With the current rapid changes in population and technology, the long-lastig housing certification system is a means of prolonging the physical and functional lifespan of a building. The certification requires differentiation between the structure and infill elements to allow for variability and ease of repairs. This works well with prefabricated houses so this study investigated the possibility of applying the long-lastig housing certification requirements to apartment construction using off-site construction (OSC) methods focused on the installation of bathrooms (plumbing and toilet) that differ from the traditional wet method. This study examined three different sized floor plans at 22 m2, 46 m2, and a combined one resulting in 69 m2. The larger 69 m2 plan utilized a removeable non-load bearing wall to increase flexibility in the layout of the floorplan. The apartments are constructed of steel reinforced concrete composite columns on a 9 m × 10.5 m grid with integrated slabs. The exterior and interior infill walls are all non-load bearing with some containing plumbing. This separation of the structure and infill walls can help meet some of the criteria in the long-lastig housing certification, particularly with the ease of repairs. Technologies that facilitate the replacement of infill elements that contain plumbing and other building services can benefit the nation by reducing carbon emissions and therefore tax incentives should be introduced to increase the adoption of the proposed construction methods.

Safety-conscious design on site is required for site constructions because of the introduction of the design for safety, but it still leaves much to be desired. This study compared the site where the design was applied and the site where it was not applied. The applied case examined the underground wall construction during frame construction, which corresponds to the skeleton of the building construction. The underground wall construction is quite risky due to the exposure to exterior environments and involvement of various stages, such as scaffolding, formwork, reinforcing work, and concrete casting work. Therefore, the risk factors for each stage were identified and a risk assessment was carried out to select an alternative method to reduce the risk. The risk factors of the selected alternative construction method were also identified and a risk assessment was conducted. The risk assessment weight was calculated by comparing the site where the construction method was applied and the site where it was not, explaining the necessity of the design for safety in reducing the risk. In addition, an actual case where an alternative construction method was used was studied to highlight the necessity for a design for safety.

The purpose of this research is to develop a slurry-type accelerator that contains various beneficial properties such as reduction of dust generation, lower alkalinity, early age strength development, etc., and uses such slurry type accelerator to produce high performance shotcrete that present excellent resistant against chloride ion penetration. In this work, shotcrete mixtures of 0.44 and 0.338 water-to-binder ratio (w/b) were produced at construction site using slurry-type accelerator. The mechanical properties and chloride ion penetration resistance of such shotcrete (including base concrete) were evaluated. According to the experimental results, the slurry-type accelerator was successfully used to produce both w/b 0.44 and 0.338 shotcretes. The 1 day and 28 day compressive strength of shotcrete were found to be closer to or higher than 10MPa and 40MPa, respectively. The w/b 0.338 shotcrete that used 40% replacement of blast furnace slag showed lower compressive strength than w/b 0.44 shotcrete without any mineral admixture at 1 day. However, the compressive strength with 40% blast furnace slag increased significantly at 28 day. Moreover, there was more than 50% increase in chloride ion penetration resistance with blast furnace slag, showing its strong potential for higher performance shotcrete application.

In this paper, a laser-based non-contact load cell is newly developed for measuring forces in prestressed concrete tendons. First, alumina particles have been sprayed onto an empty load cell which has no strain gauges on it, and the layer has been used as a passive stress sensor. Then, the spectral shifts in fluorescence spectroscopy have been measured using a laser-based spectroscopic system under various force levels, and it has been found that the relation of applied force and spectral shift is linear in a lab-scale test. To validate the field applicability of the customized load cell, a full-scale prestressed concrete specimen has been constructed in a yard. During the field test, it was, however, found that the coating surface has irregular stress distribution. Therefore, the location of a probe has to be fixed onto the customized load cell for using the coating layer as a passive stress sensor. So, a prototype customized load cell has been manufactured, which consists of a probe mount on its casing. Then, by performing lab-scale uniaxial compression tests with the prototype load cell, a linear relation between compression stress and spectrum shift at a specific point where laser light had been illuminated has been detected. Thus, it has a high possibility to use the prototype load cell as a force sensor of prestressed concrete tendons.

Related to the previous paper on the typical crack pattern of tunnel lining with NATM, the characteristic defects in reinforced cement concrete lining of NATM tunnel have analyzed with the precise inspection with safety and diagnosis (PISD) by KISTEC. Depending on the reinforcing materials, steel rebar, steel fiber, and glass fiber have been implemented to reinforcing lining in various NATM tunnel constructions. Reinforcing lining with rebar are prevailed on NATM tunnel to countermeasure the weak geological circumstances, to pursuit the economical tunnel sections, and to resist the risk of tunnel deterioration. By the special act on the safety control of public facilities, the reinforced NATM tunnels for more than 1 km length are scrutinized closely to characterize defects; crack, reinforcement exposure, and lack of lining. Crack resistance by reinforcing is shown in comparison with the normalized crack to the length of tunnel. Typical exposed reinforcements in lining have exemplified with various sections. The lack of lining due to the mal-construction, spalling, fire, earthquake and leaching has been analyzed. The cause and mechanism with the field inspections and other studies has also been verified. Detailed cases are selected by the above concerns as well as the basic information from FMS (Facilities Management System). Likewise the previous paper, this study provides specialized defects in reinforced lining of NATM and it can be widely used in spreading the essential technics and reporting skills. Furthermore, it would be advised and amended for the detail guideline of Safety Diagnosis and PISD (tunnel).

This work has been initiated to find possibility whether recycled fine aggregate can be used as a source of aggregate for structural concrete or not. Two-stage mixing approach was chosen in order to maximize strength potential from recycled fine aggregate. Moisture content of the recycled fine aggregate was changed, and two different types of two-stage mixing approaches were applied to produce cement mortar. The strength of mortar made of 100% recycled fine aggregate by two-stage mixing approaches was compared to that of mortar made of 100% washed sea sand. According to the results, the effect of moisture content on compressive strength was observed from low water cement mortar(W/C 0.3). In case of W/C 0.5 cement mortar, no clear relationship was observed between moisture content and strength development. It was found that two-stage mixing approach has a potential to increase the strength of mortar made of 100% recycled fine aggregate. In case of modified version of two-stage mixing approach which first prepares cement paste and pours recycled fine aggregate into the cement paste, was more effective to increase the strength of mortar made of 100% recycled fine aggregate.

In various industrial fields and infrastructure based on electronic components, such as communication equipment, transportation, computer networks, and military equipment, the need for electromagnetic pulse shielding has increased. Two methods for applying electromagnetic pulse shielding are effective. The first is construction using shielding materials, such as shielding concrete, shielding doors, and shielding windows. The other is coating shielding paints on non-shielding structures. Electromagnetic pulse shielding paints are made using conductive materials, such as carbon nanotubes, graphite, carbon black, and carbon fiber. In this paint, electromagnetic pulse shielding performance is added to the commonly used water-based paint. In this study, the shielding effectiveness and bonding performance of paints using conductive graphite and carbon black as shielding materials were evaluated to develop electromagnetic pulse shielding inorganic paints. The shielding effectiveness and bonding performance were evaluated by applying six mixtures composed of different kinds and amounts of shielding material. The mixture of conductive graphite and carbon black at a weight ratio of 1:0.2 was the most effective in shielding as 33.6 dB. Furthermore, the mixture produced using conductive graphite only showed the highest bonding performance of 1.06 MPa.

The aim of the research is providing a fundamental data on quality and constructability of direct tile setting method depending on various cement to sand ratio for tiling dry cement mortar. A large number of tile setting failures reported is related with the cement mortar and its construction for tiling. Because of different materials of tiles, the properties of tiling dry cement mortar, an adhesive for tiling, can influence on quality and constructability of tiling differently. Practically, the easiest way of controlling the properties of the tiling dry cement mortar is to control the proportion of cement and sand. Hence, in this research, sand to cement ratio (S/C) was controlled. Since there is no standarized method on evaluating performance of dry cement mortar for tiling, a several sensory evaluation methods were suggested and executed. According to the experiments conducted in this research, the adhesive performance of cement mortar for tiles can be different depending on the sides such as tile and substrate. Additionally, depending on S/C, finishability, initial adhesive performance, and tile shifting resistance can be changed for ceramic tile. Therefore, under the conditions of this research, about 5 of S/C can be recommended for appropriate performace of tiling dry cement mortar.

The study performed long-term performacne evaluation on the hot mix asphalt using the steel slag aggregates and Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP). The laboratory comparative evaluation was conducted between conventional Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) which is entitled WC-2 and HMA containing steel slag and RAP which is entitled ES WC-2(R). Dynamic stability test, dynamic modulus test, and fatigue crack test were conducted during the comparative evaluation process. The dynamic stability test result showed that ES WC-2(R) was 140% higher than WC-2. It is noted that ES WC-2(R) showed no inflection point whereas WC-2 showed inflection point during the dynamic stability test which implies ES WC-2(R) has the higher moisture susceptability than WC-2. The dynamic modulus of ES WC-2(R) were 342.3%, 486.7%, and 350.0% higher than WC-2 at medium temperature of 21℃, low temperature of -10℃, and high temperature of 38℃ respectively. The test result showed that rutting resistance of ES WC-2(R) is higher than WC-2 at all temperature spectrum. The fatigue resistance of ES WC-2(R) were 31.7%, 325.3%, 899.9% higher at low stress level, medium stress level, and high stress level, respectively. The test result showed that ES WC-2(R) is higher than WC-2 at all stress levels. Based on the laboratory comparative evaluation, The in-situ scale Accelerated Pavement Test (APT) was conducted comparing WC-2 and WC-2(R). APT found that the rutting resistance of WC-2(R) was 45% higher than WC-2.

This study was conducted to confirm the applicability of recycled aggregates as aggregates for structural concrete as a way to respond to the shortage of natural aggregates. The two-stage mixing approach developed by Tam et al. is known to be a method that can improve the mechanical performance of recycled aggregate concrete without the installation of new additional facilities. In this work, modified version of two stage mixing approach, which was used in our earlier work, was introduced to prepare mortar specimens with recycled fine aggregate, and the compressive strength and fire resistance were compared to mortar mixed with normal mixing approach. According to the experimental results from mortar with recycled fine aggregate, the use of two-stage mixing approach was found to be more effective than normal mixing approach for compressive strength development. In addition, the residual strengths of the mortar with two-stage mixing approach was higher than mortar made of normal mixing approach after exposure to 600 and 900 ℃. It is possible to manufacture high-performance cement composites with recycled fine aggregates through the active use of the two-stage mixing approach.
