  • The purpose of the study was to improve quality of high volume fly ash concrete. The study evaluated on the possibility of early quality improvement of high volume fly ash concrete with early strength gain admixture ('GA' below) developed by the preceding research. The study regarded applying naphthalene admixture ('NA' below) to mix proportion substituting FA 15 % to be plain. In the event of substituting FA 20, 25 and 30 %, the study compared engineering properties of concrete with plain by applying GA. Because of features of fresh concrete, fluidity falls down when GA is applied. Therefore, its use amount shall be increased. Only, in W/B 60 %, it was beneficial since slump loss was reduced about 35~70 mm than plain. The study could see that AE use should be increased proportionally since air content was reduced by coming from AE absorption operation of unburned coal content included in FA according to an increase in the amount of FA use. Reduction effect of bleeding could be anticipated since the amount of bleeding appeared at least in FA 20 %. Because of hardened concrete, time of setting appeared in the same level as plain when GA was applied. Therefore, it is judged that delay of setting can be reduced. In compressive strength, the study could check the same strength development as plain when GA was applied, having nothing to do with W/B and curing temperature. However, it is thought that we shall pay attention to GA use in the event of FA 30 % substitution. Freezing and melting resistance had less early value than plain. However, it is judged that there will be no problem of frost resistance since there is no a large difference between freezing and melting resistance and plain in overall. In accelerated neutralization, it was analyzed that a problem of weakening in neutralization appointed as a demerit when FA was applied in mass in proportion with GA use could be settled to some extent.

  • In this paper, we present the analytical study results pertaining to the buckling of the orthotropic plates and local buckling of structural compression members composed of orthotropic plate components. Fiber reinforced polymeric plastic (FRP) materials, have many advantages over conventional structural materials such as steel and concrete. The advantages of the FRP materials are high specific strength and stiffness, high corrosion resistance, right weight, etc. Among the various manufacturing methods, pultrusion process is one of the best choices for the mass production of structural plastic members. Since the major reinforcing fibers are placed along the axial direction of the member, this material is usually considered as an orthotropic (tranversely isotropic, more specifically) material. However, pultruded fiber reinforced plastic structural members have low modulus of elasticity and are composed of orthotropic thin plate components the members are prone to buckle. Therefore, stability is an important issue in the design of the pultruded FRP structural members. In this paper, the buckling of orthotropic plates and the local buckling of pultruded FRP structural members are investigated by following the previous research results and the local buckling strength of the member produced in the domestic manufacturer is found.

  • Recently, many efforts have been made to construct the first unlined tunnel, without in-situ concrete lining, in Korea. However, the lack of reliability in the performance of shotcrete as permanent tunnel support prevented from its realization. Shotcrete has been regarded to have significant problems in field application and long term performance because of unsatisfactory strength level and durability compared to those of European countries. In this study, the high strength shotcrete satisfying compressive strength over 40 MPa and flexural strength over 4.5 MPa was developed from optimized mix design. The type of accelerators and the amount of silica fume were selected as the main factors in mixing process and the analyses were carried out up to the elapsed time of 2 years. In order to evaluate the short term durability of shotcrete, an array of laboratory test consisting of freeze-thaw, carbonation chloride penetration and permeability test was performed. For long-term durability tests, specimens have been put in an operated highway tunnel to expose them to the similar environment when they are actually used as an unlined tunnel support. From the strength and durability tests, it was found that only alkali-free based accelerator satisfied the target strength of this study and also, the developed shotcrete showed very high performance in its durability.

  • A pressure vessel is a cylindrical container that accommodates a pressurized fluid. In real life, there are propane canisters and butane canisters. According to data from the Korea Gas Safety Corporation, The number of domestic gas accidents is average 33 cases of domestic gas accidents occurred per year and 20.8 for mobile butane gases. The purpose of this study was to investigate a method to prevent this kind of explosion. Common studies include forced drain through safe holes, forced separation of butane canisters, and manufacturing of high-strength steel. This paper uses a concept that reduces stress inside the cylinder using prestressed method that precede compression. In other words, install a long liner in both ends of the pressure vessel. I want to develop a safety device that acts like a gas intermediate valve.

  • Tensile constitutive stress-strain model of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) in fib MC2010 was investigated. In order to model tensile behavior of SFRC, three point loading flexural tests were conducted on notched small beams according to BE-EN-14651. Design parameters for the constitutive model were determined from the flexural tests. Flexural test and finite element analysis were conducted on large SFRC beam without steel reinforcements and compared with each other. In addition, parametric study on the effect of compressive and tensile model, and characteristic length on flexural behavior of the SFRC beam was conducted also. In results, pre-peak load-displacement curves from the FE analysis was close to experimental curves but significant difference was shown in post-peak behavior. The reason of the difference is originated from the fact that the fiber distribution and orientation were not being properly considered in the MC2010 model. This study shows that modification and detail explanations on the orientation factor K in MC2010 might require to better reproduce the behaviour of large scale SFRC beams.

