  • To know the thermal-moisture condition of the concrete is very important to expect the concrete durability such as chloride attack, carbonation, alkali-aggregate reaction, freezing damage. The purpose of this study is to establish the temperature-moisture coupled model which is based on the finite element method and measure temperature and relative humidity under the exposured condition.

  • Structures in our surroundings deteriorate over time due to environmental and chemical factors, resulting in a decrease in their performance. The primary causes of degradation in concrete structures are carbonation, salt damage, and freeze-thaw cycles. Various maintenance methods exist to address these degradation issues. However, research and technological development for existing maintenance methods have been ongoing, but the accuracy and effectiveness of repair materials and techniques have not been extensively validated. Therefore, in this study, we conducted a material performance evaluation of various manufacturers' repair materials. Based on this evaluation, we applied corrosion inhibitors and epoxy, which are the methods most closely related to crack repair, to assess the durability performance against carbonation, salt damage, and freeze-thaw cycles. The results show approximately a two-fold performance improvement against carbonation and salt damage, and a 5% enhancement in repair performance against freeze-thaw cycles. Thus, it is considered effective in preventing rebar corrosion when appropriate maintenance is carried out according to environmental and chemical factors during structural repairs.

  • Ten types of steel bars having different Cr contents were embedded in concretes with chloride ion contents of 0.3, 0.6, 1.2, and $2.4kg/m^3$ to fabricate specimens assuming such deteriorative environments. After being carbonated to the reinforcement level, these concretes were subjected to corrosion-accelerating cycles of heating/cooling and drying/wetting. The time-related changes in the corrosion area and corrosion loss of the Cr-bearing rebars were then measured to investigate their corrosion resistance. The results revealed that in a deteriorative environment prone to both carbonation and chloride attack, corrosion resistance was evident with a Cr content of 7% or more and 9% or more in concretes with chloride ion contents of 1.2 and $2.4kg/m^3$, respectively.

  • The purpose of this paper is to find an efficient heat source to amplify the surface temperature of damaged concrete structures for infrared thermography. we compare two different heat sources of far-infrared lamp and halogen lamp each other for their efficiency. The two heat sources were applied to the concrete specimens. Two different concrete specimens were used: one was the concrete containing internal void and the other was wrapped with partially unbonded fiber reinforced polymer sheet. it was found that the far-infrared lamp was more efficient than the halogen lamp. In addition, we propose a new algorithm to make the damage zone displayed clear in the image obtained from the thermographic operation. The algorithm is a combination of Gauss filtering process and the Prewitt mask operation.

  • Due to the increasing significance of durability, much researches on carbonation, one of the major deterioration phenomena are carried out. However, conventional researches based on fully hardened concrete are focused on prediction of carbonation depth and they sometimes cause errors. In contrast with steel members, behaviors in early-aged concrete such as porosity and hydrates (calcium hydroxide) are very important and may be changed under carbonation process. Because transportation of deteriorating factors is mainly dependent on porosity and saturation, it is desirable to consider these changes in behaviors in early-aged concrete under carbonation for reasonable analysis of durability in long term exposure or combined deterioration. As for porosity, unless the decrease in $CO_2$ diffusion due to change in porosity is considered, the results from the prediction is overestimated. The carbonation depth and characteristics of pore water are mainly determined by amount of calcium hydroxide, and bound chloride content in carbonated concrete is also affected. So Analysis based on test for hydration and porosity is recently carried out for evaluation of carbonation characteristics. In this study, changes in porosity and hydrate $(Ca(OH)_2)$ under carbonation process are performed through the tests. Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP) for changed porosity, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) for amount of $(Ca(OH)_2)$ are carried out respectively and analysis technique for porosity and hydrates under carbonation is developed utilizing modeling for behavior in early-aged concrete such as multi component hydration heat model (MCHHM) and micro pore structure formation model (MPSFM). The results from developed technique is in reasonable agreement with experimental data, respectively and they are evaluated to be used for analysis of chloride behavior in carbonated concrete.

  • The present study conducted mock-up tests under the simulated sewage environments to examine the practical significance and limitation of coating materials that were previously developed on the basis of the bacterial glycocalix as a protection of concrete structures exposed to microbiological and sulphate attacks. The variations of the compressive strength and mass of the concrete due to the sulphate attack were measured using cylinder specimens. The bacteria growth and glycocalix formulation were calculated from the samples extracted from the sewage pipes. The next generation sequencing analysis was also conducted for environmental damage assessment due to the use of Rhodobacter capsulatus in the simulated sewage environments. The mock-up tests revealed that the developed coating materials have a good potential in resisting the sulphate attack, indicating no reduction on compressive strength and mass of the coated concrete under the sewage environment. At the age of 91 days, the concentrations of viable bacteria and glycocalix measured from the hardened coating materials were 1.4×104cell/mL and 67.5mg/㎤, respectively. Moreover, harmful strains were not observed in the sewage water including glycocalix-coated concrete pipes. This implies that Rhodobacter capsulatus used in the coating materials does not influence negatively the microorganism cluster in the sewage environments.
