  • A new formula is proposed for the fundamental period of high-rise residential concrete shear-wall (SW) buildings. This formula, developed on the basis of dynamics with the recorded fundamental period during the recent earthquakes, can consider the wall stiffness with respect to any direction. To verify the proposed formula, the fundamental period of 10 sample buildings, measured during construction, is compared with the predicted fundamental period. Furthermore, the empirical formulas presented in the building codes KBC 2009 and ASCE 7-10, are also compared with the proposed formula to show a rationality of the proposed formula. The comparison results show that the proposed formula not only can rationally consider the characteristics of each shear-wall, but that it also accurately predicts the fundamental period of the buildings.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of the application of double layered bubble sheet on the curing of slab and wall concrete placed at the job site in cold weather and to offer a feasibility of Concrete IoT Management System(CIMS), which is wireless sensor network developed by the authors, to manage early age quality of the concrete in terms of temperature, maturity and strength development. Test results indicated that the application of bubble sheet enhances the insulation performance, which results in an increase of the temperature by around 1~20. 6℃. It is found that CIMS can gather the temperature, maturity and strength development data from the sensors embedded from 30 m far from CIMS successfully. Predicted compressive strengths by CIMS had good agreement with measured ones within 2 MPa error level until 7 days. It is thought that the combination of the bubble sheet application for cold weather protection and CIMS for quality management tool in cold weather concreting contributes to shorten the time for the form removal by one day.

  • Structural walls have been mostly used for the design of reinforced concrete buildings in seismic areas because they play a role as an efficient bracing system and offer great potential for lateral load resistance and drift control. The lateral resistance system for the earthquake load should be designed to have enough ductility and stable hysteretic response in the critical regions where plastic deformation occurred beyond yielding. The behavior of the reinforced concrete element to experience large deformation in the critical areas by a major earthquake is affected by the performance of the confined core concrete. Thus, the confinement of concrete by suitable arrangements of transverse reinforcement results in a significant increase in both the strength and ductility of compressed concrete. This paper reports the experimental results of reinforced concrete structural walls for wall-type apartment structure under axial loads and cyclic reversal of lateral loads with different confinement of the boundary elements. The results show that confinement of the boundary element by open 'U'-bar and cross tie is effective. The shear strength capacity is not increased by the confinement but deformation capacity is improve.

  • This is a comparative structural analysis for a steel roof LNG storage tank that has some advantages relatively in designing larger scale tanks and construction cost, etc. compared with a conventional concrete roof LNG storage tank as the capacity of LNG storage tanks is bigger. Structural analysis was performed on a 200,000$k{\ell}$ steel roof LNG storage tank and a concrete of the same capacity in condition of three critical load combination cases, a normal operation, a LNG spillage and seismic case by using finite element method. And comparative structural safety evaluation was carried out by using strength ratio in places of concrete wall, foundation and roof with a quantitative method.

  • Current buildings have complex shaped walls where the wing wall system is a popular option. When the wing wall is attached to a column, or a short span is produced due to the wing wall system, the system affects the behaviour of the column such as by increasing the strength and decreasing the ductility of the members. Calculations for internal shear force and internal bending moment of the vertical members are considered an important matter in design, but currently Korea does not have studies on the effects of the wing wall on the columns.

  • The objective of this study is to understand the variables affected the confinement for the transverse reinforcement of the reinforced concrete structural walls with the T-shaped cross section subjected to cyclic lateral loads. The structural performance of T-shaped walls was advanced by the transverse reinforcement which restrained the concrete subjected to compressive stress. If the arrangement of transverse reinforcement was not suitable for the confinement, T-shaped walls happened the brittle failure by web crushing or bucking of vertical reinforcement at the compression zone. It is necessary to confine transverse reinforcement in order to prevent the these failure. But the location of neutral axis and the magnitude of ultimate strain vary according to the section shape, a ratio of axial load, a ratio of wall cross sectional area to the floor-plan area, an aspect ratio and the reinforcement ratio. Therefore, the objective of this research is to grasp the location of neutral axis and the range which needs for the confinement of transverse reinforcement through the results of the sectional analysis which varies the ratio of axial load and the ratio of vertical reinforcement.

  • The purpose of this research is to examine experimentally the mechanical properties and economics of No-fines concrete for its application to the low-rise housing construction. Basic mechanical properties of No fines concrete are studied by measuring of compressive, tensile strength and stress-strain relationship, and economics of it is compared with other materials in unit cost and wall construction cost. From the test results, it can be concluded that No-fines concrete has advantages of good workability, light weight and lower construction cost, even though it has lower strength and modulus of elasticity than normal conc:rt:te does.

• The use of new hybrid systems that combine the advantages of steel and reinforced concrete structures has gained popularity. One of these new mixed systems consists of steel beams and reinforced concrete shear wall, which represents a cost- and time-effective type of construction. A number of previous studies have focused on examining the seismic response of steel coupling beams in a hybrid wall system. However, the shear transfer of steel coupling beam-wall connections with panel shear failure has not been thoroughly investigated. The objective of this research was to investigate the seismic performance of steel coupling beamwall connections governed by panel shear failure. To evaluate the contribution of each mechanism, depending upon connection details, an experimental study was carried out The test variables included the reinforcement details that confer a ductile behaviour on the steel coupling beam-wall connection, i.e., the face bearing plates and the horizontal ties in the panel region of steel coupling beam-wall connections. It investigates the seismic behaviour of the steel coupling beams-wall connections in terms of the deformation characteristics. The results and discussion presented in this paper provide background for a companion paper that includes a design model for calculating panel shear strength of the steel coupling beam-wall connections.

  • The existing techniques used to estimate and manage the compressive strength of concrete do not include the environmental factors that influence the development of compressive strength and the compressive strength itself. Thus, it is necessary to develop a reasonable yet simple way to measure the compressive strength of concrete structures at construction sites by considering concrete's mechanical properties and curing environment. This study was conducted to propose an acrylic form and a junction isolation mold with crack-inducing boards that uses non-destructive methods to create and collect concrete test samples that are cured in the same condition as the actual concrete structures. junction isolation molds were used in high-strength and super high-strength concrete to evaluate the reliability of compressive strength evaluation on the test sample. The following were the findings of this study:
