In this study, the failure modes by ballistic impacts were studied both for a neat Kevlar woven fabric and a Kevlar liquid armor impregnated with shear thickening fluid (STF) containing silica particles. These two materials showed quite different failure modes macroscopically in ballistic impacts tests used by Cal.22 FSP and 9mm FMJ bullet. Yarn pull-out for the neat Kevlar woven fabric and yarn fracture occurred partially through all plies from 1st ply to last one for the STF-Kevlar are an important energy absorption mechanisms. The results observed by S.E.M showed commonly fiber damage which are torn skin in the longitudinal fiber direction, fiber split axially and fiber fracture for two materials. The reasons why STF-kevlar liquid armor material exhibits excellent ballistic performance are as follow: firstly the increased friction forces between yarn-yarn and fabric-fabric covered with silica particles and secondary the evolution of shear thickening phenomenmon resulting in suppression of yarn mobility.

This paper describes the need for a ductile Fiber Reinforced Plastic(FRP) reinforcement for Concrete Structures. Using the material hybrid and geometric hybrid, it is demonstrated that the pseudo-ductility Characteristic can be generated in FRP rebar. Ductile hybrid FRP bars were successfully fabricated at Ø3mm and Ø10mm nominal diameters using the braidtrusion process. Tensile and bending specimens from these bars were tested and compared with behavior of stress-strain of steel bar and GFRP rebar

An optimal brake pad must have stable friction, low wear and least amount of squeal. In this study, the friction, wear and squeal behavior of some non-asbestos Kevlar materials have been evaluated experimentally. Four specimens with different formulations and a pin-on-disk machine were used for this study. To determine the role of each component in friction and squeal of a brake pad, statistical correlations have been obtained and discussed. The components tested were : Kevlar, Steel Powder, Barium Sulfate and fillers combined by Resin.
In this study, shear thickening fluid (STF) filled with rigid nano silica particles was impregnated in plain woven Kevlar fabrics to improve the impact resistance performance. The nano silica particles with an average diameter of 100nm, 300nm, and 500nm were used to make shear thickening fluid to estimate the effect of particle size on the impact behavior of STF impregnated Kevlar fabrics. The yam pull-out and frictional tests were conducted to estimate the effect of impregnated STF on the frictional characteristics. The test results showed that the friction forces were dramatically increased at the STF onset shear strain rates that were measured in preliminary rheology tests. The low speed impact tests were performed using the drop test machine. The results showed that the impregnated STF improved the impact resistance performance of the Kevlar fabrics in terms of the impact energy absorption and the deformation. It has been shown through tests that the impregnated STF affects the interfacial friction which contributes to improve the energy absorption in the Kevlar fabrics. Especially, the impregnation of the STF with the smaller particle size into the Kevlar fabrics showed the better performance in impact energy absorption.
When designing ships and aircraft structures, it is important to design them to satisfy weight reduction and strength. Currently, studies related to topology optimization using 3D printed composite materials are being actively conducted to satisfy the weight reduction and strength of the structure. In this study, structural analysis was performed to analyze the applicability of 3D printed composite materials to the flight control surface, one of the parts of an aircraft or unmanned aerial vehicle. The optimal topology shape of the flight control surface for the bending load was analyzed by considering three types (hexagonal, rectangular, triangular) of the topology shape of the flight control surface. In addition, the bending strength of the flight control surface was analyzed when four types of reinforcing materials (carbon fiber, glass fiber, high-strength high-temperature glass fiber, and kevlar) of the 3D printed composite material were applied. As a result of comparing the three-point bending test results with the finite element method results, it was confirmed that the flight control surface with hexagonal topology shape made of carbon fiber and Kevlar had excellent performance. And it is judged that the 3D printed composite can be sufficiently applied to the flight control surface.
This article deals with the manufacture and test results of asbestos-free friction material for Aluminium at toy disk. In order to obtain optimum formulation, various formulations of fibres, matrix, modifiers, fillers, etc were designed and evaluated. The constant friction and brake dynamometer tests were performed to know weak and strong point for each friction material. The C21 formulation of various tested formulations exhibited superior friction constant(0.38∼38), fade rate (18%) by JASO C406 test mode and maximum wear 1.6 mm. disc wear 0.08 mm by JASO C427 test mode. The surface morphology of AL alloy disk(before and after test) was observed by Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) and Image Analyzer.
Using conventional textile techniques such as weaving braiding knitting and stitching it is possible to produce a wide range two and three dimensional fiber preforms, however so far only a limited attention has been given to knitted fabrics in composite industry. This is mainly due to the opinion that knitted fabric reinforced composites posses low mechanical properties owing to their looped fiber architecture. But it is possible to obtain desired mechanical properties by selecting proper knitted fabric structure, In this paper mechanical characteristics of kevlar plain weft knitted fabrics reinforced plastics(KFRP) are evaluated for th development of intrusion beam of car side door. Tensile bending impact properties of KFRP are measured experimentally and crush demands of Americal Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No.214(FMVSS 214) compared with the bending load and displacement of KFRP by quasi-static test method. The applicability and limitation of bending load and displacement of KFRP according to specimen size has been discussed.

This paper investigated the method to predict a thermal response of internal insulation in a solid rocket motor considering both thermal decomposition and ablation. Changes in properties due to the thermal decomposition, swelling of char layer and movement of decomposition gases inside the material were considered during a modeling. And radiative/convective heat flux from the exhaust gas were applied as boundary conditions, while the chemical ablation of the material surface is modeled with algebraic equations. Test SRM with thermocouples was solved for a validation purpose. The results showed that predicted temperatures have identical trends and values compared to the experimental values. And an error of predicted thermal destruction depth was around 0.1 mm.

In this paper, optimal designs of bicycle frame were studied for weight reduction of bicycle using carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), glass-fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP) and Kevlar-fiber-reinforced plastic (KFRP), respectively. Based on the anisotropic properties of FRP material, stacking angle and thickness optimization were performed under the safety reference of European committee for standardization (CEN) to ensure the stability of bicycle frame. Finally, performances of FRP bicycle frame was evaluated by digital logic method based on the optimized results of weight, strength properties and cost. Then, the optimized bicycle frame composed of each FRPs were evaluated and ranked by total performance values.

We present a kevlar rope based Non-Explosive Actuator(NEA) device which has simple structure and is activated by burning Ni-Cr wire. Through performance test, we find it can be operated under various pre-load by simply changing turn number of Ni-Cr wire. It shows release time of 680ms and shock level of 110G under pre-load of 6.0kN. Launching environment and space environment tests are planned to verify performance of the NEA based on European Satellite Agency test manual. Conclusively, we expect the proposed NEA can be applicable to release solar panel and fairing separation.
