  • In this study, cable tension was measured using the vibration method, and a vision-based system was applied as a sensor to measure the displacement response of a cable in a non-contact method. In the vision-based system, the camera is installed in a location that considers the target structure and the field of view of the camera. However, it can be difficult to recognize the control points required to measure the displacement response of a structure as the target structure and other structures such as vehicles may be included in the image at the intended installation location. In this study, a distorted image including a vehicle shows inaccurate results in image analysis due to the installation position of the vision-based system. Accordingly, the image including the vehicle was eliminated by calculating the similarity between the two images. To verify the validity of the method of estimating the cable tension of cable-stayed bridges using the proposed method, the vibration method was applied to cable-stayed bridges in service to measure the tension.

  • Due to the self-equilibrium status of the cable system, the loss of the tensioning in the cable system results in other cables carrying larger tension forces than those initially calculated by structural engineers. Also, turn-buckle systems, which have been widely used to pre-tension and/or re-tension the cables, are limited to use for small cables and to provide a rough estimation for tension forces. In this study, the re-tensioning cable connection systems were developed to overcome the problems mentioned above. The main objective of the proposed system is to re-tension large cables and measure the exact amount of tension forces of the cable systems. This connection system is also combined with the wireless signal monitoring module so that engineers are able to measure the tension forces any place where the internet is available. This paper presents the development of the re-tensioning cable connection systems and experiment using the real-scale cable systems to verify the fe-tensioning and signal monitoring systems.

  • In a long-span bridge, the cables are important elements that support the load of the bridge. Accordingly, the cable tension is a very important variable in evaluating the health and safety of the bridge. The most popular methods of estimating the cable tensions are the direct method, which directly measures the cable stresses using load cells, hydraulic jacking devices, etc., and the vibration method, which inverses the tensions using the cable shapes and the measured dynamic characteristics. Studies on the use of the electromagnetic (EM) sensor, which detects the magnetic field variations caused by the change in the stress of the steel in the cable, are increasing. In this study, the lift-off test, the EM sensor, and the vibration method (Vision-based System and Accelerometer) were used to measure cable tension, and their results were compared and analyzed.

  • This paper deals with the method of self-equilibrium stress mode analysis of cable dome structures. From the point of view of analysis, cable dome structure is a kind of unstable truss structure which is stabilized by means of introduction of prestressing. The prestress must be introduced according to a specific proportion among different structural member and it is determined by an analysis called self-equilibrium stress mode analysis. The mathematical equation involved in the self-equilibrium stress mode analysis is a system of linear equations which can be solved numerically by adopting the concept of Moore-Penrose generalized inverse. The calculation of the generalized inverse is carried out by rank factorization method. This method involves a parameter called epsilon which plays a critical role in self-equilibrium stress mode analysis. It is thus of interest to investigate the range of epsilon which produces consistent solution during the analysis of self-equilibrium stress mode.

  • Safety inspection of cable-supported bridge has increasingly attention as many cable-supported bridges are currently constructed/operated. Whilst cables as a main component in cable-supported bridge should be inspected regularly, traditional method (visual inspection) has limitation to check the condition of cables properly due to restricted factors. It is evidently necessary to develop cable-inspection robot to overcome this concern. In this respect, the main aim in this study is to manufacture the improved robot compared with the existing robot. The improved functions of the robot in this study were that the robot can be operated in large cable diameter (greater than 200 mm) and climbing ability of the robot increases. In addition, electro-magnetic sensor as a non-destructive method in the robot was added to detect damaged cables and performance of the sensor was evaluated in indoor and field experiments. Consequently, the robot was able to move on the cable with ~0.2m/s and to detect damaged cables using the sensor. It was also confirmed that performance of the robot in field test is similar to that in indoor test.

  • Due to advancements in construction technology and analytical tools, an increasing number of cable-stayed bridges have been designed and constructed in recent years. A cable is a structural element that primarily transmits the main load of a cable-stayed bridge and plays the most crucial role in reflecting the overall condition of the entire bridge system. In this study, a vision-based method was applied to estimate the tension of the stay cables located at a long distance. To measure the response of a cable using a vision-based method, it is necessary to install feature points or targets on the cable. However, depending on the location of the point to be measured, there may be no feature points in the cable, and there may also be limitations in installing the target on the cable. Hence, it is necessary to find a way to measure cable response that overcomes the limitations of existing vision-based methods. This study proposes a method for measuring cable responses by utilizing the characteristics of cable shape. The proposed method involved extracting the cable shape from the acquired image and determining the center of the extracted cable shape to measure the cable response. The extracted natural frequencies of the vibration mode were obtained using the measured responses, and the tension was estimated by applying them to the vibration method. To verify the reliability of the vision-based method, cable images were obtained from the Hwatae Bridge in service under ambient vibration conditions. The reliability of the method proposed in this study was confirmed by applying it to the vibration method using a vision-based approach, resulting in estimated tensions with an error of less than 1% compared to tensions estimated using an accelerometer.

  • In this study, Multi-Channel Magnetic Flux Leakage(MFL) sensor - based inspection system was applied to monitor the condition of cables. This inspection system measures magnetic flux to detect the local faults(LF) of steel cable. To verify the feasibility of the proposed damage detection technique, an 8-channel MFL sensor head prototype was designed and fabricated. A steel cable bunch specimen with several types of damage was fabricated and scanned by the MFL sensor head to measure the magnetic flux density of the specimen. To interpret the condition of the steel cable, magnetic flux signals were used to determine the locations of the flaws and the level of damage. Measured signals from the damaged specimen were compared with thresholds set for objective decision making. In addition, the magnetic flux density values measured from every channel were summed to focus on the detection of axial location. And, sum of flux density were displayed with threshold. Finally, the results were compared with information on actual inflicted damages to confirm the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed cable monitoring method.