  • This study discussed the pozzolanic properties of calcined sewage sludge (CSS) according to calcination and fineness conditions. The chemical and mineralogical analysis of CSS according to calcination temperature and time were carried out and compared with that of the existing pozzolanic materials such as fly-ash, blast furnance slag and meta-kaolin. Various mortars were made by mixing those CSS and $Ca(OH)_2$ (1:1 wt. %), and their compressive strength and hydrates according to experimental factors such as fineness of CSS and curing age were also investigated in detail. The results show clearly the potentiality of calcined sewage sludge (CSS) as an admixture materials in concrete, but the CSS should be controlled by calcination temperature and time, and fineness etc. In this experimental condition, the calcination temperature of $800^{\circ}C$, calcination time of 2 hours and fineness of $5,000cm^2/g$ were optimum conditions in consideration of the mechanical properties and economic efficiency of CSS. The compressive strength of CSS mortars was higher than that of fly-ash mortars and blast furnace slag mortars, especially at the early ages. Then, the utilization of CSS in construction fields was greatly expected.

  • In this paper, it has been studied about the CRCO to maintain or rehabilitate the aged JCP. The CRCO and JCO was constructed at useless section of Seo-Hae-Ahn express highway in South Korea. The performance evaluation was conducted. Especially, it was focused on the roll of longitudinal reinforced steels inserted into the CRCO. On crack survey results from field construction section, the reflection cracks at joint of the existing pavement occurred in CRCO. However, due to the constraints of longitudinal reinforced steels, crack width was small. Total crack length and quantity in the CRCO more than that in the JCO. And crack spacing in the CRCO was narrower than it in the CRCP. Through the bonding strength test results, if the cold milling and cleaning as well as surface treatment is applied, there will be no debonding problem at interlayer in the early age. From analysis of the horizontal behavior at the joint, the longitudinal reinforced steels constrained crack width which became wider than initial state over time. Also, that steel in the CRCO reduced the horizontal movement due to temperature variation(4 times than that in the JCO). But, if interface is debonded, the roll decreased. Vertical VWG data showed that CRCO did not occur debonding problem at steel location, but there was some problem in JCO. It was confirmed by field coring. The tensile strain appeared in the CRCO, But the compressive strain occurred in the JCO in early age. Through the FWD test result, deflection in the CRCO was less than that in the JCO. And K value in the CRCO was greater than it in the JCO.

  • In this study, the relationship between the material properties and air permeability characteristics was examined, an experimental method to analyze the air permeability characteristics was presented, and experimental results were derived. The effects of compressive strength and apparent density of hardened concrete on air permeability characteristics were evaluated experimentally. Focusing on the mix proportions used in nuclear power plant concrete structures, concrete test specimens were manufactured and air permeability characteristics were measured according to changes in binder, maximum aggregate size, and water-binder ratio. The apparent density was over 2,400 kg/m3 for the OPC mix and the FA-35 mix, and the air permeability for both mixes were low, in the range of 0.1-0.2 L/min. On the other hand, in the case of the combination of FA-40, FA-45, and FA-M, the apparent density was measured to be less than 2,400 kg/m3 and the air permeability was measured to be more than 0.3 L/min, experimentally verifying that the apparent density is an important factor in air permeability characteristics.

  • Concrete emits a large amount of carbon dioxide throughout its life cycle, and due to the societal demand for carbon dioxide reduction, research on storing carbon dioxide in concrete in the form of minerals is ongoing. In this study, cyanobacteria, which absorb carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and fix it as calcium carbonate, were applied to a porous concrete substrate, and the changes in the properties of the concrete substrate due to their special environmental curing condition were analyzed. The results showed that the calcium carbonate precipitation by the microorganisms was concentrated in the light-exposed surface area, and most of the precipitation occurred in the cement paste part, not in the aggregate. This microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation enhanced the mechanical performance of the paste and improved the overall compressive strength as the curing age progressed. In addition, the increase in microbial biofilm and calcium carbonate improved the pore structure, which influenced the reduction in water permeability.

  • This study investigated the fire resistance of RC columns applying Fiber addition method, Fire board attaching method, and Fire proof sparying method. The results were summarized as following. The test showed that increase of fiber content, as expected, decreased the fluidity of fresh concrete, but for the types of fiber, the specimens containing nylon(NY) was favorable. The incline of fiber content also affected on the air content of concrete, which the specimens adding polypropylene(PP) fiber was the lowest, followed by a less decrease in polyvinyl alchhol(PVA) and then NY respectively. For the compressive strength at 28days, it was over 50MPa and showed slight increasing tendency by rising fiber contents. After the fire test completed, control concrete exhibited the severe demage, while the specimens containing more than 0.05vol.% of PP and NY was able to protect from spalling. In the case of splay, the partly spalling occurred at the all finishing material, however the RC columns were protected from spalling. For the methods attached with boards, all RC columns were protected except the dry attaching method. The reduced weight ratio was favorable because it was below 8 % except for plain concrete.
