bridge decks in Kor ea. In this research indoor experiments for penetrative waterproof admixture out of available methods are carried out to evaluate the resisting characteristics against natural arid artificial car bona ting conditions. The test results show that the optimal time of waterproof is 14 days after the concrete construc. tion but reconsideration is necessary for the application to high strength concrete because of the reduction in penetration of waterproof admixture. The results also show that the penetrat ive waterproof admixture has srrong resistance to the acid rain. However the waterproof capability of the admixture is not permanent especially under the natural exposure. Therefore the slab of a bridge should be paved with asphalt concrete. Other noticeable effects are the increase of heat and abrasion resistances from the use of the waterproof agents.

  • This paper aims to examine the insulation performance of insulated gang form by changing the energy (power) consumption and concrete calorific value to assist in concrete protection in cold weather. According to the test results, the general gang form will generate three times the energy (power) consumption for 12 hours after the concrete is poured. In contrast, insulated gang foam consumed no energy (power) for 21 hours after pouring. The final power consumption was 3.7 times higher than that of the general gang form, confirming the improved performance of insulated gang form with regard to energy (power) consumption. The calorific value examination shows that the calorific value changes significantly according to the change of outside temperature after concrete placement in the case of the general gang form. However, in the case of the insulated gang form, only a slight heat loss occurred in the part of the frame, and it showed a constant heating pattern from the concrete casting to the demolding of the mold.

  • Currently, the most commonly used decontamination agent in the country is calcium chloride, and the use of decontamination agents nationwide is on the rise due to climate change in the country. The deicing agent, aimed at deicing snow, is sprayed and the chloride is frozen and thawed by the dissolved surface water, causing various damages such as deterioration to the concrete. Therefore, in this study, the reactive urethane polymer was manufactured to coat concrete surface protection material, which is a method that prevents moisture from externally penetrating by applying to concrete surfaces, and the mixing agent was selected through the size control of molecules and surface modification, and the properties of penetrant stiffening agents and the application method of concrete was evaluated.
